Wish them luck!
My PCs enter the CRM on Saturday. I've been prepping this thing for months...I've got cards for every NPC, a horde of miniatures and my homemade dungeon tiles all ready to go. I am PUMPED.
The groups scouted the area, decided on the less-traveled path and got some good scouting from the sorcerer's commando toad, so they know about the "giant porcupine."
They're being smart, gonna buff up and then enter, try to bluff but expect a fight. They are a bit overpowered for the main gate, but I want it that way.
Here's my group:
Cull, Clr5; buff and melee-oriented
Genace, Mnk4/Clr1; flanking partner and utility healer
Saetryth, Rog4/Rgr1/Brb1; flanking machine
Xeris Ftr4/Clr1; Shield expert TWF tank
Iflore Sor5 (NPC); blaster, but no web
Redithoor Brd4 (NPC)
Lets hope they're all still there in a week!

Uhm, my guys are about that level and they are about to have their asses handed to them by Lareth himself..... The main gate is a killer for these guys, but
GOOD LUCK

My four guys were all 5/6 level, and they handled it okay. Good luck to them, and to you. Make sure you have all those cards handy and organized. I ran into trouble at the main gate when I got a bit disorganized my cheat sheets and replaced a wave of humans with a wave of Gnolls. Not a big deal, but made accounting difficult.

Re: Wish them luck!
Mine (4 players) arrived at the main gate as 8th level PCs (having butchered Lareth). The Main Gate was more of a massacre than a fight - but your guys should have a challenging fight ahead of them.

Re: Wish them luck!
Excellent! With a good plan and scouting they should do ok, they look powerful enough to handle trouble if they're expecting it.
I've been noticing that the groups that seem to have trouble with the South Gate are the one who go in without some kind of plan. Good planning at this stage will give them experience which will benefit them throughout the CRM.
Let us know how it goes!

Re: Wish them luck!
It was a blast. I'll post a writeup one of these days; the short of it is that they planned *very* well, executed reasonably well, and still had six drops into negative hps, at least one death (I've gotta preserve some suspense ), used tons of expendable items including one of their two remaining precious beads of force, but conquered the main gate.
The howler was friggin' nasty. Just plain nasty. The whole fight took about six hours to play out, with all the waves of bad guys coming in. At one point, after lots of pummeling and a couple series' of reinforcements, my most enthusiastic player passed me a note saying "if somebody summons an earth or water elemental out of the ground next to me, I'm going to quit playing." It was a jest of course, but that's how far I pushed them.
Best of all, I didn't pull punches, I played it straight, and they managed.

Re: Wish them luck!
Sounds great! I look forward to reading your log.
"They were immediately and absolutely recognizable as adventurers. They were hardy and dangerous, lawless, stripped of allegiance or morality, living off their wits, stealing and killing, hiring themselves out to whoever and whatever came... They were scum who died violent deaths, hanging on to a certain cachet among the impressionable through their undeniable bravery and their occasionally impressive exploits" China Mieville, Perdido Street Station |

Re: Wish them luck!
Did you use the properly advanced howler that is available here in the errata thread (or maybe BoB, don't remember)?
Was it free of its chain when they fought it?
Curious how they handled something that mean.
