Question about RttToEE from newbie DM
Hi. I haven't played RttToEE or the original Temple of Elemental Evil, nor have my players, and basically what I'd like to know is whether we can just started RttToEE without missing anything. Is it a sequel to the original game, or more of an update for 3E? Because if it's a sequel then I'd probably want to convert the original to 3E and play that first, but if that's what RttToEE is anyway then we can just play that.

Question about RttToEE from newbie DM
RttToEE is more of what happens after the original Temple of Elemental Evil. However, there is no need to have played the original for RttToEE to be enjoyable. Most of what happens in RttToEE is not affected by the original Temple of Elemental Evil. Enjoy the adventure.

Re: Question about RttToEE from newbie DM
RttToEE happens 15 years after the previous adventure

no links, except one of the locations (ToEE)

no problem that none of you know anything about the previous module

do your players know the world you're placing RttToEE in? Forgotten Realms or Greyhawk? that would help a little since some things might signify something then (like in my campaign, my cleric of Pelor knows that his god, Pelor, is an ancient enemy of Tharizdun, so that adds a little flavour and motivation)

Enjoy the ride, it's gonna be a long one!

And feel free to ask any questions you might have

Re: Question about RttToEE from newbie DM
The nice thing about RttToEE is that there are NPC's in Hommlet who know of and participated the the Battle of Elmindy Medows (the first fall of the Temple) and who gave support to the adventurers who would have run through the actual ToEE module.

As such, a lot of background info and history is available to the PC's who cultivate alliances and talk to the NPC's in Hommlet, eliminating the "need" for them to have gone through the original module.

If you start PC's specifically to run through RttToEE, you can also tie the PC's background inot the original ToEE module (parents/relatives/etc) to give them a more "personal" stake into it.

Ones I have used:

I had a dwark female whose background said orphan (and who had no last name). I linked her to a descendant of the Hammersongs (lost heir to the CRM, more direct descendant than Rerrid in Rastor).

Rerrid Hammersong (Rastor NPC cleric of Moradin) briefly became a PC controlled character. Hi slink to the CRM is obvious.

I have the party wizard as a distant relative of Jolene (Thrommel's betrothed). He's something like a sixth cousin and the player came in late to the game, the party was already assaulting the CRM. Jolene asked him to continue searching for her lost Prince (since it's 20+ years already, and she's running out of high level people to ask to continue the search). He was brought in as a captured sacrific being brought into the CRM when the party rescued him. This gave a link the the party for when they met Trhommel to know his background and give a quandry of what to do (save him or destroy him). It's working out well.

There are plenty of was to link your PC's to the module if you give it a little thought.

Good luck with it! It's a big undertaking running RttToEE, but this board will be your best resource. Don't be afraid to ask for help here, there's plenty of volunteers who can give you advice and options.
