What will happen if?
What happens if the person carrying all of the items from the moat-house and cult members in Hommlet dies and Mereclar captures his body at the main gate?

I ask, because this happened a few weeks ago in my game and just haven’t had time to ask.

As I have it right now Mereclar collected all the stuff, Terrigit (trog cleric) determined what was magical, and they took it to the mages at the fire bridge to get identified for a steep fee. Mereclar took a few items back for him and the guards the mages took their share and the rest (including the relics) were to be sent out to the Fanes for the Doomdreamers to look at.

Hows this sound? Anyone got other ideas?

Thanks

Once a single Relic shows up in the OF, someone (likely Naquient) is going to trace them back through to their source (through the mages, back to Mereclar and Terrigit) and inspect every last thing for any even faint sign of significance or importance.

There's a decent chance that she'll confiscate EVERYTHING "just in case" it might have significance and importance.

Ordinarially, I'd suggest distributing it as you wrote, but when you add the Relics into the mix, there's a decent chance that most, if not all, of the stuff is layed out neatly on an "examination table" somewhere in the Outer Fane. Perhaps even convert Dunrat's old quarters (the presents of the items suggests that he won't be back to use them).

Another thought...there's also a decent chance that Naquient is going to be highly concerned that others might have other artifacts (after all, I doubt Dunrat was sent with an inventory list of what to come back with). After questioning Mereclar extensively to find out about the attack, who all was with them, and if they retreated (and to where), she might begin doing some other scrying or investegating.

Perhaps she gets ahold of Tal Chammish (assuming his cover isn't blown yet) and has him either offer to buy any "strange items" the party has, or better still...get them hooked on Tanabrosh and then offer to trade any other items for more of the drug.

Or perhaps she even travels there in person to have a "nice talk" with the PCs. I'd recommend having Hedrack prepare her a Refuge stick just in case, if you take this route.

Thanks for the ideas
Well,

Their was only one person with all the relics on them plus 3 other party members that were killed.

One was allowed to leave to spread the word not to mess with the mines, but she knew nothing about the relics as she had just joined the group.

If I use what you suggestd, how long do you think it would take for Naquient to show up to ask Mereclar and the others at the main gate ?'s ?

I ask because the new party (made up of old party members that had left, plus new ones) showed up about 5 or 6 days later and just wiped out the main gate except for the trog who is retreating toward the trog caves. (this is where we left off last night)

Thanks for the insight, just trying to do all I can to make this interesting for my players.

Re: What will happen if?
Put yourself in the shoes of Nanquent. The Fire Bridge Complex just sent you a bundle of magical items taken from strangers who were killed at the western entrance of the CRM. Some of those items are obvious artifacts of Tharizdun.

This should raise some questions including: Who are these strangers? Where did they come from? Why do they have the artifacts? The CRM is a dangerous place and "friendly fire" occasionaly occurs because the tension between the temples, bridges and entrances is insanely high. As the cultists are evil and insane there's a good chance that not all of the items taken at the western entrance made it to the Outer Fane. The longer she takes to trace the items down the more likely it is that they'll remain hidden in the CRM.

I'd say an investigation would be immediate, the next day or the day after ... but certainly before the next PC attack. The presence of a doomdreamer in the CRM will bring out the truth from the bridge and entrance areas. The remains of the strangers would be examined for clues of allegence and origin. The casting of Speak with Dead, while not guarenteed to bring answers, could provide at least cryptic clues to the strangers origin and purpose. Did any of the items from the fallen strangers have clues to their origin and purpose(journals, diaries and other personal affects)?

One of the strangers escaped? They could harbor stolen artifacts. Did any of the western entrance get a good look at the escaped stranger? Scrying only needs "second hand" knowledge to have a chance ... but what that means is a little vague. What second hand physical description is good enough? A painting should do good. But a verbal description? How about a mental image magically pulled from the mind of someone who has seen the stranger? How about the person's proper name given second hand?

I digress. My point is that Nanquent may have some knowledge about the first group, a possible link to the surviving character and suspicion that more trouble is brewing. I don't know the composition of the fallen characters but a paladin, or cleric of Good, should be enough evidence that someone out there is gunning for the doomdreamers.

Sounds good
Trithereon,

Ok, so Nanquent gets the stuff and shows up asking ?'s.

Finds that their is a Cleric of Pelor, an odd Paladin and two others. Thier is very little in their equipment other than some cult symbols they had found earlier to indicatie their motives other than being good.

She questions Mereclar and the other guards to get description of the halfling that left. Is able to scry her and sees her running scared, which may or may not be a concern.

Goes back and tells Hendrac, so now they are on watch for incursions by the forces of good.

What will this mean to the rest of the CRM? ANd how screwed are my PC's? :evil

BTW Thanks for all the input guys

Re: Sounds good
Is the Halfling rejoining the new group? It didn't sound like it.

What does this mean for the PCs? Two things:

1) There's a rumor about Rastor of a strange woman asking around after adventurers. Basic description of Naquient. Party never meets her here, just knows someone is asking around and interested.

2) Party finds a new, fresh head nailed to the doors of the West Gate. A Halfling's head. A Heal check (DC 25) will reveal nasty claw-marks, perhaps demonic in origin.

Now, if the Halfling IS part of the group, that puts another light on the story. The PCs can intervene and prevent the Halfling from being slaughtered by a summoned demon (nothing major here...I'm thinking even a Quasit would suffice...just something to say "no, we take it back, you can't leave with your life").

Proceed with the rest as-writ. If the whole party, save the halfling, died in the attempt and the Halfling was deprived of posession and turned loose to flee, there's no real loose ends for Naquient to worry about tieing up, and it's "business as usual" back at the CRM by the time the new party shows up. The only additional bit would be if the party is victorious at the gate, and questions Mereclar, it'll come out that there was "fallout" from the last group.

That, and the PCs might get a kick out of recognizing the old gear of their old PCs layed out in a room in the OF as I earlier suggested.

Re: Sounds good
Ok,

You are correct, that the halfling is not part of the group, and will not be returning of her own free will. ;)

I will try and have her head show up at some point, but probably not at the front gate at this point, seeing as they have already cleared it for the moment. It just depends on what they do when they get into the trog area after chasing the cleric and run into trouble there.

I will also make sure they find the stuf at some point in the fanes. (a few months down the road)

Thanks and keep the ideas coming this is good stuff.
