Quick Reference
My 6-person, 9th level party is making their first entrances into the Outer Fane, and are quickly finding that everything is much bigger and more organized than them. Just a survey, did most groups take multiple, quick stabs at the Outer Fane before they even thought about taking out Hedrack or going to the Inner Fane? If not, what were the strategies employed? I recall reading many, many stories in which parties make multiple entries into the OF, each time getting their buttocks handed to them. It seems like there's a gap between the highest level for CRM (9th), and the minimum level needed to hold one's own in the OF. Mayhaps this is just to create a sense of "this is the big leagues" in the party before they can really handle anything.

Oh, and how many parties actually went ALL THE WAY AROUND the CRM? And if not that, then just killing all four temples? (My party had three, and some wanted to go get the Water Temple to pump up a bit before tackling the Outer Fane. They didn't do that, of course...)

Re: Quick Reference
my party wiped out three temples, nearly resulting in a TPK when they took on fire with the aid of water...

they then wanted to get water and would have done so if they hadn't received a letter by Vacharan urging them to hit the fanes...

on top of that, all the torches and all fire effects now have a purple glow instead of a normal one and the weather is really bad, despite it is early summer...

they now know it's time to hit to fanes or kiss the world goodbye :evil

Re: Quick Reference
I'm pretty sure my group intends on taking out the whole of the CRM before thinking about the masters of the place out in the island in the middle; I'm also concerned that there might be a gap between the difficulty of the CRM and the Outer Fane, so I'm planning a side trek into the Underdark using Queen of Lies to provide a bit more of a boost (haven't thought this through quite yet - I have some time still, as three of the four temples are still standing).

To do this, I'm going to have to de-emphasise the timeline pressure to save the world, which seems at odds with many of the regulars' feelings on this board - I plan on dropping hints, but I don't want things to get too rushed until they've dealt with most of the Outer Fane...

Thought I would point out that no one has really answered his question. ;)

I can't as my group is still in the CRM.

Re: Quick Reference

My party went right at the main door, and got as far as the Water Temple. They took out Air, Fire, and Water, and then doubled back and accessed the Outer fane via the Water Door. They never even saw the Earth Temple, although they knew where it was.

This sequence also included a trip to Verbobonc between taking out Fire and Water, where I did some homebrew stuff with them to drive up their XP a little.

Edit : D'oh, even when I try to answer the question I only manage half of it. My party was of the short-quick-stabs approach, although they did always have the intent of taking out Hedrack. They knew about him even before the assault on the OF, thanks to contacts from Varachan and some lucky scrying. They've been getting further and further into the Outer Fane on each assault, despite the mobilisation of forces within which their first breach caused. On one assault they actually met Varachan, who took the risk of seeking them out and gave then some rough info on the layout and population of the Fane. They've been using that info to plan their assaults, and I think that they believe that if they can get to Varachan's room then they can make a foothold there....... We shall see.....:evil

Re: Quick Reference
Well, I can't give a perfect answer either, but I can give some ideas based on my party's actions.

Up to this point, they have been doing a modified 'quick strike' method. They took out the mian entrance, and then holed up in area 6. In the last session that steamrolled through the earth temple, but are now seriously considering moving outside to rest up. That's all they've done so far, but I know these guys and I don't see their tactics changing. They are also extremely methodical players, and they will spend all sorts of time trying to uncover every secret door, etc., in the place. So I'm thinking they will do the full circuit of the CRM. Of course, they will be harried by assasins and stalkers, but they will most likely keep barreling onward.
