"Radiation Accident" for 3.5e
My party is just about to head for the CRM, maybe next session, maybe the one after. I figure that by the time 3.5e is released, and I have a chance to update things, they should have a couple temples down, and be getting close to ready for their first foray into the fanes.

So, I'm going to switch to 3.5e with a "radiation accident" type event; I figure that's right around the point in the timeline where the doomdreamers start making real progress in advancing their agenda, and perhaps that's when they discover that Lareth is the Champion.

I'm going to let the players take advantage of the changes by swapping some feats or even a level or two between classes for multiclass characters -- I'll also let people swap levels into any of the new PrCs in the DMG (we play core books only, so currently no-one has any PrCs, though one cohort is on the way towards Arcane Archer).

Any suggestions for ways to make this kind of thing feel spooky in the game? One idea I had was to mess with the seasons -- it should be deep summer by then in game time (it's currently late april), so I'll have a freak blizzard that doesn't seem to end. Any other ideas?

Re: "Radiation Accident" for 3.5e
Well, I'm thinking it almost has to be an instantaneous event. I think of it being a "wave of energy" emanating from the Black Spike upon the discovery of the Champion. For an image, think of the first destruction of Sauron in the beginning of the Fellowship of the Ring. If you use sound and can get that sound bite, that would definitely be cool. The color of the energy would of course be purple, and everyone's vision might have a purple haze for a couple of days afterwards. Making things cold might also work, but don't drag it on too long. I think a two day long (at most a week) hail storm in subzero temperatures would be fine (look up the rules on subzero temperatures).
