DIY Imix
My group met Imix yesterday - I'd been pondering how to give the Big Bad a suitably impressive presence on the gaming table, and eventually decided that repainting a spiderman action figure just wasn't going to cut it...

...I bought some modelling wire, a few tubs of play-doh in nice firey colours and sat down for an hour or so bending a 3D frame for 50' tall Imix, then squeezed the play-doh onto the frame and did some basic moulding...he got a modelling-wire sword, an obex on his chest and a nice flamey crown, but otherwise was pretty basic firey orange with little crests of flame licking over his body.

All in all I reckon about two hours work went into him, then I baked him on a low heat for a couple of hours to dry him out a little and finished him off with a quick lick of red, orange and yellow paint.
I'd have taken a lot longer to paint a miniature of comparable size (and I can't think of anything that would have done the job), plus he's a one-off. Imix is not going to be used again, so I wanted to keep the effort to a minimum.

And the effort was well rewarded when the players jaws dropped as he emerged - up to this point they knew Imix was involved but they never actually expected to meet him.
It's once of those moments DMs live for :evil
I'll post pics to Zans' site when they're developed. :)

In case anyone else wants to give this a go, here's what I learned from the experience:
1. Modelling clay or plasticine would probably work, but would be heavier, and might not come in such day-glo colours - it would definitely bake better though (play-doh not really meant to stay stiff).
2. When making the frame I reinforced the legs to bear the weight and deliberately didn't try to 'fill' the sword, as I thought the weight would be too much for the arms and overall balance.
3. Balancing the frame first (big 'round' feet, and a swordsman's stance) so that it stood up meant that the 'completed' figure didn't need adjusting too much once the extra weight of the play-doh was added.

Sounds like a fine piece of craftmanship :) .

Though I would be even more interested in your party“s encounter with IMIX ! So would you mind giving it away ?
I always wondered about how this encounter might end ...

Haven't got to the conclusion of the fight yet, but it's in the thread The Final Battle! :)

Hi,

Out of curiosity, where are the PC's fighting IMIX, within the Fire Node? or with the Recovered Temple ?(Area 30 where the horn is.)

Final Battle in the Greater Temple
Imix, Lareth et. al. have come out of the Fire Node to try the ritual to free Tharizdun - the PCs sat waiting around the Greater Temple guessing that they'd have to come back throught the Fire Gate at some point...check out this thread pub58.ezboard.com/fokayyo...2841.topic for an account thus far.

I decided having read another account (I can't remember whose, now :x ) of an all-out fight to stop the ritual that this was the way to go for a big finish.

Re: Final Battle in the Greater Temple
I went a slightly different route with "creating" Imix. Paper Mache over a wire frame.

It's not going to win any awards, but the sheer scale of it was enough to convey the necesary terror to the players. I'll have pictures up soon.

Another Imix model
These DIY Imix models sound fantastic. It would be great if we could see pics of any of them at some point. I'm sure everyone here would be interested.

My group is still in the Outer Fane, so Imix won't be making an appearance in our game for a while. However, when he does, I have the visual element already sorted. I have a 12 inch tall Carnage (Spiderman bad guy) figure, one of those vinyl glue-together-and-paint efforts. All flowing reds and blacks, with wildly trailing tentacle things all over. I can't WAIT to see my players' expressions when I plonk the model down on the gameboard.

Check my end-of-campaign wrapup. I've posted pictures of my Imix. Not all that impressive, and even less so with the blurry pictures, but it'll give you some idea.

Fuzzy pictures!
Well, there IS a fuzzy beholder in there somewhere, but it's just a fuzzy picture of a beholder.

One of the gang took some photos of Imix, Lareth and Corben(being ambushed by a 'fuzzy' beholder) with his phone.

They're small and a little grainy, but the Imix gives and idea of scale (though you can't see all the loving detail :) .

I've got some hopefully clearer pics in a roll of film waiting to be developed. Anyway, I'll post these to Zans' site.

Play-doh Imix lasted a couple of weeks (long enough to get his arrogant, firey a$$ kicked) and has dried out quite nicely, though he does now sport a series of serious looking cracks - but I reckon he'll last a good few years now!

Re: Fuzzy pictures!
I was thinking of scanning in the cover of the DMG 1e, do some scaling, touch ups, and then printing it out and pasting on cardboard for a 2d Imix.

Re: Fuzzy pictures!
How about taking the one out of the module and colorizing it? The original FF has Imix in it, but I don't remember how the picture looks.

Yup.

I'll have to check the 1e FF. But the one in the module is a little lame I think. I think it may be easier to do a little photoshopping of the Efreeti than some coloring of the other two.

My group just entered the CRM via South Entrance so I have a long time. I'll wait and see if someone else does this first or I see some big red humanoid creature in Walmart or the dollar store.

Other Improvised Figs
McDs has He-Man action figs for Happy Meals right now. There are two tiger like creatures that could probably be mocked up with some glue and toothpicks for a pretty good Huge Howler.

McDs had Galador stuff for Happy meals at one time. The black one makes an excellent Large to Huge Iron Golem. While the blue one makes a good (actually quite evil looking) Large to Huge Water Elemental.

Play-doh Imix pics posted
I uploaded a 400K zip of pics of my Play-doh Imix to ZansForCans' site today.
A few are 'posed' and a few are actual in-game pics.

I wish now that I'd had the foresight to take pics of 'the birth of Imix' in case anyone else wanted to give it a go. Ach well.
He cost under £5 and a couple of hours to make. And he was well worth it. It's almost a shame he can't be a recurring bad-guy :)
