RP XP and Other Interesting Questions
Well, if you read my last campaign log you'll see that my party spent a lot of time in RP mode this last session. They bargained, sold, confronted, and interacted. They took out Tal Chammish and set the village on the path of recovery without killing him. They rid Verbobonc of a nasty poison seller.

Now, how do I award XP for this stuff? They should definitely get XP for the whole Tal business, and I want to make sure I reward them for other stuff, otherwise they'll never want to do it again. How would you reward them?

Re: RP XP and Other Interesting Questions
That was quite a good session you had. I'd consider using there average level as a base (each) and then modify it from there. That's equivalent to four encounters, which seems about right for that night. Then, I'd give each a little more here and there for specific events, but try to keep everyone close together (i.e. Juuda didn't do as much as Brickle, but don't award Brickle too much more than Juuda). I'm thinking 100-300 more apiece. Make sure you tell them what the extra is for so that it encourages that sort of thing. You might also tell them outright how you came up with the experience points, considering that some of your players are experienced DM's themselves. Also, it would not be a bad idea to actually involve them in the computation and get some ideas from them. You'd be surprised sometimes at how fair some players are with their own characters' XP.

Er, so what are the other interesting questions? :)

Roleplay XP
In the d20 Call of Cthulhu game, XP can be handed out using something called Story Goals. Each goal is worth a base reward of 300 XP. If you multiply this amount by the average character level and then divide it by the number of characters and award it to the characters then the characters will advance in a level after fulfilling around thirteen Story Goals.

If you use this method for significant roleplaying successes then you might find that your PCs will try to talk their way out of all problems!

[plug]IMO, the d20 CoC is a great book and I am hoping I can translate it into a great game some time in the future (maybe after RttToEE). I highly recommend it to anyone who is a fan of that roleplaying genre.[/plug]

Re: Roleplay XP
I decided to use the modified XP debt death rules someone posted here a while ago. As a twist, since the XP awards are already pretty high in this adventure, I give RP awards that go into a pool that the player can draw from if they die to pre-paid off part of the debt they get from dying. This way, I don't feel like I'm accelerating their leveling much, but they still get rewarded for RP as their character won't be as far behind if (when? :evil ) they die.

I think you could do this for the standard death rules as well. Just have a pool that they can only draw from after death.

(see the house rules section of my campaign site, if you're interested in the details)

Well, I wrote the subject line before I wrote the message. I guess there weren't any other questions. I'm sure I can come up with something if you REALLY want me to . . .

I'll have to think about this a bit more. . . What do you think would be a fair ballpark figure for an avg. party level of 7? 2000xp/each? More/less?

Re: RP XP and Other Interesting Questions
If you use the Story Goals idea then its just a matter of figuring out what the goals are ... a 7th level party would get 2100 XP to be divided among them for each of the following:

Uncover Tal Chamish's secret drug trade - 2100 XP
Defeat Tal's drug ring (he and all his followers) - 2100 XP
Discover the antidote for Tanbrosh - 2100 XP
Save the surviving town's addicts - 2100 XP

If they accomplish all of those goals and there are 4 PCs then they'd get 2100 XP each, less if there are more then 4 PCs as you divide each Story Goal award by the number of PCs.

Of course, if the challenge just wasn't there and they breeze through the whole Tal Chamish storyline then feel free to reduce the XP total by a 1/4, or even 1/2.
