Comparative Time to Finish
One of my players was curious about how fast they are going through the module as compared to other parties.
We have had about 8 sessions, and they have cleared out the Earth Temple and then headed south and just killed Vranthis. These sessions generally run 5-6 hours. I don't run a lot of randome encounters, either.
How does this compare with other games out there?

kicking our but
My group just finished session 17, and finally killed everyone at the main gate and a few of the Earth Temple Trogs.
Our sessions average 4 hours each.
But we have had a few set backs* and atleast one night was an encounter I had added.
* this included 2 party members getting arrested the first night in Hommlet (game 1)
* losing most of party on the first try at main gate
* losing 3 more party members on the second try at main gate/earth temple.

We're way behind, I think
Wow, we're really behind, I guess -- we've had 11 sessions, and still haven't made it to the CRM, and we play long sessions (usually at least 6 hrs). We're playing #12 tomorrow, and the players told me they plan to go to the moathouse to clean out Lareth's chamber, and then to Nulb to lay the smackdown on the undead.
If I'm lucky, that'll go quick, and they might end the session entering Rastor; I plan to move things along by having the back part of the moathouse already cleared by Nierethi, Yundi and Questin while our heroes were busy buying magic weapons in Verbobonc.

Re: We're way behind, I think
We just finished session 18 with 3-3.5 hour sessions. They went to Nulb, went to the Ruined Temple and might think about going to Rastor in another session or two.

Wow. It sounds like we're speeding through it. Do your groups do a ton of role-play? My group spend VERY little time in Hommlet, a bit more in Rastor, but they tend to be more of the hack-and-slash type for the most part.

Re: We're way behind, I think
My group has had at least one mostly-roleplay session in Hommlet (looking at my records, the only fight that session was 3 wandering hobgoblins on the road to the moathouse). Also, I should probably clarify that of those 11 sessions I mentioned, we didn't actually start RTTTOEE until the 5th session; the first 3 sessions we played up from 1st level on the road to Hommlet, starting in Verbobonc.

Re: We're way behind, I think
What surprises me more is the fact that you know exactly how many sessions you already have played We started over a year ago and if I had run the CRM, my players would be nearly ready to go into the Outer Fane. I combined the scenario with the Banewarrens though, which they have nearly finished. Of course, the Banewarrens is a bit slower since there are a lot more role-playing oppertunities in that adventure.

Re: We're way behind, I think
Heh. It's all due to a fundamental lack of trust. I keep track all the PC's XP, so I just counted the number of XP charts in my notebook. In fact, looking closer at one of them, I think I missed a session, since one XP chart appears to have been used for two sessions in a row.

Re: We're way behind, I think
We've had 16 sessions and the party has yet to reach Rastor, though they will next time when we start back up in a month or two. They are very thorough, though, leaving no stone unturned in their quest to eradicate evil from the world. It's easy for me to count them because I write up a detailed log, by session.

25 sessions
After 25 sessuions (usualy 6 hours each)
My party has destroyed 3 temples (the fire temple was then subsiquently diserted) and is about to launch an attack on the outer fane.
this does not include a 10-session side-jaunt to the Heart of Nightfang spire.

Re: 43 Sessions
You guys are fast!
My group plays weekly for about four hours per session. We often take half an hour to settle down, discuss game mechanics, recap, and get the atmosphere set before the action starts, so real gaming time is more like 3.5 hours.
I kept brief notes for each session. Here's a summary:
10 sessions -- Hommlet and the Moathouse.
2 (12 total) -- Nulb and Lareth
2 (14) -- The Ruined Temple
1 (15) -- Rastor
17 (32) -- The CRM before attracting Hedrack's attention. Main gate, earth temple, north bridge complex, mines near main gate, water temple, first message from Varachan.
6 (38 ) -- More CRM while harassed by Hedrack. Fire bridge, dwarven temple, Eye of Tulian, various outer fane responses.
5 (43) -- Outer Fane hit and run -- mostly run! Met Hedrack. Defeated assassins, Ukemil, and Naquent. Stole Orb of Silver Death, and Arms and Armor of the Champion of Elemental Evil.
Hedrack has now identified the Champion of Elemental Evil, who isn't Lareth in my Campaign. The party knows about the recovered temple and the inner fane, but they're hesitant to move on without thoroughly defeating the outer fane forces. Next session should be good!
We have also had a number of side quests that I haven't included.
As you can see, my group takes a more leisurely pace than many.

Currently 64 Sessions
64 sessions, we normally play once a week, each session is about 4-5 hours.
The party are probably only 3-5 sessions away from
killing or attempting to kill Imix. They still havn't really explored the Inner Fane and parts of the outer fane.

Re: Currently 4 Sessions
We just had our fourth session today, and we are currently in the CRM, having taken out the main gate, the earth temple and the northern Bridge areas. Each of our sessions seems to go for about 10 hours each. It still feels like we are flying through the campaign though....I haven't been adding in any side quests or anything, just playing through the book as written.
