Hedrack Battle
Hi

So my party are about to face Hedrack and the rest of the surviving Outer Fane forces in the Greater Temple. The party has done well in taking out a considerable amount of the OF, and this is pretty much going to be a last stand for the survivors. I wonder if anyone has any suggestions for interesting things to do in this situation, to make the battle really memorable. The party HATES Hedrack after all the pain and suffering he's dealt them, and they're itching to get their hands on him once and for all.

The survivors who will be present for this battle are : Hedrack, the two Drow, the Elder Earth Elemental, one of the Dark Nagas, and the Ogres from room 37. The Cornugon is still alive somewhere too, as it fled from a previous battle when it was nearly killed. However, I'm loathe to add it to the mix since there is already a formidable force up against the PCs. I'm thinking of keeping it as a reserve, to be used if it seems right. Same with the Invisible Stalkers, which are out hunting a fleeing Varachan but could easily be 'on their way back' if needed. Oh, and the Hounds Of Darkness should be there too.

The party are average 12th level, 4 members - elven wizard, dwarven fighter, half-elf monk, human cleric. A pretty generic bunch. They also have Vister the Elven Paladin from the prison, but she's only 7th level and probably won't last very long at all. They know that they are most likely going to face some well-entrenched opposition in the Greater Temple, and they're about to prepare with Death Wards and other buffs.

Everybody, bad guys and PCs, are fresh in terms of HP and spells. The bad guys in the Greater Temple know the PCs are coming very imminently, and will be taking the necessary spell-buffing measures.

I guess what I'm asking for are any suggestions on cool things anyone has done or would do in this situation. I'd really like to make this battle one of the stand-out fights of the campaign, so any suggestions at all will be welcome.

Thanks!

SIERK

Re: Hedrack Battle
Sounds like a TPK about to happen.

The drow do a nice set of buffs together. The Earth Elemental lays down some wicked hurt by itself. Hedrack will just brutalize them with blasphemy and destruction/disintegrate.

Any one of those encounters should be challenging to a group of 4. I shudder to think of them all happening together.

Hmmm..
Then don't have Hedrack fight directly.. have him use a harm spell once then buff up his party, then fled.. he want to have another chance to buy Triad some times. Since you mentions that Varachan is retreating, Hedrack may want to pursuit Varachan since he have more information (by the way, where is Varachan at this moment), thus being a bigger threat. However, if Hedrack FAILED to capture Varachan, he may want to strike a deal with Tarren and recruit him to his cause, promising him a plant temple *a complete lie, but tempting enough nevertheless* leading the final confrontation between PC and the party. No Hold Barred!

If Hedrack is clearly losing, he will mutter "You fought well, now slay me.. thus I do not want to be humilate by the Triad". This will leave some hints to the PC what they are about to face.

Possibly, possibly not
I see your point, but believe me it can be done. I've seen it done in almost exactly the same situation, when another group which I once played with when I was in the USA but had to leave upon returning home ran the same adventure. If the PCs know what they are facing (they do), are well prepared (they will be), and are good at working together tactically (they are), then it will be extremely difficult but not neccesarily a TPK.

They were given considerable assistance by Varachan, both in a material and an information-providing sense. They are definitely smart enough to know to RUN if things are going badly, and it may turn out that they turn tail as soon as they break through the darkness and see what awaits them.

Point taken though, and perhaps the EEE would be better left at the Earth Door.

However, this is How It Would Be given the events which have transpired in the Outer Fane, at least IMO. To not have the survivors make a stand together like this would be unrealistic I think, and I'm pretty sure my party would think so too.

Edit:

I like this, thanks. They have equally stong levels of fear and hatred regarding Hedrack, and it would freak them out a whole lot if HE showed such fear of The Triad...
