Deck of Many Things: Any takers?
Does anyone have any stories to share about how their party reacted (and were effected) by the Deck of Many Things in the Inner Fane?
That encounter is very late in the module, but it can have such game shattering effects, I'm particularly wondering if anyone has any regrets about using it. Anyone lose a favourite character to the Void or Donjon after 2 years of play? Anyone give out any benefits that ended up being too unbalancing?

With the Donjon card, I'd have the PC trapped in the Dreaming Stone. That way, the character won't be lost. You might even want to create a small solo dream adventure for him. If he makes it, he's free, if not, then it'll take a lot for the group to get him free.
The Void could trap his psyche with Imix - in a goblet, or (if you're nasty) his sword.
BTW, my group hasn't reached that part yet, but these were just some ideas, if yours is close.

Here is the link to the Deck of Many Things cards that were put out in Dragon Magazine.
This fortunately was a missing addition that they forgot to add in the disks for the Dragon Mag Archive and put up on the site.
The cards have decent artwork on them. Print them on cardstock.
You may note that one of the pages scanned in crooked. If you have Adobe or some type of photo editor you should be able to tilt it correctly so that the backs match the fronts.
Here is the link.

I modified those cards slightly and added a purplish tinge. These are on Zans's site under the Inner Fane folder. The smaller ZIP file is just the Word document description of the Tainted Deck (slightly updated from the BoB). The larger file contains the Word document and all the BMP images. Let me know how you like it.

Re: Deck of Many Things: Any takers?
Those are great ideas about the Donjon and Void, Siobharek; keeps the cards dangerous without making them "rip up the character sheet".
I've already printed out the cards from that Dragon article; I tried to match up the backs, but didn't have much luck, so I just ended up putting the fronts in opaque-backed card sleeves. Still looks pretty good.
It'll be a long while before my group hits that part, but I've always had a thing for that artifact, and was wondering if I could keep looking forward to it or should worry about ripping it out. With those suggestions for tying the worst of the cards back into the adventure, I'll definitely keep it in.

Deck...
I plan on putting them in the dreaming stone (donjon) with the added 'horror' of replacing a level with a level of tainted one (some Dragon mag, don't have it here at work) for every day spent in the stone. Once all levels replaced, character is dead. Legend Lore, Commune, etc. would reveal this to a degree, giving necessary the urgency to free the trapped character (should they think of it).
The Void is different, and I think I'll make it the only character sheet ripper...It just fits that the soul is sent to the Tharizduns realm...and that is pretty much is that!
As for the taint and the tainted one class, I also use the Demonstone in this manner...It promises "power" if the character only agrees to accept it...a level of tainted one is ADDED and may be taken as new levels are gained...the Dragon Mag also offers some ideas for 'taint' points...I use those a lot. Eating the apple in the moathouse gives taint, the demonstone possesser gets taint, touching the various greater altars, etc... very spikey stuff. The players all have some level of taint at this point, and they are all freaked out by the disturbing dreams they have. One player ( a cleric) is so tainted he gets "suggestions" to hurt his friends...but so far has managed to save...I usually slip him a post-it note: "Kill the Wizard! He is an abomination to Pelor! He dabbles with the Dead Kill him now while he is weak" then have him make a save...he plays it up pretty good...shunning the wizard (in this case), being snippy, etc.
lots of fun.
