Who comes to the Arena?
As Infiniti just pointed out again in another thread, the Gargoyles running the Areana Pit are not allied with the Air Temple; they have the Earth subtype, and can in fact be turned by the Air Temple clerics. But they're blocked in on all sides by the Air temple complex, with the temple barbican to the west, and the temple-allied cloakers to the east. So who comes to the pit games, and how do they get there reasonably safely?

I'd like to have a pit game in progress when my party gets there (possibly in the next session), but I'm really having trouble figuring out the "ecology" of that area.

More then likely the main visitors to the arena would be the common soldiers. Since the pit is so close to the main entrance, most common soldiers can go there by going outside through the nearest exit and walk over relatively savely. They are also not as closely allied to a particular temple to get into trouble when entering the air temple area. Of course, during matches different factions might turn against each other in tavern brawl like fashion, but that would not be much of a problem. I don't think any high ranking cleric of officer closely allied with one of the temples would visit the arena though. The risk of being assassinated there is simply too high.

If you like the splat book revision of Kellial I wrote up, and the Air Temple has not been destroyed (or Kellial still lives), I'd put Kellial in combat, with maybe five or so commoners. He can take his sweet time with them, make the pain last, and get as much pleasure from the crowd as possible.

IIRC, there were some threads on this awhile back, so you might be able to find some other ideas there if no one adds more. I'd suggest you check Page 21 or start flipping through this.

I'd be interested in some ideas, too, as my group will be hitting the CRM in a month or so.

Re: Who comes to the Arena?
Inifiniti, I'm not too concerned about who fights in the arena, more about who watches (and pays). The gargoyles are doing this for profit, so they must be doing something to ensure a steady flow of patrons.

I think I'm going to go with Madfox's suggestion, and assume that there's a kind of uneasy truce between the gargoyles and the air temple; the air temple knows they can control the gargoyles if they need to, so they tolerate their presense in exchange for a share of the profits from the games, and guarantee safe entrance to guardsmen from the other temples for the weekly saturday-night games. Well, mostly safe. Occasionally a guard from one of the other temples ends up in the pit. :)

It's currently Monday morning IMC, so there won't be a game going on today. But if the party ever happens to find themselves near a guarded area or on the road between the gates on a Saturday evening, they'll notice that most of the thugs are missing from their usual posts, and there's a lot of activity near the south gate.

Heh... thinking about this more, I've come up with an idea for if my party goes to the South gate in the next session (which starts the morning of may 15 IMC). When they get there, they'll see a ripped piece of parchment tacked to the door. I've prepped a handout for the parchment, which reads:

SATURDAY MAY 13
FIGHT!
The Air Temp.........
CAPTAIN...............
TAKES..................
Are You...................
Do Yo.....................

The original text of the poster, before I ripped it, was:

SATURDAY MAY 13
FIGHT!
The Air Temple's Own
CAPTAIN KELLIAL
TAKES ON ALL COMERS!
Are You Man (Or Beast) Enough?
Do You Have What It Takes?
