Blakey's Campaign Log
Well, I actually got my campaign up and running last night. First session was a huge success. No deaths (apart from a few orcs), a tiny weeny teaser about the Cult of the Elder Elemental Eye and some excellent roleplaying to boot.

The full web page is here: uk.geocities.com/homlett/ Click on the Session Notes link and go to Session 1.

Some extra information which doesn't occur on the session notes and which is relevant to the RttToEE: -

The half-orc rogue, Greydore (18 strength, great axe wielder who hates orcs), was approached by a man dressed all in black (and thus clearly a baddy :rolleyes ) and paid 50gp to ensure that "a human by the name of Will Armalet reaches Hommlet in the next few weeks". I think Greydore took this to mean that he was being paid to kill the merchant Will Armalet, which was Greydore's mistake, but we shall see. He was actually being paid to make sure that when they got to Hommlet someone booked into the inn under the name Will Armalet - as this is the person that Chat is looking out for.

Will, the merchant they are hired to protect, is carrying humanitarian aid to Hommlet - he thinks it's for the Church of Pelor but he's actually been hired by the cult of the EEE just to arrive in Hommlet with the chest of aid. The chest does indeed contain aid (not that the church of Pelor asked for or even need any aid) but in a secret compartment in the lid of the chest is a message to Master Dunrat from the head of a small cult cell in Safeton (where the party started out). This letter is why all the set up has been made.

Chat is going to look out for a merchant by the name of Will Armalet arriving, steal into his room and kill him and then take the note and give it to Master Dunrat. He will then systematically try and kill all the PCs.

Now, it might be that Will survives the trip to Hommlet, but if he doesn't I hope the party (assuming Greydore tells them all by then) at least take the bait and have one of the humans pretending to be "Will Armalet" when they arrive in Hommlet just to see what happens. This will result in an assassination attempt on that PC by Chat. If not Chat will try and kill the real Will Armalet. All very complex, but I hope you follow my drift!! :\

Anyway, when Greydore was being chatted to by the "man in black" he noticed the man had a small almost hidden lapel badge in the shape of an upside down black triangle with an inverted yellow Y. He drew the shape and took it to a sage for information. So he's heard of the Cult of the EEE and knows it's to do with Hommlet and a little about the original ToEE. He's been given the name of the sage in Hommlet and told to ask there for more details. So, we have a slight teaser about the EEE but at present only one player knows anything about it as he's roleplaying well and has said he's not going to share this sort of information with people he's just met, so he's leaving it a few days before he says anything.

So, 4 out of 5 players are unaware of this fact, so I've left it off the write up. Hence this long ramble.

Anyway, latest session notes are up on the web page and I'm hoping to have a few players journals started over the weekend to post. Will also try and get some relevant maps posted soon.

Any comments would definitely be appreciated!!

Zathras' Journal is now on the web page too and we're playing the second session tonight. I reckon maybe 8 or so more sessions to arrive in Hommlet and being the campaign proper...

Errr, I know we haven't got onto the main module yet, but is anyone reading any of these?? :\

Updated my web page with 3rd session update. The PCs have reached 3rd level now and are on their way to Hommlet.

The next adventure will see them investigating an old temple to the fire element, locked for ten years. They'll pick up a few more hints and bits of information on the EEE there if they are good.

Not long till we reach Hommlet the real beginning now!

I read them. You have a real nice web site and good writing. I look forward to the real beginning. :)

PS That timed geocities ad is most annoying. Geocities is one host I hate visiting, so I assume a lot of other people do as well. It is often suggested that if you really want people to read the logs, you should post them here as well, or do like ZansForCans does and post a summary here and the fictionalized log on the website. In any case, these updates are much appreciated, and you should use the link ezCode for the website in every other update message.

Hey Infiniti2000,

Glad to hear someone's reading my work - makes it worthwhile! :-)

Can you (or anyone else) suggest a free web page where you don't get annoying adverts? I'm stuffed if I'm going to pay for a web page! :)

I guess I could just cut and paste my session notes into here. Would it be bad form given that at present they're not actually playing RTTToEE?

"Can you (or anyone else) suggest a free web page where you don't get annoying adverts?"
I don't think it exists. I will say that geocities has gotten better and is certainly way better than angelfire. I refuse to even go to an angelfire site. Sure, I can install Pop-Up Stopper (or others), but it is still annoying.

"Would it be bad form given that at present they're not actually playing RTTToEE?"
Since there are only three, no, but you risk people not reading through them to get to the module-related stuff. Starting with the next session (in Hommlet), you could start doing a quick summary here (maybe one paragraph), if you have the time. That way, anyone interested in the full story can check out the web page. Posting a summary here is more useful if you plan on asking for questions and help, however.

Cheers for the suggestions.

It'll be a few sessions yet till they reach Hommlet - so I'll start posting my session notes directly to the board as and when they do (starting a new thread I think) and if anyone is really interested in the whole campaign prelude (i.e. what we're playing now) then they can always go to the web page and read it there.

Re: Blakey's Campaign Log
We played our 4th session last night. Quite interesting and the whole EEE link is now mostly exposed. The party have encountered symbols of the EEE (black Y-fronts symbol) in a few places and have intercepted a letter from one Master to Master Dunrat in Hommlet which mentions the Dark One - and their research led them to discover that the Dark One is the Big T. So they are quite confused. :-)

They know that *something* is going on and they have heard about the Moathouse near Hommlet and a place called the Temple of All Consumption - which at present they *think* is the Temple of Elemental Evil. They are heading towards Hommlet with greater urgency now and should get there soon (another session or 2 I think). I'm slightly worried about their low power levels (currently 3rd, projected 4th when reaching Hommlet) but I'll address that in another thread.

I'll start another proper thread for my session notes to sit on this page when they actually reach Hommlet, but there's no doubt that the last session was really where the main RTtToEE campaign started in earnest as they begun to realise that a cult worshipping a deity called the Elder Elemental Eye is up to something in the region of Hommlet -maybe in the moat house or the old temple of elemental evil. They have heard of the Big T but have no idea as to his involvement so far or how all their scattered and partial information fits together. Frankly, they are quite confused. :evil

Anyway, the latest session notes are on the web page, and I've also updated all the handouts, maps, locale information, NPC list, etc, etc, etc.

As usual, any comments on the web page, the campaign as it's progressing or anything at all is always appreciated!

Just posted session 6 to the web page - played last night. They still haven't reached Hommlet, are now just short of 5th level and will be arriving next session for definite! :)

Any comments anyone?

P.S. I'm soon moving my web page to pipex - am in the process of migrating my broadband access over to them and when I get there I get 50MB of space to host this and all my other 3rd edition D&D web pages, plus an online Greyhawk Gazetteer you might find interesting/useful. More info as it happens...

Session #7
Session #7 is up on the web page, plus loads of extra bits.

The party finally reached Hommlet!

They skirted around the village of Nulb on their way into Hommlet having been warned by a few people that it was haunted. They did see Lareth sitting out on his porch, smoking a pipe in the village. They didn't go in. Good foreshadowing there.

They met Kella who is a Shifter in my campaign. She will become Torrent's mentor next level when he wants to change class. She told them she was dealing with the hobgoblins in the temple. She often takes the form of an ogre. Bit more foreshadowing there too.

They reached Hommlet and settled into the inn. They met a few interesting NPCs.

They met Jaroo who Torrent suspected slightly (mind you, he suspected everyone!!). He said that the druid was too keen to tell him everything was fine in the village.

They met Chat at the bar but hardly talked to him.

They met Vesta and Maridosen and they definitely prefered the smiling Vesta to the marginally insolent Maridosen.

They met the bard who sang a song all about Prince Thrommel and told them that it had been discovered that the Prince Thrommel in Furyondy was an imposter and no one knew how long he'd been missing - the Scarlet Brotherhood and Iuz were suspected. (got these ideas off this board - thanks!).

Late in the evening Xaod burst in, drunk and bruised. He was "sent to bed" by Ostler, leaving the group amused.

For those following the stry so far, they also dropped off their pack of humanitarian supplies at the temple of pelor.

At the end of the session the players remarked that there was loads going on in Hommlet. I'm dead pleased about that as I think I've managed to convey a sense of a thriving little community. They even chatted to the dwarf who built the keep. All great stuff.

Next week Zathras is intending going to visit Spugnoir to find out what happened to his master Cirilli, and their next plan is the moat house. Now they don't yet know that Spugnoir is missing, last seen heading out to the moathouse with Cirili in tow, so that's gonna fit together nicely. Looking forward to it!

Any comments would be great - it's fab that they're really into the module proper now.

"The party finally reached Hommlet!" - It's about time! :)

Fluid must be fearsome after Torrent advanced him to 4HD. A wolf with trip is tough enough, a Large wolf...uggh. My player did the same thing, but advanced him to 5HD and then awakened him. Now, we have a Large wolf with an 18 Int (no, really, 3 sixes!) ... the bad guys shake in their boots! ;)

Will your group pick up Xaod, do you think?

Re: Session #7
Glad to hear someone's reading this account. :D

I'm not sure they'll pick up Xaod - they have 5 PCs plus the wolf and they are suspicious of *everyone*. They tend not to tell anyone their plans and are very careful that if they have a "party meeting" they are not overheard by anyone. So it might be difficult for them to pick up the bard, or Chat. In fact I can almost see Chat not being of any much use in the module, seeing as they are keeping a low profile.

Further to that, they completely misunderstood what they were supposed to do here when they got here, so the cult are not aware they are here (actually a blessing for the PCs!).

Hopefully the write ups will now become more interesting to everyone here...

Re: Blakey's Campaign Log
Session 8 is now posted on the web page.

In summary, the party did some talking to people, got more info about the area and its history and a few more clues and pointers and then headed off to the moat house.

Amazingly they actually parlayed with the dragon! Big U (not being hungry and being flattered in Draconic) listened and extracted a hefty toll in magic and money, but he let them into the dungeons mostly unmolested. His theory was that the party could take all the risks and bring him out a load of treasure. Interesting turn! (read the session notes for more details).

The group are about to head down into the depths of the dungeons in the next session...

Re: Blakey's Campaign Log
Hey guys,

Well, although my web page hasn't been updated in a long time, before today, the campaign has been running ahead full tilt. They are now deep in the CRM, using the dwarven temple as a base. I stopped writing up the sessions as DM after Session 8 - when they started playing RttToEE properly. I was worried about giving away too much information as a result of my write ups. I guess I could have still sent them here though.

Anyway, fortunately two players (Barishi, nominal party leader, and Zathras the mage) are still keeping journals so you can read about the campaign from two player's perspectives.

The players journals are a couple of weeks out of date due to holidays IRL, but should hopefully be brought back up to date this weekend fully.

Meanwhile I lost my EZBoard account "Blakey" and so have had to set up a new one. That was responsible for me being unable to post on here for a good few weeks which was very frustrating!!

Anyway, if you are interested in catching up with the affairs of Barishi, Zathras, Mycroft, Greydore, Torrent and Fluid the Wolf, go here: uk.geocities.com/homlett.

Re: Blakey's Campaign Log
Oh Dear.

Played what will be the last session for a while in my RttToEE campaign last week. TPK all bar one character out of 5. For those that have read the logs and party memoirs on my web page, Greydore the Half Orc rogue with the big axe survived whilst the lot were all slaughtered.

To cut a long story short it was mostly the party's own fault, with some hard nosed DMing by me thrown in. They decided to launch an assault on D'Gran's domain, from the safety of the Dwarven Temple. They entered through the south gates of his area, - the orcs having long ago been slaughtered by the party. They easily overcame the gnolls stationed there without alerting anyone in the complex. Things were going well. Then, for some reason, they decided to pass by all the doors in that part of the complex and proceed right to the heart of the area - the crossroads. Here they saw the giant guarding the bridge. That was when they decide to launch an attack on him from surprise, but without much thought to a plan. He survived the initial round and then shouted for help! All hell broke lose. Unfortunately the group hung around at the crossroads until they were eventually surrounded on all sides.

Greydore managed to flee (high movement rate due to haste spell and great tumble skill got him past the gnolls and hill giant guarding their way out). The rest were slowly cut down by the trolls and wizards and eventually D'Gran himself. Barishi managed to temporarily use Disguise spell to make him look like a temple guard and even managed to bluff D'Gran when questioned! However, eventually the spell ran out and he was caught trying to sneak to the armour store to get a real guard's uniform to wear - damn them trolls and their scent ability!

So, I've ruled (in the interest of campaign continuity) that D'Gran staked the party heads outside his domain to show his distain for the inturders - I figure he's that sure of himself. Fortunately Greydore snuck back a few days later and recovered the heads and escaped with them to Verbobonc. But not before Tessimon had sent a succubus to talk to him and find out a little about the party (their names and so on) so that Tessimon could Scry on them as they were getting close to the Fire Temple.

So, this leaves the campaign with Greydore heading off to Verbobonc with a sack of decaying heads (lovely) and 56 gp in his pocket. D'Gran's forces dumped the bodies of the adventurers into the Stalagos (I forgot to make sure they looted the party bodies, so the CRM flunkies forgot and chucked loads of goodies in there with them!). Greydore has to find a temple who will help him and then get all 4 bodies, plus Fluid the Wolf, fully Raised.

Now, this is going to cost SHED LOADs of cash which the party don't have and which I need to come up with a suitable quest that they can be made to do in return for their raising. I'm hoping that Greydore has the sense to take them to the temple of Xan Yae - as Barishi is a cleric of that goddess.

Anyway, all this means we are taking a well needed break from my campaign for a while to carry on with my friend's epic barbarians campaign where we are all Ice Barbarians trying to find the Five Blades of Corusk.

More news on my RttToEE in a few months when we start it back up. Meanwhile I will be after ideas for a suitable Quest for the party which can be linked to the RttToEE campaign in a subtle way. I'll start another thread for that though...

Cheers
