another question....(quick answer needed!)
If have got several questions now that the PC's have alomst cleared the moathouse.

1. Except from the journal of Geynor Ton, where do they learn that the Temple of All Consumption exists and where it exactly is located and that it is called ToAC?

2. How could I best describe the ToAC to the PC's and how can they learn that it has various entries?

3. How do they discover how the ToAC works (going from CRM to Outer and Inner Fanes)?

4. If they find the journal of Hedrack why wouldn't they go directly to the ToEE? And do they have to clean all of the ToAC?

I can probably find all this information in the book, but I am currently a bit short of time and I need this information for tonight's session.

Thanks!

At this point in your campaign you don't need to worry about giving much info to your players. It's a detective story for now - they find things out gradually.
The ToAC is VERY secret - nobody knows about it except the cult and folk in Rastor who know that some reclusive priests live there. Certainly no-one in Hommlet (among the good NPCs at least) knows anything about it. Your PCs definitely shouldn't be clued in about it this early.

Ton's journal points hints at the cultists in the Mill in Hommlet - Master Dunrat has a letter which mentions Rastor and 'the crater'. At this point the PCs don't know anything about the ToAC...that's all developed later, when they reach Rastor.

Well, right now, don't! They'll find this stuff out much later. The next step after clearing the moathouse is to root out the cultists in Hommlet, then go on and investigate one of Nulb, the Temple of Elemental Evil (occupied by the hobgoblins) or head on to Rastor. When they finally get to the crater there's a road which leads up to each gate - read the FAQ for the best ways to steer them to the 'easy' gate. The other ways in are hidden or secret - your PCs will have to be very lucky to find them from the outside of the crater (none of them have paths to them and they're at varying heights around the steep crater rim).

3. How do they discover how the ToAC works (going from CRM to Outer and Inner Fanes)?

By exploring it and interacting with the inhabitants. Lots of people come and go and not everyone knows every face - good bluffing can lead to quite a lot of information gathering - or they can just interrogate any important prisoners they take - most of the mooks know no great amount of useful information, but the leaders know the basics of how the cult heirarchy works.

They might well go straight to the ToEE - there's no need for them to enter the Inner Fane to thwart the cult, though the First and Third will be left to continue the cult's work if they don't take them out. If your PCs want to head straight from Hedrack's journal to the Temple, let them.

You're just beginning the campaign right now - the info that's available to the PCs builds up gradually - one clue leads them to the Mill, Dunrat's letter leads them to Rastor and 'the crater', from Rastor most anyone can tell them about Mount Stalagos and the priests there. In Nulb, Lareth might tell them that the ToEE's priests were deceived - that their power came from the cult of the EEE, nomatter what gods they thought they worshipped.
Once in the CRM, they find out more about the cult, including its similarity to the ToEE (elemental cults warring amongst themselves for dominance) and the leaders who live in the Fanes at the centre. By the time the PCs get their hands on Hedrack's journal, they should have most of the pieces of the picture - and Varachan can fill in the blanks where needed.
For now, all they need is the clue that the cult has agents in Hommlet, at the mill - things should move on from there almost by themselves.
Be careful what info you let slip early on - the PCs should 'peel the onion' to discover the true headquarters and purpose of the cult. Don't hand them too much too soon - it's a long campaign - make them work for their leads!

One early clue that I disliked (in retrospect) was Ysslansh's holy symbol (an obex) - My advice is replace it with an EEE symbol - the obex clues your players in too early (in chapter 1!) that Big T is involved - it's too easy. Take this clue out if they haven't met Ysslansh already, is my advice.

Good luck!

Re: questions, questions, questions....(quick answers needed

1) Master Dunrat has a chest in the millhouse in Hommlet that contains a note which leads the PCs to Rastor.

2) Once in Rastor the ancient crater of Mount Stalagos lies only 6 miles to the southwest of town. I have always described the extinct volcano looming over the town, clearing visible on the southern horizon. Other mountains nearby likely all have tall peaks but Mount Stalagos has been chopped down by its ancient eruption. You can't miss it and is likely a ominous landmark for the locals. The module states that many of Rastor's residents know about ochre robed cultists come down from the nearby passes and can point out just how to get there ... but most advice not expore it because of Mount Stalagos' haunted and cursed history. Its like an old abandoned haunted mansion on a hill overlooking a town ... mysterious and deadly.

3) The best way is to capture cultists and questioning them. The hard way is to fight their way through the CRM and look out the various overlooks into the crater (bridges and ledges that look inward across Lake Stalagos towards the inner crater).

4) They could and might. They don't have to defeat the Inner Fane but then again they'd be leaving loose ends dangling and the possibility of reinforcements showing up at the most inconvient time. If they leave the Inner Fane untouched and defeat the cultists at the Recovered Temple (and Node) there are likely other plans in the works (Unariq clones are one) that they should feel compelled to return and complete the destruction of the doomdreamers.

Most of these answer can be found in the book, but my description of Mount Stalagos as seen from Rastor is more my own campaign flavor ... others have kept the the volcano more hidden among the mountains near Rastor.

Good luck and have fun!

Thanks! Both of you! Just a shame that the last thing the PC's did was discovering the obex-symbol in the moathouse. Any suggestions on how to handle this? I liked the idea of not letting the PC's know that Big T. is involved....not yet :\ (BTW the cleric failed his religion check on the symbol)

Rudar,

The only way out of this is to:

1) Have the symbol stolen (and its pattern wiped from their minds) before they ask someone with more ranks in Knowledge (religion) advice.

2) Change every instance of a obex holy symbol beween Hommlet and the Fanes.

3) Alter Geynor's Journal to delete the many references to Tharizdun.

4) Delete the altar in the ghoul warrens beneath the Moathouse.

5) Delete the Obelisk chambers beneath the Moathouse.

As written it would take a very uninquisitive group of PCs to NOT figure out that Tharizdun is involved early on in this adventure. I know that when my players have burning questions that they seek all resources to find the answer ... asking mentors and sages or doing their own research in any available library (public and private). They are tenacious when they feel a question NEEDS to be answered.

Thanks Trithereon! I'll do my best to erase every trail that leads to Big T between Hommelt and the Fanes, but as you stated the players WILL do everything to discover what the obex is and what it represents.... :rolleyes

Rudar,

Any comments on the "EEE and the Big T" thread, which is basically addressing the same issue? Seems to me that you and I are trying to do the same thing here...

Cheers,

It's conceivable that Ysslansh could have found the symbol in the moathouse - have they discovered the journal yet?
You could work in a clue that they've found symbols of the ancient cult (nicely ambiguous) - give them just enough rope to hang themselves with their assupmtions.

Of course, if Ysslansh has no other unholy symbol and was clearly casting spells, they'll figure that's his own symbol.

Someone is sure to figure the obex out (Canoness Y'Dey or Yether the Keen, if the PCs can't make the link for themselves). Maybe this takes some correspondence and thus some time to research, even for Y'Dey. So Lareth may have time to lay some creepies down before any other definite link between the cults is proven.

In my game, the party discovered Tymerian in Rastor before going to the CRM, and roleplayed the encounter very well. I'd intended for Tymerian to be cold and avoid giving them any info, but their excellent RP caused her to open up (and actually start crying), and she told them what she knew. She sketched a bird's eye view of the ToAC, and warned them about the lightening towers. She doesn't know that the outer fane contains an inner fane, though -- she didn't get close enough to see it before getting shot down. She also told the party that the complex as a whole was called the ToAC, and it contained independant temples which seem to fight among themselves while at the same time working towards a common cause.

I described her as old and grizzled (and made the mistake of having another NPC in rastor refer to her as "Old Tymerian", completely unintentionally), and my favourite exchange from that conversation was when the question of her age came up, and she asked the party's rogue (super-bluff-guy) exactly how old he thought she was. He replies (with a bluff roll of something like 35) "Oh, you couldn't be a day over 30." Her reply: "You're entirely too kind, but the sad fact is, you're correct." That really freaked the party out about the powers of the ToAC.

msherman, that's a good twist on Tymerian. I like it.

Rudar, on page 33, the cultist Undra has a map that points out the ToAC.

Are there any good maps on this board (or anywhere else on the internet) for that map? Would be fun to have a hand-out of the map.

I made it myself, and never made a digital version. I seem to recall one lying around, but couldn't find it on Zans's site and I refuse to go back to Yahoo!.
