Starting at a higher level??
It's been a long while since I've posted here, since my hopes of ever running this module have been repeatedly dashed, but I now have a new group of gamers willing to go through with it.

My problem is this: I hate starting characters out at anything above first level. I have a trilogy of modules (Coin's End series; they're Kingdoms of Kalamar) I intend to start the PCs off with. The problem arises with the end level of the Coin series and the beginning level of RttToEE. RttToEE starts at level 4, but the Coin Series ends somewhere between 5-8th level. 5th level won't be a problem, but what to do if my PCs go after the moathouse at 8th level? I don't want to beef up the beginning of the module, because that causes a vicious spiral I'd rather avoid. If I leave everything as is, would 8th level PCs be overpowered throughout the module, or would it correct itself soon enough to not be a problem?

Congratulations on getting a group together to play the adventure!

Going through with the beef-it-up method myself, I can't tell you how long it will take before your party's high level evens out.

Have you considered a different pre-RttToEE adventure series? Andorax has posted a series of free adventures at his site (see the FAQ for details). Personally, I'd recommend the Freeport series of adventures. They would only require minor tweaking to adapt to a Tharizdunish plot, and IIRC they end right at level 3-4. Furthermore, Freeport could easily be a town on the Wild Coast, an area in Greyhawk that's pretty close to Verbobonc.

I'm not familiar with Coin's End, but I'm sure there's a number of superfluous encounters you could remove without seriously affecting the module. Take out any extra rooms that don't add anything, and reduce the number of bad guys and/or their levels. That way, instead of boosting RttToEE, you unboost (?) Coin's End.

My party came to Hommlet when they were about 6th level - we'd gone through the WotC sequence of the Sunless Citadel, the Forge of Fury and the Speaker in Dreams.

Utreshimon was a handful, but they overcame everything else in the Moathouse pretty easily. I don't think they thought of it that way, though, because the obelisk chamber and grells still made them very nervous. They did okay in Nulb, although they didn't really explore much of it (mainly dialogue and roleplay with Lareth), and breezed through the hobgoblins at the Temple ruins.

By the time they got to Rastor, they were about 8th level, with a new PC joining a bit more advanced than that. They chose the tougher South entrance, which (combined with Air Temple forces) was a decent fight for them. They got a fair way into the Fire Temple before beating a retreat and then going the other way around the CRM.

They blew through the orcs but had a tough fight against the Fire Bridge forces. They're now 9th level and having another go at the Fire Temple.

Looking ahead, I think they'll be much too strong for the single encounters along the way, but they're going to have to fight hard against the Temples and bridges - these forces are well organised, so there will be plenty of mooks to keep the party occupied while the leaders execute their more powerful spell combinations and tactics. My very rough guesstimate would be that they'll get through the rest of the CRM pretty well and then find the Outer Fane an appropriate challenge...

I've played (as a player, not DM) Coins End series and it's wonderful. Let them enjoy it! We had a team of 5 players and finished off at 6th level, but our DM was quite stingy with XPs awarded. I'd recommend playing Coins End if you can.

I'd also think of a way to make Daresh (the evil nemesis of Coins End) survive and recurr in the RTTToEE somewhere. If you could link these two campaigns you'd have an epic!

Cheers,
Blakey

I'd rather be defenestrating Chaos Mages.
