Interesting new approach to RttToEE
I just hit on an interesting idea last night.
Recently, in either Dungeon or Dragon (I think the latter) they had a fairly extensive article about a "modern day" Greyhawk (I'm misremembering which issue, btw...help here would be appreciated).
What would be the general opinion if someone were to try to set RttToEE in it's proper Greyhawk setting, but instead of being just a few years later, perhaps make it several CENTURIES? Playing out RttToEE with a mix of D20 Modern and D&D?

That would be cool. I haven't gotten a chance to even see D20 Modern yet, much less play it, but I've always liked the idea of incorporating modern stuff into the game.

Re: Interesting new approach to RttToEE
It does sound very cool, but I think the main problem is working out how to move the overall fantasy setting into modern times. Sure, d20 Modern has the rules to do it, but what does the world look like overall? Have the gnomes become the industrialists of the world? Are the gods still manifesting through their clerics? Is magic still widespread, or has it diminished in power? These and more questions have to be answered before you can even begin a conversion of the module, and it sounds enormously costly in terms of time and effort required...

Re: Interesting new approach to RttToEE
That is a cool idea... it would be a lot of work. I toyed with the idea of advancing a Dragonlance campaign into the Steam Age, but I didn't get too far before I determined that player interest in the group wasn't high enough to support the amount of work it would have taken.
Depending on the specific time period/tech level you want, there are lots of potential resources:
Shadowrun: near-future (cyberpunk) fantasy.
GURPS Cthulhu-punk: similar, but darker.
Castle Falkenstein: Steam Age fantasy.
GURPS Technomancer: Modern fantasy.
White Wolf's Mage or Changeling: Modern, conspiracy driven fantasy.
The Difference Engine, by Bill Gibson and Bruce Sterling: a novel set in an alternate historical Steam Age. No magic here, but lots of interesting background and flavor material.
GURPS Steampunk: based on/inspired by the Difference Engine, a setting that applies Cyberpunk ideology and sensibility to hyper-evolved steam-age technology.

Re: Interesting new approach to RttToEE
Finally found it.
Dragon 277. Greyhawk 2000 "setting".
The notes are less extensive than I recalled...mostly just conceptual material. However, it looks like it still may well be doable. It certainly would put a different "feel" to the setup.
As a quick, simple version of it, one could probably do a passable job by simply applying D&D rules and D20 Modern equipment, with some selective use of feats. A more complex version would require a more convoluted blending of the two.

Why am I getting these images of the modern CRM being a giant particle accelerator facility? With a radio telescope in the middle?
Apply some quantum physics as a theme and we may be on to something here...
Is the ancient demi-god imprisoned in the box alive or dead? Well, until you look inside, he's both alive AND dead.
And remember, you can observe Lareth's location or his state of mind, but not the two of them simultaneously.
