Chat's ghost
Zane, my party's scout, killed Chatrilion in the Moathouse after a failed backstab. After he was dead, Zane proceded to leave two of his daggers in Chat's eyes and kick his corpse every time the party walked by it. He REALLY didn't like Chat.

Now, for added emotional effect and fun, I'm thinking of replacing Wat with the ghost of Chatrilion. After all, the obelisk is raising ghouls all the time...why not a ghost? But would Chat be tied to the moathouse then? I'd like to have him be able to strike the party while they're in Nulb, the ToEE with the hobgoblins or perhaps the CRM...but I don't want him showing up for every single fight?

Also, I could write a great cutscene of Calmer, Xaod, Spugs and some others investigating the parties findings in the moathouse and someone getting posessed (malevolence) just long enough to whisper "Zane...">:

Thoughts?

Re: Chat's ghost
I wouldn't replace Wat with him. That would be kind of a strange place for him to show up. I think he would haunt the Moathouse.

But...you could make him a wandering ghost, bent on getting revenge on his killer. You could have the ghost stalk them. He could show up in camp one night and the person on watch could see the ghost appear above the killer's body with a knife raised. You could give the ghost one more round to study his prey. That would give the guy on watch time to react.

My concern with not replacing Wat would be that A) it seems like I'm boosting and B) I feel that two ghostly assassins would be overkill. But I agree the tavern would be a weird location. I would think either during a watch or during a combat.

BTW, IMO he's not out to kill the party...just Zane.

Re: Chat's ghost
I would not do anything. The PC hated Chat a lot, which means you did your job. Chat was killed and the PC achieved satisfaction. Do not ruin that by cheating the PC of the kill, so to speak. Let this one slide. If you "revive" Chat you will lesson the effect of reviving Lareth or future, more important bad guys in the CRM or Outer Fane.

I think just having his name Zane repeated in hushed whispers throughout the moathouse would be sufficient. They would get properly spooked and not want to venture in there. Of course, no ghost should be present, but the players don't actually have to know that. At this point, you still have many NPC's to get the party involved with so don't begrudge the loss of only one. Think about ways to evoke similar strong feelings with the rest.

By the way, wasn't your name JRGiant?

I have to say, I agree with Infiniti. You don't want to have too many recurring villians. Let it go. Save the good idea for another game.

Re: No ghost, but a ghoul or ghast would be nice
Agreed with most that a ghost is an overkill. But I think his body would make a memorable ghoul or ghast - especially if it still had something of a voice that gurgled "Zaaaaane..." as it shambled about. Not a difficult encounter, but an atmospheric one that makes the Moathouse even MORE creepy (as well as emphasising the influence of the obelisk on the whole complex...)

Okay...thanks for your input. I wasn't really begrudging Chat's loss...more looking for a way to keep the players involved. In the WoT campaign we've been in, a recurring arch-enemy for my armsman was a great pull. I always looked forward to seeing what Lord Luan would do to me next.:evil

If I'm not going to bring Chat back, I'm going to avoid the cutscene. I don't want to encourage the party to return to the moathouse. Plus, I'd like to find a way to shift the spotlight onto a different character, as Zane gets plenty of "camera time" so to speak, and I don't want anyone left out.
