Advanced/Awakened Kiibo
Since Kiibo already violates the HD limit on Tarren, I thought it would be fun to advance him. Also, imagine Tarren got his hands on a scroll of awaken and successfully cast it. The following is an advanced, awakened Kiibo to 16HD (double Tarren's HD). This might even be acceptable assuming that Tarren is in his "home".

Warning: This is a very powerful boost - use it at your own risk.

Kiibo
Large Magical Beast; Advanced and Awakened Dire Bear; CR 9; HD 16d10+64 (152 hp); Init +1; Spd 40; AC 17 (-1 size, +1 Dex, +7 natural; touch 10, flat-footed 16); Atk +25 melee (2d4+10/19-20x2, 2 claws) and +20 melee (2d8+5, bite); SA Improved grab; Grapple +30; Face/Reach 5x10/5; AL N; SV Fort +14, Ref +11, Will +6; Str 31, Dex 13, Con 19, Int 14, Wis 12, Cha 12.

SQ: Scent, lowlight vision, darkvision 60ft, speaks common.

Skills: Listen +11, Sense Motive +5, Spot +11, Swim +13.

Feats: Improved Critical (claw).

Improved Grab (Ex): To use this ability, the dire bear must hit with a claw attack.

Re: Advanced/Awakened Kiibo
Just think, one more HD would advance him a size category. Note that this has the errata'd face for dire bears (5x10 and not 10x20). I thought about either improved critical or power attack (huge BAB and +25 to hit would be uglier for the PC's IMO) and then decided on the improved critical -> power critical option for when Kiibo gets to 20HD.

Just some fun with splatbooks! :D

Heeheehee! I think this is great! It won't unbalance the battle with the Fire Temple forces nearby, and may tell the party that Tarren is not to be messed with, giving them the opportunity to interact and roleplay with the crazed, cannibalistic druid... :)

Ummm...double HD??
I may be wrong, but I beleive the double HD is only for first level...after that, its no higher than the druids level in HD...So he should be 8 HD...am I wrong?

Re: Ummm...double HD??
An adventuring druid can only have up to his level in HD for animal companion(s). A "stay at home" druid can have up to double his HD in animal companion(s). This restriction can only be violated when the druid is 1st level or when the druid awakens one of his animal companions. Normally, I would have assumed Tarren to be adventuring, but I suppose he has his fungus grove and could be considered "stay at home." In the first case, a 12HD dire bear violates the limit, so assuming the second case is valid. Therefore, his limit is 16HD.

Animal HD
The adventure was written long before the rule about only having you level worth of animal HD which might explain the violation of that rule. My groups doesn't play with that rule either so I did something similar with Tarren's animal. I gave him 2 dire lions that I advanced and then awakened (I also boosted Tarren's level).
Hopefully this will discourage them from just trying to kill him and might allow for some role playing. (though they have taken on the Polymoph into something powerful and kill everything role)

Re: Animal HD
That rule is in the PH, so unless the module was written before the PH, not likely. Anyway, Monte wrote both so he had access to the preliminary PH, if anything. :)

hmmm
I don't remember it being in my player's handbook. Its the first printing which has some differences than in the second. I do know the whole animal companion thing is fleshed out in Masters of the wild and I thougth thats where the rule came from.
And I've heard that the writing for RtToEEE was started before all the rules where put together so its highly possible that things had changed after the module was written.

Re: hmmm
I believe that the PH says something to the effect that a 'non-adventuring' or 'in his grove' a Druid has 2hd per level of Animal Companions. It then goes on to say that a Druid that moves around alot has less. I don't believe that it spells out exactly how much less.
