Help needed - urgent
Tomorrow is our next session, party is about to enter the moathouse dungeon... in reading the book again, I have suddenly realized that I dont understand what their next hook is. The only potential clue they can find in the dungeon is the journal which links to Chatrilon. Am I wrong?

While they didnt trust Chat enough to take him with them, I have no idea how to use him effectively once they come back to find him, not to say anything about the possibility of them killing him outright. They have not met Dunrat yet, and have no clue about the cult in Hommlet.

My questions:

- How to link to the cult in Hommlet effectively?
- How to make them go to the temple ruins after they are done in Hommlet? I see this as necessary for beefing them up before the CRM.

This is a little urgent as the game is in less than 24 hours. Help will be greatly appreciated. I apologize if the answers are buried somewhere in the forum, but I couldnt find them.

- How to link to the cult in Hommlet effectively?

The journal makes it clear that there are additional cultists in Hommlet. It is up to your players to investigate the hidden cultists. If they are having a hard time of it then have the body of the murdered miller and his wife be discovered. If this isn't a clue-bat to the head then I don't know what is! Once they have defeated Dunrat his letter will point them towards Rastor.

I'd advice against purposefully making them follow a false lead. Your players may be confused by any strong-arm tactics to get them to clear out the old temple where there is nothing obvious cult-related happenings. They may think they are missing something and become confused. Dunrat's letter will lead them to Rastor, not the ruined temple. If you need to "beef" them up then concentrate on "random" encounters on the LONG road to Rastor and then get them embroiled quickly into the Tanbrosh problem of Rastor ... between generous and challenging random encounters and the Rastor addicts they should get the XP you want them to have.

Thank you Trithereon.

A couple of clarification questions:

- Isnt the party supposed to visit Nulb and the ruins before going to Rastor? I thought that's how the module was designed.
- If not, then when? Neither place poses any challenge once the CRM is finished... or am I confused again?

"Isnt the party supposed to visit Nulb and the ruins before going to Rastor? I thought that's how the module was designed."

There should be nothing that forces the party to engage in superfluous encounters, essentially what Nulb and the ruined temple are. Neither does anything to promote the storyline so you should feel like you need to include hooks to force them to investigate those areas, unless, for instance, you need them to gain some more experience before tackling the CRM. Sure, it might be fun to have them confront Lareth only to meet him again later, but this has no real story purpose. However, don't discourage them from going either. e.g. Elmo could shrug his shoulders and say, "Who knows. Maybe you'll find a clue in the temple or even in Nulb, but be careful, I hear stories of walking undead in Nulb."

"If not, then when? Neither place poses any challenge once the CRM is finished... or am I confused again?"

By the time the players ever go back, it should be after the Outer Fane, either before or after the Inner Fane. Nulb will contain meaningless encounters and Lareth will already be the Champion and be located in the recovered temple. The temple itself might be cleared of the hobgoblin riffraff, or not, your choice, but I certainly wouldn't bother with the fight unless you think the group needs an easy fight to bolster their spirits.

Many thanks, gentlemen. This board is the best feature of the module! :-)

I never even realized Nulb and the ruins werent "meant" to be played before Rastor... this does alleviate one problem, which is the length of the module. I figured those two places would take anywhere between four and eight sessions, and when we only play once every two weeks...

So Ill leave it at that. They have some info about Nulb and the ruins already - they heard some stuff at the inn (almost chose to go to the ruins before the moathouse in fact). If they still remember and want to go there, so be it. If not, at least I will feel comfortable that they arent missing anything crucial.

Did I say thank you already?

Btw, do you think that a six character party at level 5 will be enough to hit the western entrance? I know the module says so, but that western entrance complex looks quite intimidating even for this size party, at least to me. That howler, in particular, can be devastating in addition to all the other forces... especially as it looks like they should be played cleverly.

I hope this gets to you in time. If you're worried about hooks to get them to deal with the dudes in Hommlet, don't worry. If they don't bite on the clues, have Dunrat and Chat try to kill the PCs. When the PCs return to Hommlett, they will probably be talking about their exploits in the Moathouse. There are spies everywhere in Hommlet. Word would get to Chat and Dunrat. Don't forget Chat is an assassin.

This would be interesting, I tried but failed to do it -

Have the baddies separate one person from the group. Try to assassinate him. Then have the doppleganger infiltrate the group. If it fails, it will at least get the PCs attention. If it succeeds, then hoorah for the bad guys!
