Long lost decendant of Yan-C-Bin in the Earth Temple?
**** SPOILER WARNING for 'Thicker Than Water' ****

My party may be headed for the earth temple next session. (They're paused at the main gate now, and no matter how many times I ask them, they won't tell me if they plan to head north or south. >: )

One of the characters in my party is a long-lost decendant of Yan-C-Bin (I'm running Monte Cook's 'Thicker Than Water' from the WoTC website along with RTTTOEE). He doesn't have as much Air Elemental blood in him as an Air Genasi would, but he does have enough to have manifested some traits -- he's already taken one of the feats available to him due to his bloodline (the levitation feat). He's not really aware of how or why he has this ability yet, though.

So, it occured to me that he might be vulnerable to the Earth Temple Priests' turning ability. This might be a fun ability to use against him, and would also be a clue for him as to where these abilities he has are coming from.

Is there any way the Earth Temple clerics would clue in to try Turning him? I can't find any appropriate divination/detection spell that would serve that purpose. Might they guess to try turning him if they see him levitate?

you could make it so that when he's under stress (in combat or something similar) his hair will act (it'll seem to float) like he's in a light storm... without there being any wind

that way if he's in the temple and he enters combat, the effect will show and a smart cleric who beats a spot check (dc 15 or 20) will notice the strange act and might put two and two together that he's some kind of air creature

just an idea...

Do it!
He might also feel somewhat uncomfortable in the Earth Temple, after all he is in an (un)holy place of an element that is opposite to him. That might help some clever cleric discovering that he has elemental air in his heritage.

Besides that, I encourage you to use the turning power of the clerics against him. That will really surprise your players and I guess it will be great fun!

You may have already though of this but any elementals brought into areas in and around the temple of elemental evil have a % rate of turning evil. Now granted it wouldn't be fun to force the character to be evil (thats part of the reason why I restricted genasi from PC races) but you might have fun with having him or her hear whispers of evil urgings or nightmares if he sleeps in the temple area.
Also remember if he has a chance of being turned by the Earth temple he also has a chance of being controled by the Air temple. (since he is not a full Ganasi I would maybe give the checks a penalty or him turn resistance)

Tribal28, we've had that debate before...it's a crying shame you chose to ban an option from the PCs.

The % chance of turning evil isn't an arbitrary figure...it's not a mathematical analysis. It's representative of how powerful the "evil urge" that would wash over a given Elemental is, and how likely it is that that Elemental will succumb to it.

Same reason you don't use Intimidate on a PC. The skill represents your ability to influence a given NPC. PCs are always, all about choices.

I would say that there's exactly 0% chance of a PC part-elemental being turning evil just because of a die roll.

On the other hand, I STRONGLY encourage whispers of evil, urging the PC through notes and aside comments to give in to the dark suggestions, and to notch this up considerably in the darker areas (recovered temple and especially the Node).

If it comes up again, I'll toss this in as well...Elemental familiars. Elemental Familiars are not immune to this effect, but will not turn against their masters, no matter what. They will simply suffer a change of personality towards evil, and will relate to their according masters appropriately.

Familiars have personalities and behaviors of their own...treat them accordingly.

Quote:

"Please master...let me burn them. Perhaps just a little? No? Oh, but I want to...I want to burn their soft, weak flesh."

Left unattended, the familiar will act on it's evil urgings, but won't turn against the party or do anything untoward like that.

Just a bit of info...or maybe I've just been feeling a bit defesive lately :-)
Ok as for not allowing Genasi or certain other types of PC's...One reason was the chance of turning evil in the book (I started the campaing before I found these boards) and I wanted to run a game as RAW as possible. At the time we started Genasi and such were NOT viable options for PC's in Greyhawk. At the time I wanted to run a stripped down game based on the 2 core books. Things have changed a bit since we started but I still see no problem with those limits.
Personally I also have a bit of an issue with PC's playing minotaurs and solars before they have even tried to play a human or dwarf. Its a personal preferance. If thats how you like to play then great but don't fault me for not playing that way.

Re: explanation
Heh. Yeah, I have no intention of making the PC turn evil, but I do plan to whisper things to him. He's already on the risky side of CN, so it'll be interesting to see how he reacts.

One idea I came up with after my posting yesterday was Miikolak's Earth Elemental. I've always envisioned that elemental as a puppy-dog type companion for Miikolak, so it would be very fitting for the Elemental to start growling at the PC when he comes into site, and act generally hostile towards him -- while the clerics can't sense his air blood, and he doesn't even know about it himself, the earth elemental can smell it, and it smells rotten. Once the fight breaks out, that'd probably clue Miikolak in to try turning him.

Re: explanation
Didn't mean it as an attack...sorry if it came across that way. I just wanted to re-mention something that had been debated well in the past. Perhaps it might even make an appropriate FAQ comment (what to do with part-elemental PCs or Elemental Familiars).

I have nothing but the utmost respect for a DM who wants to restrict the stranger options in their own campaign. It wasn't the restriction that I objected to...it was the reason presented.
