... of this 200 page PC killing dissertation. ;)

Hey, all. I'll definately be sticking around here and prodding everyone with questions about this giant campaign. Just bought RttToEE and I've read through it once, reread through Hommlet twice, and am trying to wrap my mind around this thing. It's big! :eek

But, I've got until August when I'm back at college to prepare for it. A looong time by most standards, so I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how I could spend the time I have to prepare because I'd hate to end up preparing for something trivial. Because I do that a lot.

So far, I've bought a binder and some dividers (labeled: NPCs, Places, Plot, and Notes). And I've started listing some of the NPCs in Hommlet simply because there are so many. I'll probably take some of the more likely to fight NPCs and copy them onto their own sheets for easy reference as well. Unfortunately, I won't know what the PCs are going to be until I'm back at college so its a bit of a bummer that I won't be able to work plot hooks in until the last minute.

I've been reading through the BoB thread and other stuff, and it's all great, I never would have thought of most of it! I'm also going to brush up on my Greyhawk. But, thoughts what might be an interesting part of the game to expand upon or work at given my time would be great. I really don't know what to do with it all.

Rastor. It is clearly the most underdeveloped area of the module, and pretty much left to the DM. Hommlet is well-developed (especially if you have the original module), and the PC's don't need to actually adventure in Verbobonc, so Rastor needs the most work, especially if the PC's "camp" there while exploring the CRM.

Read all the logs. You never know what little gems are in there that you can use later. You probably don't want to write them down, but when similar situations arise in your game, you'll be better prepared. e.g. in the recovered temple, have the elder earth elemental grapple and pin a PC while a stone giant pummels him to death (courtesy of Andorax). Even more importantly, it will help greatly with flavor, something that all players enjoy.

In addition to Infiniti's advice...get organized. Flipping to the appendix for NPC stats and the MM for monster stats constantly is a pain in the butt. Use whatever system works for you - I put all my potential encounters on Excel documents with monster stats and an initiative chart, which speeds up combat greatly.

Read the errata on this board and mark it in your book.

Decide ahead of time whether you want Tharzidan to be revealed early or not. If not, change or remove Yssalanish's holy symbol.

Understand how Ultreshimon's hover ability works before the first session.

Bookmark this message board!!!!!!! It has been a HUGE source of help and inspiration to me.

I already started a thread and figured out that Hover thing on the Rules board, and I've got it down. :) I'm not sure exactly how they could beat a well played Young blue dragon, but we'll see how it goes, PCs tend to surprise me.

Good point about Rastor, there's a lot of potential there that wasn't expanded on, most likely because of space limitations.

The logs are great, I've been enjoying them immensely. I keep thinking "Wow, I never would have thought of that."

Another suggestion...since you're not starting until August, you may be one of the first DMs to benefit fully from our anticipated 3.5 conversion. As soon as the books hit the shelves (and our doorsteps), several of us are going to try to retool RttToEE to be fully compatable with the new 3.5 edition. If we get it done in short order (or at least the first chapter or two), you could potentially be running it under the new rules.

"Whadda ya mean, Orcs get levels too?!?"

Re: RE: Proud new owner
That has had me a bit worried. The people who I know will be playing are very much looking forward to the new rules and I've already had someone tell me he might play a gnome bard! Learning the new rules shouldn't be a problem by then, but the question remains whether to go with the monsters in 3.0 (which might prove too weak?) or switch to 3.5 (which would definately require modifications!), plus all the NPCs that will need very much modification, etc.

I'll be a glad playtester of any changes/fixes for 3.5 compatability. :)

I would also recomend you hit ZansForCans file archive at

zans.clanplaid.net

You'll find a whole slough of useful junk in there.

Ah, I remember those evenings, lingering over brandy at "Eat" . . .

One thing you will have going for you is that aside from the appendix, all the RttToEE monsters are straight from the MM. The conversions will be done automatically for you :)

The NPCs, probably especially the monster ones, will be the bulk of the work. Levels are still balanced with HD (one hopes) though so even if the details change, the balancing shouldn't. Off the top of my head DR and the way feats are going to work are the major global changes that will affect all monsters and monsterous NPCs. Adding or subtracting a feat or so shouldn't affect encounters that much.
