Error? Experts please help with domains?
Ysslansh, in the Moathouse, is listed as having the domains Chaos and Evil, which really confuses me because when I flip to the back I see the following for EEE domains:

Chaos, Evil, Madness, and one of the following: Fire, Earth, Air, or Water.

To me this says (Chaos or Evil or Madness) and (Fire or Earth or Air or Water). Am I missing something?

I'm going to swap out the Chaos domain for the Water domain, so as to better match Festrath and explain why he's now in charge, plus I recall the Water temple being full of troggies.

I wouldn't change it....
Well, the way I see it is....

Any combination of (Chaos, Evil, Madness) and only one of the following: Fire, Earth, Air, or Water.

Tharizdun and the EEE are all about Chaos, Evil, and Madness. These are the central domains. Then there is the 4 separate factions within the EEE of earth, fire, water, and Air. These obviously are never combined. These are opposing factions.

As for Ysslansh, I would leave it alone. but if you must change it, it is ithe Earth temple that is full of troglodytes. It wouldn't hurt to replace chaos or evil with earth.

Hope it helps...

I thought this was in the Errata, but I guess not! His deity should be Tharizdun, not the EEE, as he is listed in the book. His domains (as you point out) are more consistent as is his holy symbol (the obex) and robes (black, not ochre). Note that Chenashi (in Hommlet) has a bit of this problem too (but that's in the errata already).

However, some have chosen to make him an EEE cleric (and Dunrat and Chen as well) to avoid a too early tip-off toward another force in play (big T). In this case, you would have to change his domains, but trogs are in the Earth Temple area, not water (K-T's in there).

Siob, can you tweak the errata (p 24, M32A) to list the deity change? Maybe something like:

"Finally, his deity should probably be changed to Tharizdun to reflect his domains and his symbol. If you prefer to leave him EEE, change Chaos to Earth and change his symbol."

This would mean that all EEE clerics have to have one elemental domain. I don't think this is the case - I think it's meant to say that they can only choose one elemental domain at most. For example, they can't have both Fire and Earth domains; but they could have Chaos and Evil.

I'd interpret the description of available domains as really meaning:
"... must choose their domains from the following list:
1. Chaos
2. Evil
3. Madness
4. Fire or Water or Earth or Air"

I think this might be what Bogon is saying as well, but I'm not certain (my apologies, Bogon). Also, I agree that troglodytes are much more directly allied with Earth than Water - if you were to change it, Ysslansh would be a very unusual trog... maybe he's an outcast from his people and turned to the complete opposite seeking vengeance and could rant about it a bit...

That is how I interpreted it (which you can probably tell above) since every other EEE Cleric I could find with a quick scan through the appendix does have one domain in the elements. There are only two that don't: Ysslansh and Chenashi. Both have problems with the deity/domain pairings, though and need fix-ups.

Since every one of them probably has pledged to a specific elemental temple, I don't see too much problem requiring this, although the text isn't 100% clear about it. Certainly, the comment that "[their dress may reveal the element] ... they revere over the others, if any." in the description of the EEE clerics in Appendix 2 leaves the door open. But I would expect that they would have used "or" instead of "and" in the domain listing if that wasn't the intention.

Re: Error? Experts please help with domains?
I'm glad to see I wasn't the only one who read the line in this way. :)

My group didn't make it to 32 tonight, so I have some time to ponder. I like the idea of Yss being from the water Temple simply because that plays better in my head for why he is the current leader and additional reason for him to have chosen to pick on Gren (I'm using the vile material from BoB), but I had mis-remembered what race was with the Water temple. Making him earth-aligned, however, gives Gaynor even more reason to dislike him (Air&Earth being opposites). CHoices, choices...

Thanks for the input, guys. :)

I see it the same as Caedrel.

They're trying to make clear that an EEE cleric can ONLY choose the domain which matches the element they are associated with....Earth EEE priests ONLY have "Earth" on their list.

In no way does this say they *have* to choose Earth.

It's a shorter way of saying:

Earth priests of the EEE may choose from:
Chaos, Evil, Madness, Earth
Water priests of the EEE may choose from:
Chaos, Evil, Madness, Water

etc.

"Whadda ya mean, Orcs get levels too?!?"
