Forgotten Realms Campaign Log
Here is my attempt to trace the events in the campaign I am running. I hope it is as enjoyable as the others on this message board are. I am several weeks into the game, so the first few will be catch up and might not have the detail some of the more recent sessions will. Also, I am new to DMing, so if you see technical errors, don't be too hard on me.

A few little things: 1. house rule on ECLs - IMC a character can trim the innate abilities to lower the ECL on some races. For instance, there is a drow in my party who has cut her spell resistance and a few other things in order to have an ECL 1. 2. My game is set in the Forgotten Realms. Hommlet is in Deepingdale, 30 miles west of Highmoon (Verbobonc). Rastor is nortwest nestled in to the Thunder Peaks.

There have been additions to the party and a few deaths and early retirements, but without further ado...the original cast.
Kierna Ilanna - 3psi, 1ecl drow very well disguised as a high elf
Thaden - 4wiz w/ Mir (his loggerhead shrike-bird-familiar)
Sal - 4rog halfling
Durnin of Veroni - 4cle of natural forces (no god; worshipping nature)
Broderick - 4ftr human
Leopold Hansbrick - 4pal aasimar - follows Helm

Sessions to follow

Re: Forgotten Realms Campaign Log
Durnin, nature's cleric, is from Hommlet. He lives there and know the basic history of the town and some of the people. The rest of the group are passing through and visiting, except for Kierna, the disguised drow. She has been sent there on a mission from her house, worshippers of Lolth, as a spy to poke around a tToEE.

Kierna recruits the party at the Welcome Wench. After hearing rumors of the moat house, they decided to check it out first. They also pick up a pushy NPC to accompany them: Chatrilon Unosh. They set out the next morning, sunny summer day, 2 Flamerule 1372 DR, the Year of Wild Magic.

On the way to the moathouse, the party runs into Ol' Del checking his traps. He informs them that a blue dragon has settled in the woods in the past few days. After some more hiking, Sal way out in front scouting, followed by the spear-weilding Broderick Von Jovee. Below Brod's feet, the groud erupts, and an ankheg tore into him, ripping at his ribs with his pincers. The group made short work of the ankheg, but it was a good encounter to warm them up.

Unfortunately, my fight with the dragon was a little anti-climactic. The party filed into the moathouse courtyard. I gave them a good scare initially when the dragon charged out and hovered, blinding most of the party except for Thaden, the wizard and Kierna the psion, both of whom were still on the other side of the wall. Kierna levitated to the top of the wall and summoned an ecto bat to harrass the dragon. Thaden slung a web at the dragon, which failed it's saving throw. Even a dragon can be webbed. The group begins pelting the ensnared beast with arrows, while Broderick stabbed it with his 10' reach spear, doing some good damage. The dragon knew it was in trouble and needed to escape. Breathing could have only hit one or two of its attackers, so Utreshimon tried to break the web and fly. I rolled very low, and could not break the web despite the strength of the dragon. A few rounds later, just before he could breath in desparation, Ultreshimon fell.

The party searched the area and found the bodies, but none of the hidden items in this area. Thus ended our first session of RttToEE and the first time I have run a battle with a dragon. I promise my next dragon battle will be more interesting.

Re: Forgotten Realms Campaign Log
Concerning the web spell, you do realize that to function it requires support posts? To be honest, I don't remember exactly how big the courtyard is, so the walls might have been close enough to support the web spell. Anyway, on retrospect it would have been better if the dragon would have breathed on individual PCs. After all, arrows are no threat because the web gives some cover, increasing an already relatively high AC and more then likely the guy with the longspear did the most damage. In any event, there are more then enough other dragons in this adventure to teach your PCs some lessons in respect ;)

Re: Forgotten Realms Campaign Log
I didn't know web required support. It wouldn't stick him to the ground or wrap around individuals? I also never heard of it providing extra AC. I'll have to look at web more closely. Thanks for bringing it up. I wish I had breathed in hindsight, but I though it would have been easy to break the web. The DCs not that hard for a dragon of any size, but I rolled terribly. Then it was too late. Yes, there will be more dragons to do better with.

Re: Into the moathouse...
Today was tricky. I introduced a new character into the game, which turned into an interesting experience. The new player is the 14-year-old brother of aasimar paladin's player. This new guy has blossomed into an excellent D&D player. The cast again.
Kierna - drow 3psi
Thadan - human 4wiz
Durnin - half-orc 4clr
Sal - halfling 4rog
Leopold - aasimar 3pal
Broderick - human 4ftr
Nym - elf 4nec

Well, I introduce Nym gently as someone poking around the moathouse, looking for adventure. He heard the battle with the dragon and came to get a closer look. First hew casted invisibility on himself. The he snuck up on the group. Then he started pilfering the bags on thier mule! At this point the group heard him and Sal's dog, Mutt, smelled him. To make a long and hair-pulling story short, they found him and poured doused him with the dragon's blood they had bottled, which made him visible. Nym ended up on the ground, and Chatrilon gave him a second smile.

At this point they decided to go into the dungeon. It was also the point where Chat started studying his victim. He wasn't going to let them get far down there. They started moving down the stairs. Broderick and Leo were in the front, Sal and Durnin were in the middle, and Thaden and Kierna were next. Last but not least, Chat insisted in guarding the rear. Below the stairs off to the sides, the gnolls were waiting in ambush, as they heard the noisy adventurers above. Right before they reached the bottom, Chat struck. Thaden made his save, but the damage was enough to put him on the ground bleeding. Roll initiative. Chat moved quickest and dropped the flat-footed psionic, Kierna, with sneak attack damage. She was bleeding too. Durnin and Sal made quick work of Chat while the gnolls attacked the the party's tanks. The fight was over quickly.

Well, Chat had the group paranoid. They healed Thaden and Kierna and found Spugnoir. They didn't trust him at all. They tried to tie him up, but he wasn't having any of that. Being a good hearted fellow, Spugnoir understood the characters' attitudes and simply told them he was leaving. Thaden, wasn't prepared to let him leave, so he, Broderick and Kierna followed him out. They tried to charm him, but he made his saves. Spugnoir decided to yell at them rather than taking his anger out with spells. Then he walked back to Hommlet.

Meanwhile, the curious Sal decided to explore further, without his party. Luckily his two friends Durnin and Leopold followed him down the hallway. Sal was jumped by the ghast at the end of the hallway. The ghast paralyzed Leo and Sal, but Durnin chopped it up with his battle axe. Thus ending another session.

"Today was tricky."
We call this "growing pains." :) The important thing is that you have fun, which sounds like you are having fun. Don't worry, but the end of this adventure you will be an experienced DM and your players will be experienced adventurers. Just try not to hold back too much or they will never learn. Good luck!

You are welcome ;) Web is a particular tricky spell and while at first glance it appears to be quite powerful, there are some limitations to it. Anyway, always make sure you know at the very least the spells your players have access to as to prevent possible problem areas. For example, a PC has learned Firebrand, a spell from MoF, which basically is a more versatile fireball (you should several small fireballs). I will have to discuss with him, how we are going to treat large monsters being hit by multiple spheres. I am inclined not to let the damage stack, though the monster will need to make one or more saves instead of the usual one save.

More moathouse madness
Updated cast:
Leopold - 3pal aasimar
Sal - 4rog halfling
Kierna - 3psi drow (disguised as high elf)
Thaden - 4wiz human
Durnin - 4clr of nature's forces - half orc
Broderick - 4ftr human
Jezz - 4nec - elf (let's try this one again)

Well, the new guy liked his character, so he made the same dude and renamed him. We decided to try again. This time he didn't go through the packs, and the group welcomed him warmly. So they regrouped and got ready to explore.

They went down to the torture chamber. They were accosted by the 3 ghouls, but the Durnin splintered them with positive energy. They found the secret in the column, but left it until they explored the other door.

Of course, Gren heard the battle with the gnoll guards so she, her gnolls and the skeletons were in positions prepared for anyone to open that door.

Sal went first into the room, and he opened the door. As soon as the door opened, the gnolls fired their shortbows using the door & the pillars for cover. This was a long and arduous battle. The empty room was a no-mans-land. Leopold moved into the room, while Sal exited stage left. As Leo entered, so did the skeleton charge. Leo tried to turn them and failed. Here's the funny part. Gren casted random action on Leo. Despite his beefy will save, he failed. Next round on his action, Leo smashed himself in the head with his maul for 14 damage. That was the worst damage the group took in the fight. Next time Leo turned the skeletons, which allowed the party to advance into the room with Gren. Kiern summoned an ecto-badger, which kept Gren occupied, while the fighters cleaned up the gnolls and skeletons. The mages used their magic missiles and fire orbs to kill Gren. Two of the skeletons wandered down the hallway, escaping.

As the party looted bodies and checked out the items on the blanket, they heard a loud clanging noise down the hallway beyond. (I forgot the hallway was blocked by a secret door. Oh well!) That noise was the portcullis hitting the floor as the skeletons alerted the gnolls beyond.

The group investigated the noise and tried to lift the gate. It was too heavy for them to lift, so they decided to take the secret in the pillar in the torture chamber.

Curious Sal went in first, leaving the rest of the group up top. He was only supposed to go down and see what was below and report back. Well he didn't. He climbed down, went through the passage and found the entrance to the crypt. He went into the crypt alone. When the ghouls opened the tomb lids, he scrambled back to the tunnel. He chanced a look behind him, and I scared him with the description of a hideous ghoul squatting in the tunnel entrance, and I made the appropriate face at him. He called for the paladin and the clerics. Long story short. They came down and easily turned and slaughtered the cowering ghouls. They found the entrance to the ghould-dug passages. And that's where we stopped. So that's where I'll stop. I'll save the rest for the next post.

On to the pit...
Cast still the same but not for long -
Leopold - 3pal aasimar
Sal - 4rog halfling w/ Mutt who is with the mule up top
Kierna - 3psi drow (disguised as high elf)
Thaden - 4wiz human
Durnin - 4clr of nature's forces - half orc
Broderick - 4ftr human
Jezz - 4nec - elf w/ toad familiar

The party left the winding ghould tunnel with a turned ghoul that wandered into it. They decided to explore the rest of the man-made tunnels first. They cam to a 'T' intersection, with stairs leading down to the right and a long tunnel to the left. Unbeknownst to the party a ghast was hiding on the stairs. When Sal entered the intersection, the ghast attacked and missed with its claws and bite. Seven characters against one ghast is not much of a battle, especially when the ghast goes last in the round. It did however make enough noise to warn (I don't have the module with me so pardon my spelling) Ysslanish and Gaynor Ton of their approach. The PCs went down the stairs and into the pit room, where Gaynor and Ysslanish were waiting. When the group swarms on its victims it is really ugly. Ysslanish managed to hold Leopold and affect Sal with his stench, but the Broderick and Durnin deal considerable damage and the mages have some good offensive spells as well.

They decided to explore the tunnel behind them before they moved into the pit, but I'll not bore you with how the party slew the gnoll group and made the gnoll ranger plea for his life. And how the group plundered the gnolls quarters and figured out the mechanism on the portcullis.

They found Gaynor Ton's journal, which enlightened them to the group in Hommlet, though they were more interested in poking fun at Ton's psychotic, evil rantings. After looking around at the artifacts in the room, they decided to descend into the pit. They were intrigued by the water spilling out of the side tunnel. They shined their bullseye lantern down it and saw it curve to some distance place beneath the dungeon floor. The continued their descent, and Broderick began to feel the ill effects of the unnatural chill. He became fatigued and shivvered. When they reached the obelisk they were surprised by the grell attacking from above.

Warning! Humorous events coming! 8o

The party is being attacked by the grell. Sal was afraid to fight on the precarious lift on which he was standing, so he leapt to the obelisk. The purple veins squirmed his way, so he TRIED to jump back. He rolled a 1. The long drop to the cold floor left him a grease spot.

Meanwhile the grell paralyzed Durnin and was about to take him to the ceiling to devour him, but Broderick landed the final blow. The grell dropped Durnin to the platform. The grell rocked it on his way to rest with Sal, but luckily the PCs made their reflex saves and stayed on the platform.

Before they had a chance to recover, a flying, insane cleric attacked from below. The fighters made quick work of him, and he joined the grell and Sal below.

Next, after seeing the obelisks' strange tentacles, Thaden came up with a briliant plan to avoid it altogether. He levitated and got a push over to the other platform. He lowered it. Then he and Kierna levitaded everyone to the bottom.

They explored and touched the portal. They had another fierce battle with a grell. This time Leo was the one being pulled towards the ceiling. It took Kierna's ecto-bat to finish off the grell. Leo took some damage from the fall, but he was okay. Thus ended another session. Next session, the group meets new party members and goes back to Hommlet.

Re: On to the pit...
The group is about to change. The player of Thaden was tiring of him, and together we came up with a plan to introduce a new character and retire Thaden. The player of Durnin was also tired of playing his character. Here we go...

Leopold - 3pal aasimar
Sal - deceased:|
Kierna - 3psi drow (disguised as high elf)
Thaden - 4wiz human
Durnin - 4clr of nature's forces - half orc
Broderick - 4ftr human
Jezz - 4nec - elf w/ python familiar

At the bottom of the Obelisk, the party gathered around the portal. Thaden figured out a way to close it by the paladin and the cleric channeling positive energy through Thaden into the portal. They did it, and Thaden disappeared into it. A grell came out. The party fought and killed the grell, despite being worn out and fatigued by the unnatural chill. They didn't mess around with the symbols on the floor, and they couldn't find the secret on the Obelisk.

They left depressed that two of their party are no longer with them. They decided to check the tunneled section of the crypt. On their way there, Durnin noticed a small bottle on the floor. He bent down, and when he grabbed for it, it crumbled under the weight of his fingers.

Out pops a blue, hot air genasi. She goes from friendly to wary to inquisitive. She jumps from emotion. Her story is that a man named Lareth, who called himself Lareth the Beautiful, wooed her one night in a bar in a town called Nulb. Next thing she knew, she was trapped in the bottle. (This is important when the group goes to Nulb. There is a lot of anger in Amalys, the air genasi.)

They check out the tunnels and find the alter and the statue. And they leave it alone! They packed up and went to Hommlet

In the Welcom Wench, they met Barrowym, a bard, who was effectively taking a dejected bard's business! And making a bit of cash, too. They talk to the bard, and he join's their cause.

They travel to Highmoon (Verbobonc) to sell the gear they acquired at the moathouse. They bought some CLW wands and a few minor magic items. They quickly returned back to Hommlet, where I'll pick up in the next post.

Re: Hommlet
So the party regrouped in Hommlet. This was a very funny session, which caused a lot of controversy. This session brought some recurring jokes.

Cast:
Broderick: 5ftr human
Amalys: 2ftr/1rgr/1rog air genasi
Kierna: 4psi drow (in disguise as a high elf)
Barrowym: 5brd human
Jezz: 5nec elf w/ python familiar
Leopold: 4pal of Torm aasimar
Durnin: 5clr half-orc worhips elements

The party nestled into the Welcome Wench. They were going to rest and prepare for their long awaited journey to the Temple of Elemental Evil. Finally, they were going to find the High Elven clerice Kierna was searching for...little does the group know that they are helping a drow servant of Lloth spy on the area.

As they sit at a table talking about their coming journey, Maridosen walks over to the table. Here is the conversation:

"Are you the one they call Broderick?" she asked.
"Yes I am."
From the bar-"Hey miss. I could use a drink!"
"Get it yourself! My shift is done," she said. Now leaning toward Broderick, she said, "Is it true you killed that dragon?"
"Yes it is."
"I heard you killed it with a spear! How barbaric!"
Broderick blushes...
"You know Broderick, my shift is over, and I know a quiet place we can go be alone," she offered.
"Sure! Let's go!" Broderick was excited to get some action.

Meanwhile, Leopold is detecting whether she is evil, and he determines she is. When she returns with a bottle of liquor and reaches for Broderick's hand, Leopold shouts, "NO! She's evil!" He draws his greatsword and chops her across the chest! She screams and falls to the ground.

-I still laugh at this. It reminds me of what Launcelot is like in Monte Python's Quest for the Holy Grail!

Everyone in the bar turns to look, their jaws hanging to their knees. Durnin heals Maridosen. She gets up and runs out the door. Broderick (c-blocked) punches Leopold, who starts saying he is sorry. Durnin chases Maridosen down the street. Kierna is not far behind them. Barrowym leaves goes outside and hides behind a barrel. Patrons run out to get Elmo. Leo and Broderick finally calm down. Elmo arrives and arrests Leo for using a detect in a bar, brandishing a weapon in a public place, and assaulting an unarmed maiden. Leo willingly goes to jail. Leo also feels Torm's favor slipping away. His trial was pending Maridosen's pressing charges.

So Durnin and Kierna chase Maridosen to the Mill. She goes inside, where the rest of the gang is waiting in ambush. Durnin opens the door and the battle begins. Kierna was still outside. No one knew she was there. She summoned an ecto-bat and flew it in to attack the teifling wizard. The battle was fierce, with Durnin slaughtering nearly the whole group. Dunrat finally held him, and they killed Durnin. Kierna ran away to get the party to come help.

Dunrat animated his corpse and began preparations to leave Hommlet. On their way to the Mill, they noticed a body floating in the river under the bridge. The party arrived, and they really went to work. Lyssa (Amalys) and Broderick were invisible on either side of the door. Jezz was a in front of the door, but far back. They opened the door and the group inside charges out to kill the mage and the bard and the high elf. As they come out, readied actions and AoOs from Broderick and Lyssa cut down most of the enemies. The party makes quick work of the baddies.

They find the secret hatch leading below, where they find the evidence to convict this group and link Maridosen's involvement. This clears Leo from his charges, but not from his god's disfavor. He performed a chaotic act.

They go back to the Welcom Wench and meet a huge, muscular monk. His name is Kyo, and he joins the group as Durnin's replacement.

Off to the Temple
I don't mean huge as in his reach is any more or he takes up more squares. Kyo is tall and muscular, 18 str. He's a big, bald Popeye looking monk. He weilds a great club. It's more like a wooden support beam, and he calls it his "soul."

The new cast:
Kierna: psi4 drow
Lyssa: 2ftr, 1rgr, 1 rog ecl1 air genasi
Kyo: 5mnk human
Barry: 5brd human
Jezz: 5nec elf
Leo: 4pal of Torm (denied of his powers) aasimar

So, with Leopold out of favor with his god, Kyo the big monk and teh party set out for the Temple. The wat there is mostly uneventful, until they are skirting around Nulb from the south. They are crossing a stream running into the forest when they hear loud splashing coming towards them. A scag is charging Kyo! The party is aware, so everyone rolls initiative. Kyo is first to go, and he charges the scag. He jumps in the air and kicks at the scag, but misses. The scag returns the favor by landing a nasty claw, but Kyo's Karmic strike with his knee lands on the beast. The group is awestruck by Kyo flying into battle. They join in the fray. Leo slashes with his sword, Broderick prods with his spear, Amalys gets flanks the troll and stabs at it. Kyo does a flury of blows. Jezz hits it with fire orbs. Kierna summons an ecto-bat, which flies into battle, and she grabs her crossbow. The scag then hit with both claws, rending Kyo and bites him for massive amounts of damage. He nearly kils Kyo, but Kyo karmic strikes the scag again and the group is able to beat the regenerating scag into submission. They drag it to shore and burn its body.

On the way to the temple, the group catches a hobgoblin patrol unawares. They make short work of them, but they don't leave any for questioning.

They come to the edge of the forest. Dark clouds start to form, and thunder and ligntning rumble in the distance. In the clearing, they can see the arched roof of the temple and its long decrepit wall. Kyo and Barry recon the area. They use a tree on the western wall to climb up. They hear barking dogs, but now that the rain is falling and there are trees in the courtyard blocking their vision, they cannot see the dogs making all the noise. Kyo decides to take a closer look by climbing from tree to tree. He is an excellent climber and makes it near the temple. He sees no activity, but his vision is not so good in the rain. So he goes back to Barry, sending him back to the party to wait at the edge of the forest. Kyo skirts around to the south wall and finds an entrance.

Kyo tells the group what he has seen. They decide on a direct assault. They creep through the tall grass to the entrance. The group can see just behind the edge of the wall on either side of the entrance, a poorly hidden hobgob with a spear.

Leo charges. When Leo reaches the hobgob on the right, he realizes his mistake. There are two more hobgobs and three dogs behind both of the hidden hobgoblins. Leo easily kills the first hobgob, but the rest swarm in on him. Then the group charges in. After a swift battle, all but 2 of the hobgobs are dead and the dogs are dead too. The last 2 hobgobs sprint for the temple. Kyo activates his boots of speed and catches up with them. Amalys flies to the temple and manages to get a sneak attack on one of the hobgobs, dropping it to the floor. Then Kyo clubs the other with his soul (the great club).

I'll put the temple encounter on another post. I realize you all probably need a stopping point!

Kyo: 5mnk human
Barry: 5brd human
Jezz: 5nec elf
Leo: 4pal of Torm (denied of his powers) aasimar
Broderick: 5 ftr

Kyo opens the door. It is pitch black inside. The humans can't see at all. The others see a row of pillars looming as far as they can see. They move into the temple.

Barry lights his lantern and uses his slippers to spider climb to the wall and onto the rafters. As the group advances into the temple proper, Kierna sees hobgoblins to either side of the main corridor. The hobgoblins were in formation: 3 swordsmen in front and 3 spearmen behind them and taking cover behind pillars. Kierna noticed a group of goblins running straight at them down the main corridor with two hobgobs behind them.

The hobgoblins who had targets in range threw spears at the group to initiate a long, tough battle. Kyo advanced left with Lyssa. Broderick and Leo advanced right. The party clashed with the hobgob swordsmen and the other hobgobs threw their spears. Jezz tossed a lightning bolt down the main corridor, wasting four goblins and both hobgobs. The other goblins retreated to where they came from. Barry was shedding light on the situation from above.

Hobgoblins on both sides were slowly dropping to the party's assault, when Kierna spotted another group: two goblins followed by a huge ape looking hulk, 6 hobgobs, one of which had a two-bladed sword.

Leo and Brod finished off their spearmen and prepared to engage this new force. Kyo and Lyssa were still working on a couple. Kierna summoned an ecto-bat. Jezz casted fire orbs to harass the new group. The new enemies broke to their left to take cover in the pillars while engaging Leo and Brod. The ape attacked Broderick, rending him for massive massive damage. He nearly dropped. He retaliated with good damage to the beast. Leo attacked the ape as well and dropped it despite his restricted powers. Lyssa and Kyo joined the battle against the hobgobs and Rarkus. The ape got to its feet unexpectedly the next round and attacked Broderick. It hit with one claw, but could not do enough damage to the fighter. Broderick killed the ape on his next attack, driving his spear into its heart. Leo charged Rarkus, and dealt damage. Krebbich commanded Lyssa to sleep, causing him to become visible. The rest of the fight was quick. Even the bull strengthed Rarkus was no match for the onslaught.

I'll pick up with the rest of the temple area soon.

Re: Off to the Temple
The group packed up the artwork in Rarkus's chamber, minus the statue. They poked around the throne for awhile. They realized it was some mechanism that went below, however it was broken.

They decided to check out the rest of the complex. They made their way to the shack. They walked in. When Kyo neared the trap door, the hobgobs below did exactly what it says in the module. Burning hands. Bulls strength. The party hopped in and cleaned up this little crew.

Then they went to the tower. Quick, but interesting work. This was my first time using alchemist fire, and I liked it. The goblins tossed the flasks down on them. Leo got hit and had to put out the flames. Jezz got hit and dropped to the soggy ground to put out the flames. Kyo climbed the wall and entered from the top. Kierna sent her ecto-bat through the roof to attack the goblins. Broderick, Lyssa, and Leo ran inside and whooped up on the hobgobs, who had turned over tables. The hobgobs survived a couple of rounds, but it was over quick. A goblin critted Jezz with an alchemist fire. He was in pain. Kyo, Kierna's crossbow, Barry's longbow and the ecto bat finished off the goblins upstairs.

They searched the place. They killed the rats. They didn't find the secret entrance.

The group was disappointed with nothing important around the temple. They just knew something was here. Kierna had told them her mission was to find her lost clerics, but that didn't surface. All but Kierna seemed to forget about that mission when they decided to head over to Nulb, then go to Highmoon to sell their loot. Then they made Kierna their party leader, their reason being that she was the one on the mission. I'm sure the group will end up questioning her further. She promised to pay them. I guess the treasure found so far was lucrative enough to satisfy the party.

They left the temple and headed for Nulb. On their way there, they came to the creek where the last battle with the scag was. I let them roll percentiles for a random encounter. Another scag. This scag came in fast and furious. It rended Kyo. They finally pounded it in and lit it on fire. They traced the trail to their lair. There they found some gold and a mummified human hand. When it glowed from the detect magic, he determined it was a Hand of Glory, something he learned about in his studies of arcana.

Next I will pick up in Nulb, where some interesting events transpired.

By the end of that session, the paladin raised his level. I think he was the only person who has both come to and survived every session. He also did not change his character.
Broderick missed this session as well. I made his character take the loot back to Hommlet.

For flavor, I decided to add some local Dalelands flare to the story, so that the characters could immerse themselves in the world around them. The Storm King, a Storm Giant living in the Thunder Peaks, is known to have threatened Deepingdale. He promises to leave them alone if they pay him monthly. Deepingdale will not even think about paying this giant. Also, drow raids are becoming more frequent, and the PCs will hear rumors about Archenriders killing drow raiding parties, etc.

So Broderick returns to find smoke billowing from the western portion of Hommlet. There is a makeshift triage in the Welcome Wench, where the clerics and Elmo are taking care of patients. Broderick meets with them, and Elmo buys the masterwork items at full price. He wants to equip his forces and arm the citizens after this attack. The town was attacked by a storm giant leading a group of orcs and ogres. Hommlet collapsed a bridge and drove off the raiding force, but not before there were some casualties and injuries. Two buildings were set afire. Burne's Badgers are tracking the fleeing force.

The Storm King was hired, as many other groups are, by the temples in the CRM to cause havoc in nearby towns. They are trying to divert attention to themselves. I am trying to keep the PCs on their toes.

Meanwhile, the rest of the PCs decide to go to Nulb. On their way there, they get surrounded by a group of 10 or so feral dogs. The party attacks and kills about half the dogs in the first round. The rest of them flee.

They get to Nulb. They aproached from the south, and they made their way to past the inn and to the bridge. Then they followed the shore-line. Barrowym, decides to hang back and cast detect magic as he is walking. So Kyo stays back with him, and the group goes over to the docks.

Suddenly, the water to Barry's right erupts and something grabs him by the legs. A scag come out of the water and grapples him. Barry cannot break free, and Kyo cannot join the grapple. They are far outmatched by the scag's strength. Kyo starts attacking hte scag, and the commotion draws the rest of the party to the fight.

Leo is also unable to join the grapple when he arrives. Lyssa flies into battle, and slices up the scag. The scag squeezes barry for 9 damage. Kierna watches, smiling, from the riverbank ,and Jezz casts fire orbs at it. Barry tries to bluff his death by going limp. Then the scag hauls him into the water. Barry is freaked out. He can't get away from the creatures grasp, and he knows he'll drown. Kyo activates his boots of speed and follows the scag into the water. He is able to damage the scag some. Lyssa flies above, and does an amazing dive into the water, flanking the scag. She starts doing some amazing damage. They manage to drop the scag in the water, and he loosens his grip on Barry, who begins to float there in front of the scag. The scag regenerates to 3 hp on its turn and attacks! The water churns as the scag rends Barry for enough damage to drop Barry. Barry now is floating and bleeding from his mouth. Lyssa and Kyo are able to keep the beast down. They drag Barry and the scag out of the water. They heal Barry and make a bonfire out of the scag.

I'll finish up Nulb in my next post.

So the group goes over to the teetering riverboat. Lyssa and Kyo go in for a closer look. They don't see anything, so they go into the hull. Still nothing, until Lyssa is slammed by the ochre jelly. This was exciting because none of my players have ever fought an ochre jelly. Lyssa makes her save. Roll initiative. My baddies go first. Two pirate wraiths come out of hiding and miss Kyo with their swords. Lyssa splits the jelly in two. Then Kyo split a half into another half. The rest of the group hears fighting going on and come to the boat. Leo turns both wraiths before they can do any damage. Soon, though, there are 6 ochre jellies. The group is really freaked out that thye can't kill this thing, but finally Jezz placed a lightning bolt in the hull, killing all of them.

They spend some time getting the chest open. They have made lots of noise, so Lareth is well aware that there are intruders.

The group makes its way to Lareth's herb shop residence. I like the way you all have him smoking on the porch, so I also put him in a rocking chair on the porch, smoking. I made Amalys roll a search check against Lareth's disguise check (he is deformed) to see if she recognized him. She did. She flew and charged him right away. Roll init. The whole group went before Lareth, who was beefed to the max already. Kyo activated his boots of speed and charged. He hit Lareth. Lyssa moved into flanking, taking a rough AoO in the process, but she hit for sneak attack damage. Kierna started summoning. Jezz hit Lareth with fire orbs. Leo charged into battle. Lareth was surrounded. He tried to cast confusion, and stupid me forgot to cast defensively. Lareth failed his concentration check against 25 damage. Ouch! By the end of the round, Lareth was dead. Lyssa proceeded to chop his jewels off, pluck his eyes out, skin him and put his bones in the treasure chest. Yikes! If you missed it, Lareth had Lyssa trapped in a bottle for over a decade.

They decide to check out the inn. Kyo, Lyssa and Leo go in. After looking around awhile, Wat appears and attacks Leo, but he misses! Leo makes a turn check, and beats the ghost. The ghost flees. Leo casts detect evil, and can trace where Wat is, but it flies through the ceiling to the next floor. They all charge up the stairs and the rest of the group comes in the inn. They hear the moans coming from the bedroom. They think it's the ghost, but when they go in it is the allip. They dispatch it quickly and chase Wat back downstairs. Eventually, Leo gets up to it and attacks, dropping the turn effect. The ghost attacks Leo and does some damage, but the group swarms in and destroys the ghost.

This party did not take much damage, but they were afraid to move around the ghost town. So they burned it to the ground. Everyone raised a level, except for Broderick, whose player was absent and Leo, who raised in the previous session. New cast:

Amalys (Lyssa): Ftr2, Rgr1, Rog2 air genasi
Jezz: Nec6 elf
Kierna: Psi5 drow
Leopold: Pal5 aasimar
Broderick: Ftr5
Kyo: Mnk6
Barrowym: Brd5, Ftr1

Lareth
Offgal...you were right in your reply to my log...your group had a much easier time with Lareth. I hope Amalys is still around when it's discovered that Lareth is resurrected as the Champion of Elemental Evil.

Before Wat was turned, did the group get hit with his Horrific Visage? Everyone who sees Wat should have to make the save according to my read of it.

In my opinion, since a DM has a LOT more to keep track of than the players do, not to mention learning a new set of stats and abilities for each NPC/monster, I think it is completely ok for you as DM in such a situation to correct yourself. In this situation, surrounded, it's obvious that Lareth would cast on the defensive. Even if you as DM forgot I don't think Lareth would have since he is in the middle of the situation.

When it happened, I second guessed myself. I almost said he casted on the defensive. I wish I had, it would have made for a better combat. It's okay though. Live and learn.

Yeah, everyone made their saves on the horrific visage. I wish these guys would fail some saves. Well, I guess Sal failed his jump, when he plummeted from the obelisk. :rollin
They haven't been able to hit things lately. I'll get to that in my next few posts.

Hey how do you make those cool quote boxes? I want to make my responses clearer.
