Book of the Dark Eye
There's an excellent summary of all of the written material in the module on ZansForCans' site at zans.clanplaid.net/archive/index.cgi?path=Miscellaneous, and this meets my needs for pretty much everything except for the Book of the Dark Eye - the one explaining how the altars work (the eye, the tentacle, the grabbing of a live victim and leaving a magic item, etc etc).

I guess I'm just wondering if anyone's created any snippets so that the PCs know how the altars work but are also clear that it's a very, very evil ritual. Apart from the fight in the Fire Temple, that knowledge would also be of help in the confrontation with Susain Carun in the Recovered Temple, where the ceremony is already under way (if the PCs knew that the sacrifice's soul would be utterly consumed, it makes their rescue more important and also makes the alternative of a quick death - with possible resurrection - much more attractive).

If no-one's done anything, I might put something together modelled on the Best of the Boards entry about the Black Cyst.

I think our friendly neighborhood bloodsucker has something on his site for that: www.alba-ker.com/urodia/c...tentid=106

Nice! Thanks, Zans - could you perhaps include a link from your site to his? Please?

Actually, that's not a bad idea... I'll try to add a page of links to other juicy RTEE sites. There is a FAQ that has a bunch of links but it is kind of buried there for casual use :)

If someone wants to post those PDF's to Zans' site, you have my full blessing.

Why make people hunt around?

-Thrommel, who notes that his full blessing is probably still a minor curse.

I'm somewhat groggy today from assorted causes (which'll make tonight's game interesting), so I'll ask what is potentially a Read The Fine Module question:

Where are the logical places for the PCs to find the Book of the Dark Eye?

Re: Book of the Dark Eye
There's only one place where it exists in the module as written - C122, the Reliquary of Fire, just outside the main part of the Fire Temple.

Which leads me to think that this is a "new" copy of the Book of the Dark Eye that was given to Tessimon at the same time as the Fire Temple received the altar itself... and that it must be a little different from the original Book, because the altar itself is a little different - there's these eggs that hatch into salamanders, which isn't quite how the other altars in the module work.

Having said that, I get the impression from the module that the most powerful temple in the CRM is gifted with the altar from the doomdreamers. At some stage in the past, the Fire Temple probably wasn't the strongest, so another temple may have had their own version of the altar that hatches skum, or xorn, or something air related. Although this altar may be destroyed, the Book of the Dark Eye that came with it may still exist in some form, so you could place it anywhere in the CRM, really... the Earth Temple probably makes the most sense, since I get the impression that they were the most likely contenders before they lost out in the power struggle. It would also be something that the replacement trogs wouldn't know anything about...

In fact, there's a book on the history of the Temple and worship of the Eye in CRM234 that could actually be another copy of the BotDE.

I'm preparing my groups first assault on the Ruined Temple and remembered that there is also a copy in room 20 there, and mentions it's the same as the one in room 122 of the CRM.

Just being a nitpicker..... :b

Darn - I just knew that statement was going to come back and bite me :) I didn't have the book with me at work, but I did a word search in the summary of written materials, and the actual title "Book of the Dark Eye" didn't appear except in C122, the entrance to which my players are poised...

I've downloaded and uploaded Thrommel's PDFs to ZansForCans' file archive - many thanks, Redeemed Prince! :) BTW I love your choice of fonts for Hedrack and D'Gran's handwriting ...

Zans, I may have accidentally uploaded a letter to Mereclar that I got from somewhere else... I don't think it was from your site, and I feel a bit odd posting it without acknowledging the original author - unless people can tell that that's okay? I've got some other stuff that I've found useful, generally sourced from links posted here on the boards - I don't know if it's okay to put those into the archive either (copyright, acknowledgement of authors and all that).

And while I recall it, a set of boules or bocce balls make excellent hammerspheres...
