Chymon tactics
Chymon, the Young-Adult Red Dragon at the fire door, is currently pursuing a very frightened party back across the bridge and into the mines.

A couple of questions:
The snatch ability is written in the module as such:

"Snatch: If Chymon hits a Tiny or smaller opponent with a claw attack or a small or smaller opponent with its bite attack, it can start to grapple as a free action. While grappling it automatically does claw or bite damage (as appropriate) each rd. If Chymon does not move and takes no other action it deals double bite damage to the snatched creature. A snatched creature gets no saving throw against the breath weapon."

But in the SRD, it's written like this:
"Snatch: A dragon that hits with a claw or bite attack attempts to start a grapple as though it had the improved grab special attack. If the dragon gets a hold with a claw on a creature four or more sizes smaller, it squeezes each round for automatic claw damage. If it gets a hold with its bite on a creature three or more sizes smaller, it automatically deals bite damage each round, or if it does not move and takes no other action in combat, it deals double bite damage to the snatched creature. A snatched creature gets no saving throw against the dragon’s breath weapon. The dragon can drop a creature it has snatched as a free action or use a standard action to fling it aside. A flung creature travels 10 feet, and takes 1d6 points of damage, per age category of the dragon. If the dragon flings it while flying, the creature suffers this amount or falling damage, whichever is greater. "

The module's description suggests that it only works against tiny and small creatures. The SRD version suggests that it acts like Improved Grab, with special effects against tiny and small creatures. Which is it? Is this FAQ-worthy?

Also, I seem to be missing something when it comes to her attack routines. Her first attack (bite) is at +27. OK...that's +12 BAB for being a dragon, +10 for her strength of 31. Where are those other 5 points coming from?

Thanks!

Re: Chymon tactics
As a young adult red dragon, she has 19HD. That puts her BAB at +19, with +10 for strength, and -2 for size (Huge), gives her +27.

Snatch should work against Tiny and smaller creatures with the claw, and Small and smaller creatures with the bite. Chymon cannot snatch anything bigger than that. She does not actually have improved grab, it just says that the ability works similarly to improved grab. If the module does not specify Small for bites, then that is probably errata.

4 sizes: Huge -> Large, Medium, Small, Tiny
3 sizes: Huge -> Large, Medium, Small

Re: Chymon tactics
Hrm. It seems to me that the SRD version of this ability works exactly like Improved Grab, but with better effects against smaller creatures. The reason I say that is because it specifically says, "A dragon that hits with a claw or bite attack attempts to start a grapple as though it had the improved grab special attack. If the dragon gets a hold with a claw on a creature four or more sizes smaller..."

If they wanted it to work the way it's written in the module, they would have said, "A dragon that hits a creature 3 sizes smaller than itself with a bite attack attempts to start a grapple as though it had the improved grab special attack. A dragon that hits a creature 4 sizes smaller than itself with a claw attack attempts to start a grapple as though it had the improved grab special attack. If the dragon gets a hold with a claw on a creature four or more sizes smaller..."

Does the actual Monster Manual word the ability differently?

At any rate, thanks for the BAB clarification. Missed those extra 7 HD.

Re: Chymon tactics
I understand your point now. The MM is just like the SRD, no additional clarification. There is no errata or FAQ on this either.

However, I would not play it as if the dragon actually had improved grab. It would definitely say if it had improved grab, and just adding the snatch feats seems awfully powerful for that. Chymon's grapple check is +37 and could easily win opposed grapple checks even at -20.

Anyway, keep in mind that even reduced, Chymon can snatch (reduce doesn't change your size category). ;)
