RFC: 3 'abandoned' clerics, one empty moathouse, what now?
As of my session 6/19/03, the moathouse status is thus:

Gren and all the gnolls captured and brought back to Homett.

All the skeletons have been dstroyed, almost all the ghouls and ghasts have been killed (the ones in the crypt and the one by the staircase leading to 32 remain)

The artifacts are gone, in the possession of the party. The clerics' box of goodies has been raided.

They have Geynor Ton's journal (his focus on food highly amused them) and very well may check out the mouthouse since nothing of note happened with it during their dealings with the mouthouse.

Here's my question: Dunrat'll see this procession of cleric&gnolls enter town, and he'll know something's gone wrong. How likely is he to deal with the mouthouse himself? Or is he more likely to concentrate his resources on the PCs and getting back the artifacts? And if things go completely pear-shaped, just how wide a swath of descruption is he willing to leave behind to confuse the townfolks as he covers his tracks and heads back to the CRM?

What will Yss do? He's out a stoneshape and I don't see him and Geynor able to defeat the grell to get Festrath out. Or am I wrong there, could the two of them defeat the Grell and somehow get Festrath out and back to the CRM?

I need advice from those who have lived and breathed this module. Your stuff on BoB is my inspiration.

As the journal states things have gone badly for the moathouse crew. A dragon had trapped them and their leader had gone over the edge, both mentally and literally. The three remaining clerics were probably at each others throats in deciding what to do next when a group of strangers come along and kill the dragon then started in on the squabbling evil clerics.

A bad week, indeed.

However, now that the intruders have left with their prisoners, goodies and artifacts they are free to leave and contact their commander in Hommlet: Dunrat.

There's no way either cleric is going to risk his neck going down into the Pit, unless ordered to by Dunrat. However, Dunrat likely has more pressing issues at hand other then the wayward Festrath. Master Dunrat is going to have to trick the infidels, kill them and recover the artifact before he can go back to the CRM. He has to act fast because the moathouse operations have been exposed and Hommlet will be on the alert for trouble. Even more troubling for Dunrat will be when (if) the miller's body is discovered, as this gives away his position in town. Or worse, Gren confesses any of her knowledge.

Dunrat knows a wagon is due from Rastor bearing reinforcements (the grick and whoever is driving the wagon). He may pack up the Hommlet crew and try to arrange an ambush at the Moathouse. With sufficent force, the courtyard can be a good crossfire zone. However, he's not likely to have much force left unless he can affect a "jailbreak" to get the gnolls back.

Overall, I'd guess the recovery of the artifacts to be his main objective because going back to the Outer Fane empty handed - nay, worse having lost artifacts and possibly tipped off the infidels to their stronghold! - would be close to a death sentence.

Its a tough road ahead for the evil clerics in Hommlet. However, if they are lucky they might beat those meddlesome infidels, recover the artifacts, seal up the Pit (and Festrath), and get back the CRM as heroes ... well anti-heroes.

Definitely a tough road for the baddies. It would be very difficult for Dunrat to do much of anything in Hommlet to stop the PCs in town, especially with such a scene as marching in their prisoners.

Here is an idea: I never got the chance to use Jaroo. I figured he wasn't close enough to Dunrat to hang out at the mill. His position is already unstable. You could have Dunrat approach Jaroo in the grove. Together they might be able to murder some official in charge of holding the gnolls and Gren prisoner. Jaroo could change into that person and perhaps help the group escape back to the moathouse to plan the ambush.

I still have to figure out a way to use this deep-cover Jaroo in my game!

Use "Jaroo" to change shape into Elmo and release the prisoners. Very easy.

Cheers,

I'd rather be defenestrating Chaos Mages.

Only if it is worth blowing Jaroo's cover that is. Once this happens the party, Elmo, Rufus & Burne will know that there is a shapechanging or illusion using spy (cultist) around. It doesn't become that hard to figure out who it is... if you play the clues fairly to the PCs/NPCs.

That's true, but in this circumstance, it would be worth it in order to free the prisoners and try to get the goods back. I mean, what good is Hommlet once the moathouse is relic-free? They don't really need to keep an eye on it.

Except that it would become the base of operations of any adventurers looking into the old temple near Nulb and they are planning to go there (hopefully in the near future).

Well, that is true. I didn't think about that. It might be better to think of a different plan. Remember, there will be a group coming from the CRM to pick up the artifacts that could help the ambush.

I have another idea. It sounds like your party is going back into the moathouse, since your baddies are planning an assault there. You could sabatoge them when they try to go into the pit. That is quite a long drop if you cut the platform rope. I would try to find the nastiest place to ambush the party and do it.

Easy dude
PC's go to sleep
Maridosen lets in Bad Ppl in through backdoor.
Vacra uses Invis, Dunrat cast silence
Steal items
Walk away to the CRM
