unholy relic...not so unholy?
Area 122 CRM, p77

"golden orb, set with multiple pieces of amber (worth 1000 gp); this is not magical, but rather an unholy relic."

My paladin is obsessed with all things golden. His jewelery and clothing have already cost him about 10,000 gold. I would really like to use this orb, and set it into the center of a circlet of blasing...so the light projects from there. However being a paladin, and it being an unholy relic....

Nothing states that it doesn anything, does itradiate evil or anythng of that nature? So how is it unholy in any way?

Ive had it submerged in holy water for about 2 weeks now. And every day, i cast bless on it. do you think that this is sufficient. Has anyone else done anything with this orb other than sell it? integrated it into the plot somehow?

"Unholy relic" probably means that it has some special significance to the cult, not that it has any intrinsic powers. Submerging it in holy water, etc would have some effect on any "unholy" powers it might have had, but it's probably more because of its shape or appearance.

I personally think the orb has a vague resemblance to the Orb of Golden Death - maybe in the placement of the pieces of amber correspond to the position of the fire gems in the Orbs, or maybe faint indentations suggest eyes, nose and mouth like a skull. It could be entirely fanciful and require a massive dose of imagination, of course - like the way people can make out animals in the stars - so it could be one of the introductions into the "mysteries" of the cult (I am reminded of the stereoscopic diagram craze that everyone was trying "get their focus right" so they could see the 3D image).

My greater concern is your paladin's obsession with gold. I'd be presenting him with some RP choices between his gold and his calling, because it's this sort of thing that gives Lawful Good a bad name... :rolleyes

It is possible to be lawful, good and still have an appreciation for gold, so long as it's acquired and used in ways that are both lawful and good. Hopefully "obsession" was a bit of an overstatement. Still, I think your paladin would be better served having it melted down and made into something worthy of a paladin...preferably by a lawful good craftsman who can feed his family off of the fees paid him, while the paladin continues smiting evil and making the land safe for truth...and justice...and puppies...and all that warm, fuzzy stuff.

Aright...just so christoph doesnt seem like a sinner lol. :lol

First of all, he doesnt take money of any sort. After a battle, if there is money to be had, he gives it to everyone else. He never actually buys gold items. A ton of times there are simply gold items to be had in rtoee. Only timeshe does spend money on it is to get clothes made out of that cool gold embroidered cloth i found, and when i have too many rings...so i trade them all in for one nicer ring. I also never ask for a cut of anything, my party knows that if theres a nice gold neclace or someting like that id appreciate it, but id never ask directly....its more like :eek The only thing i do take are weapons and armor to donate. My paladin is convinced that this is going to end in a large scale war, and i want the soldiers of Hommlet, Verbobonc, and Rastor to be able to defend themselves. Oh yea, and my buddy cleric and i came up with a great idea... WE invested in a couple bags of holding, and bc there is so much art in this place...were gonna build an art museum in Hommlet ;)

BTW, i may be coming off as defensive...but im just clarifying, If something is still wrong with this...ill consider doing something about it. Thanks! :D
