RttToEE npc`s as PCGen- characterfiles-- permission needed?
hello,

first things first...
i apologize for any mistakes in my posting, because english isn't my first language.:smokin

ok, my question now:

is it legal to produce PCGen- characterfiles from RttToEE. i want to create some of all npc's so that everyone who wants it can use PCGen with RttToEE.
These files owns for PCGen necessary information (shortinfo (range, casting time of spells and so on) like the open game content in PCGen) to calculate the other things only...

thx for every answer

Xzar

Someone already did some, if not all, of the work. Check out ZansForCans's site in the PCGen v2 directory.

If you go to the CodeMonkey website (www.codemonkeypublishing,com) you'll see that they will be issuing a data set for RttToEE along with the other splat books and such like. I think the LST files for this book will be about $5

This will make NPC generation much easier as the Deities, spells, PrC's, items etc will all be available as straight picks rather than trying to hand code them.

Having said that I would be grateful for an official "OK" from Monte about sharing PC-Gen files for the NPCs as I'm not sure if these are PI or not

I've just heard from someone at CMP that when they release the dataset for RttToEE it will include pcg files for ALL of the NPCs!!

Great news, get yourself off to the CMP website!!!

Especially as it's only $1.50!!!

Re: OFFICIAL
Although it's might be OK to make characters and distribute them, it is officially not OK to redistribute any of the 'crunch' from RTEE (classes, deities, domains, magic items, etc.) if you enter the info yourself (or buy it from CMP). As some of you may know I was pretty vocal about this issue occasionally on the PCGen list and on CMP boards when the whole PCGen/CMP deal was trickling out. WotC has apparently decided to clamp pretty hard on this particular aspect of their IP unfortunately, even though it's highly unlikely the material is useful for anyone without a purchased hardcopy of the book(s) in question.

I'm glad CMP is including RTEE in their release it will be a nice base to work from. However, I would be surprised if they used our errata here though (although I've mentioned it being important to consider in a post long ago there). Likely we're going to be able to buy a set that matches the book as published. Whether those files can be edited and redistributed by them or us is a big open question.

If things work out they way you guess (which I agree is the most likely scenario), we can at least generate diffs and distribute those for the errata/3.5 conversion. The PCGen files are all plain-text, so diffs will be easy to generate and apply.

Re: RttToEE npc`s as PCGen- characterfiles-- permission need
Glad to know we finally have an answer from CMP regarding this. When they first announced the deal with WotC I asked if they would be including the NPCs, and the only answer I got was they didn't know the answer.

Then when they announced the pricing I asked the question again, again to be told they didn't know.

As for differences in the files - well, PCGen is supposed to be changing from their proprietary format, .LST files, to XML files, which should make changes much easier to view and merge.
