Second temple destroyed (sort of): A question
Well, in our last session my party destroyed the Air altar, which makes two with the Earth Temple earlier. They still have the remainder of the temple/entrance to clear out, but that's just a matter of time.

With a second temple under their belt, it's probably about time for the Outer Fane to take notice. Any suggestions on what to do first? SHould it be the asassins? An invisible stalker? Thrommel, the succubus, and the dragon/t-rexes?

Ah, I remember those evenings, lingering over brandy at "Eat" . . .

Give them a day or two, time enough for Hedrack to take notice. Then do it like the module suggests: one assassin first, then Ukemil and the dire lions, then one or both invisible stalkers. The only real reason to change is this would be if Hedrack had specific pertinent information about the party. If he knew that one method of attack had a much better chance of being successful over another, he would use it. Obviously, at this point we all know that if Hedrack brought Thrommel, himself, Naquent, and Chymon they could easily wipe out the party, but that's not the point. ;)

I like Andorax's suggestion, though, that you send in the assassin at 1:00am, then the next attack the following night, and the third and final attack on the third night, all at 1:00AM. It might actually be effective, but the most important thing is that it shows a decided effort and form of control on the attacks. Hopefully, it will help clue the party into the much more organized Outer Fane and take appropriate steps to alter their tactics for the much greater threat.

Infiniti2000, whose party keeps mumbling, "They're organized!" in a British accent.

Re: Second temple destroyed (sort of): A question
Actually, methinks that should be amended. Here's how each attack should progress.

Around 2:10 AM or so, the player on watch gets an Int check (actually a Scry check, but for most it's the same thing). If they pass it, they notice a scrying sensor observing them.

Calculate a reasonable travel time from the nearest OF door to their present location (usually 15 minutes should do it, if they aren't *too* deeply baricaded). Then begin the assault.

What's going on in the background?

At Midnight, Hedrack and Varachan (supposedly) are beginning their hour-long prayers to "big T" for their daily spells.

At 1:00 AM, after prayers, Varachan begins using his crystal ball, with Hedrack looking over his shoulder (or, if you prefer, Hedrack does so himself) to cast a Scrying to locate the party. Scrying takes an hour to cast, so it'll be just past 2:00 AM before the spell goes off.

Upon seeing the PCs are in the CRM, Hedrack will back the scrying up with a Locate Creature or Locate Object. With Hedrack's range, the entire CRM is "pingable" from the Outer Fane, albeit he might have to walk 'round it on the inside to cover the full distance. That'll give him a solid direction and distance.

If the PCs are NOT in the CRM proper, he'll resort to a more aggressive strategy to get a line on them. Heading out one of the doors, he will summon a SER and order him to take him up above the OF, near the cauldron lip. From there, he will cast Find the Path. The shortest, easiest path to the PCs, for an airborne individual, would be a straight line, so Find the Path should point straight at them too...one can assume that rousting them out, getting up there, casting, taking a bearing, and getting back down should take about an hour too, so that would work out to just after 2:00 to send 'em out as well.

If Hedrack gets impatient, he might resort to a Greater Scrying to find them more quickly and observe them at greater length (he can keep that going all through the battle with whatever he sends). This advances the timetable a full hour.

Also, he's no fool. If Ukemil gets pasted by a ready, waiting party, he's going to know THEY know what time to expect trouble, so he'll change it.

Remember, the CRM exists just to delay people...Hedrack could care less about the inhabitants, now that he's sure that the Champion isn't among them. He may well send the Assassin or the Stalkers to follow the party, hitting them from behind when they're engaged in a fight with other opponents.

"Whadda ya mean, Orcs get levels too?!?"
