Two questions....CRMs??
Alright.....let me know what you think please....

1) Do any of you out there feel that the CRMs advance the PC's through lvl's to quickly?? I am following the EL values and using the DMG chart exactly as it is with only minor outside XP bonuses, and very few random encounters.

2) Do any of you out there feel that the treasure in the CRMs are pretty weak? I have been following the advice of the boards by not modifying challenges or treasure, but the PCs don't really have too much cool stuff.

What do you all think??

Take my comments with a healthy shake of salt because we haven't gotten to the CRM yet--these are more just generic mechanics comments.

First, let me ask: are you really using EL to calculate XP? You should be using the individual CR's of the monsters. However, I think if you are, you'll be undercutting your PCs, not giving them too much.

Assuming you are using CRs, this is kind of a weird question if you think about it, but maybe I'm reading it too literally ;) If you're not adding much outside XP, then they are advancing exactly as fast as they are supposed to for smacking down the bestiary in the CRM.

Do you mean too fast in game time (like 3 levels in a week)? That's probably going to be very campaign dependent, unfortunately. There seem to be more logs here that have groups that have to or choose to pull out of the CRM for periods of time (for rest, recoop, selling, etc.). If yours is really plowing through without needing to pull out, it might seem a bit unrealistic. It's tough to say what you can do about this because they are going to need to be right up at that level that absorbing all those XP from the CRM give you before they tackle the Fanes and Recovered Temple.

The only advice I can give at this point is to come up with some distraction that encourages roleplaying outside of the CRM (or within the CRM without killing things ;) ). If you start to tweak the XP awards, you might have trouble correcting things if they swing too far the other way, and that's could make life much more deadly for the PCs.

Again, I haven't run the CRM yet, but are they selling stuff regularly? Including the masterwork items? The +300gp (well, 150 selling) a pop really adds up. It has been an occasional complaint I've heard voiced here. If your party really resists the reward for recycling all that well-worked steel and wood, maybe insert some similarly priced gems, jewels, and/or artwork to compensate. If they start wising up and cleaning out, adjust back to the adventure as written.

How much experience do you have running a 3e game?

Levels ramp up alot faster in 3e than previous editions. If your using CR to give out XP then your are doing things correctly.

I have been running 3e for over 2 years now. I understand that you should use CR for encounters, but I have been using EL to try and minimize PC rewards because of how quickly they are advancing!!

Right now the PC's are in the air temple....they beat the front gate, and south to the fire bridge complex(talked through it so they only got XP for D'Gran and Krall.), I changed the orc tribe into a helpless group who wanted freedom, but were trapped by the hydra and bridge complex (PC's freed them, so they got the XP), and cleared the Dwarven temple.

They are at 9th lvl.....which as per the book they shouldn't be until the fire temple. I am afraid that the challenge of the adventures in the CRMs will be compromised by this.

An idea that I had was this: The PCs just got back to the mines from Verbob. (resupply) They had set up a rendezvous with Moolwik to help raid the fire temple by boat. They left before this meeting, but the fire temple raid happened while they were gone. Perhaps I could say that the raid was very successful, and wiped put almost all of the fire temple. I could move most of the resources to the water temple where the climax of the CRMs could take place??!! Maybe this would end the CRMs early, and put the PC's right were they should be to enter the OF?

What do you think?

Re: Two questions....CRMs??
Hi Skippy,

My PCs are a little ahead of the curve as well. They entered through the main gate and have gone counter clockwise through A B C D E and now in F.

One thing I've decided to do is eliminate all "filler" encounters. My PCs met the Destrachan last session, killed one and fled. I'll have the other two flee the mines for now, makes sense as they know the PCs are powerful, the Destrachans have 14 int and saw them use silence. The Destrachans will also just happen to wipe out all the giant ants as well along the way.

I did a similar thing for the Orcs, but had them flee the mines on their own after the PCs cleared the fire temple then took a breather for a few days... they came back and the orcs had cleared out.

I'm thinking I'll continue to do this, even having whole temples evacuate if necessary to force the PCs onto the fanes... they might well be level 11 by then but I think Hedrack and co. should prove enough of a challenge.

"They were immediately and absolutely recognizable as adventurers. They were hardy and dangerous, lawless, stripped of allegiance or morality, living off their wits, stealing and killing, hiring themselves out to whoever and whatever came... They were scum who died violent deaths, hanging on to a certain cachet among the impressionable through their undeniable bravery and their occasionally impressive exploits" China Mieville, Perdido Street Station

The treasure in the game is unsatisfying because there is very little magical stuff, but it is realistic. Most of the mooks have masterwork stuff. I have been using the treasure tables for random encounters. Some of those encounters will turn up an magical item.

I think that the leveling rate is okay so far. It took several weeks for me to get to the PCs from 4th to 5th. Then several more from 5th to 6th. It didn't take long for them to advance from 6th to 7th because of Lareth and Wat. If you think about it though, they are fighting a wide range of tough beasts. They will advance quickly and start cleaning up the less powerful. I think the problem is the size of the CRM. It is meant for the PCs to have a tough time getting in and getting a foothold. Once they establish themselves there, they become a cleanup crew. Hedrack sees this coming eventually, and tries to stop it, but the PCs become like a train heading for the Outer Fane. Then, it gets difficult for the PCs at the Fanes. The problem lies in the PCs getting bored with walking over the temples.

I don't know, I haven't had any problems yet.

I started them off at 5th level. They skipped Nulb and the Hobs, defeated Air Temple, freed the orcs, defeated Air Temple repopulation, defeated Water Door, Defeated destrachans and giant ants.

They have now just reached 8th level. So far so good as far as I am concerned.

My pcs are half way through level 10...and theu just got out of the grand crypts...is this too high of a level??

If their level 10 now.. and overpowerd mind you from my stupidly generous method of stat rolling....do you thind i should just try and get them into the fanes now?

their planning on going through the rest of the ring...through earth and water....but by then, will they be too high?

Hi Celtic I would say yes... Remove creatures that aren't critical to the plot, and have the earth and water temple retreat before the might of the PCs.
