Andorax's pseudonatural critters
I was looking on the BoB, and I read about Andorax's punishment for PCs scrying on Hedrack. I love the pseudonatural stuff, but I don't know what the heck pseudonatural is. I am a relatively new DM. What book is it described in? How do I add pseudonatural stuff to monsters? What is pseudonatural? How do the critters get that way?

Re: Andorax's pseudonatural critters
The Pseudonatural template appears in Tome & Blood and in Manual of the Planes.

The "other" Pseudonatural template, or the PSEUDONATURAL template (as I call it) appears in the Epic Level Handbook. Same name, vastly greater powers. We're not talking about this one here.

Pseudonatural creatures are from a plane beyond the outer planes...a realm of insanity where the rules of reality break down into little itty, bitty screaming howling gibbering pieces that claw at you and chew on your....um...I digress.

Pseudonatural creatures "mimic" the forms of natural creatures, and thus are a template based on other beings. When trying to look like their mimiced creature, they're fairly close (just a few things that are "wrong" with them). The rest of the time, they're a mass of writing tentacles, blobs of flesh, or whatever else you can imagine.

Anyways, a quick look in either book can catch you up on the particulars. It's roughly on par with the Fiendish and Celestial templates, but oh so much more useful in the way you can utterly conceal the nature of the creature they're facing with some creative license on describing their "true" form.

Re: Andorax's pseudonatural critters
Thanks Andorax. I don't know if you have read my campaign log (Forgotten Realms Campaign Log), but one of my players was scrying Mereclar and found a note in his room to look at. The note had Hedrack's name on it, and now the drow psionic wants to scry Hedrack! Then I ready your entry in the BoB, which fits my situation so perfectly. I am tempted to throw one of these things at them. Do you think it would be too much for them to handle a creature like that? It will be four 7th level PCs and a 6th level NPC cleric.

DC on pseudonatural creatures.
I checked Tome and Blood and Manual of the Planes. I saw the template, but nothing on what adding the template does to the creature's DC.

Also, does the creature appear ghastly already or does it change during the fight into something nasty? For instance if it was a pseudonatural dire bat, would it look like a dire bat when it approaches? Would it look like a giant eyeball with wings? Or would it change from a bat into an eyeball during the fight?

Sorry about all the questions, but I want to incorporate it into tonight's game! Thanks!:hat

Re: DC on pseudonatural creatures.
Recheck...it's right at the end of the template. I believe the numbers are the same as those for the Fiendish/Celestial templates.

As for appearance...the "normal" appearance is the default, but I've assumed that a creature being summoned could assume either of the two forms upon arrival.

It takes a standard action for it to change from it's "true" appearance to it's "normal" appearance. Usually, I don't bother with making it look normal at all unless for some reason it's trying to hide out or pass as a normal creature (9/10, it's not doing that, it's just trying to slurp PC's faces off).
