Ideas for the CRM
I just thought I'd come out of lurking mode and thank everyone here for all their wonderful ideas. I hope to incorporate some of them very soon.

I'm 7 (4-6 hour) sessions into the temple with three players and I have to say that things are going very well. I however, have a lot of reading and thinking to do. They have just entered the Crater Ridge Mines Main entrance and over 2 sessions 1 game day managed to eliminate the entire gate force with minimal ease. They bluffed their way in, surprised the guards, silenced the alarm bell and systematically using silence managed to take out the Howler, Capture Mereclar, Kill Wormspike and eliminate both barracks. The rest was just mopping up afterwords. However the battle with Terrangyt proved challenging (28 AC with shield of Faith).

Anyway, they're now holing up in the Ballistae room and making forays into the Earth temple.

Any Ideas what Mereclar knows? It's only been two days since their initial assault how long before someone will check on the gate? To me it seems pretty safe, possibly the earth temple will investigate? But at the moment they've suffered some severe casualties and can't really afford to venture out. (Swordsman, One of the Priests, the Elemental, the Rogue, and several Trogs).

Anyway, I'm also looking for some possible role-play opportunities for my players to kind of lessen the hack, they're very determined to head north. If I could get them to go south their is always the Ettin and Dragon. Anything North that would make for good role-play?

Anyway, just to let you know, Lions and Tigers make Mincemeat of priests! Let that be a warning for the entire Temple!

Re: Ideas for the CRM
Mereclar knows what the rest of his forces knows: He holds the prestigious post of guarding The Main Entrance. There is another, lesser entrance to the south, past a dragon and next to a temple of some sort. There's a warren of troglodytes to the north and some temples further on. The whole crater is a massive complex. Did he mention that he and he alone is responsible for guarding The Main Entrance? The complex is led by some mysterious beings on the island in the middle of the lake. He is privileged enough to communicate with one of them, a female (he thinks) called Naquent.

I think that sums up their knowledge as described on p. 43.

It's possible Mereclar doesn't even know she is female. He might never have met her. After all, would she even lower herself to visit the mines? It'd be a good red herring to actually make Mereclar assume she's a male, and refer to Naquent as "him" and "he".

I have the same situation with the Earth Temple, and I had a mephit show up, advising that the great Snearak offers a truce and will let the group pass through the Earth Temple to the Northern Bridge Complex if that is their goal. They then heard a roar and a growling voice in common, very deep and resonant, though scratchy, "I smell blood." They got scared and think the manticore is actually Snearak! (Note: The MM errata identifies manticores as speaking common.) My group then went south, imagine that!

If, however, they go north they now have the opportunity for RP. You can, however, change tacts once they attempt to pass through the temple area and all have to make saves vs the cause fear effect. If, say, half fail, then the Earth Temple and Snearak attack. The fleeing good guys of course will be attacked by the rear guard manticore and the others will have a very tough time in the temple itself. If most succeed, then Snearak will let them pass through, not wanting to chance it. He might even provide a couple of troglodytes to help on an attack against Oamarthis and for a price (say 500gp or equivalent) let them know about the chimera and the chain.

I would use the sacrifice rules in the BoVD and have Snearak start killing the prisoners (leave Tenaris to the end).

Re: Ideas for the CRM
Thanks for the ideas, keep them coming.

The group managed to take out on their first foray north:

6 Trogs
The Swormaster
Greshta
Miikolak
Medium Sized Earth Elemental
Manticore

Then they fled back into the Ballista room. All the Earth Temple has left is:

Uskathoth
Sneark
2 Earth Mephits
6 Trogs
4 Trog War
(Summoned Xorn when they enter the temple)

I figured that they have recieved significant losses, and would probably protect their temple. I'm not sure if they would venture out. Maybe I could have them sacrifice one of the prisoners and send the Xorn and a few Trogs scouting south.

However, would you think that Snearak would possibly negotiate with them? Although I'm not sure my players would, they really like kicking evils butt.

They know very little about the complex but will probably get some out of Mereclar. Would he know about the Dragon, Ettin and Basilisk?

Anyway, maybe I should post my players logs. One of the players is playing an Archeologist type player and he's keeping a little journal of events which is pretty neeat.

Thanks for the help and keep the ideas coming!

"However, would you think that Snearak would possibly negotiate with them?"

Well, you still have Uskathoth, so he's the one in charge. As for negotiating, keep in mind that they have recently suffered a crushing defeat at the hands and claws of the Fire Temple and are still rebuilding. There's certainly room to negotiate, or at least lead the intruders into the temple proper where there power lies.

"Would [Mereclar] know about the Dragon, Ettin and Basilisk?"

I think he would know about the basilisk and Marlgran the ettin, but maybe not the dragon. After all, the ettin does get paid by the temple guards every now and then. He might conveniently forget about mentioning Rusty though.

"Anyway, maybe I should post my players logs."

Absolutely! Stop holding back!

Re: Ideas for the CRM
If the group has demonstrated their ability as damage farms, Uskatoth may even try and recruit them to work for the Earth Temple against the other temples - he could be subtle about it, offering info if they were to strike at the more powerful temples, hinting that the party would surely perish at their hands without his help, etc...

Re: Ideas for the CRM
Seeing as the Earth Temple was completely wiped out by the fire temple prior to the Hero's arriving.

Do you think that Uskatoth, might try and recruit them to do some damage there? Although he wasn't around when the Earth temple was sacked would he still want a little Vengence for his element?

But what does he know about the other temples? About how to get there? How could he gain my players trust?

Anyway, thanks for all your help. I've added my players logs in another topic for everyones enjoyment.
