Xaod the Slayer
So has anyone used this guy as a NPC or anything ??
Ive looked through a few session logs but noone seems to have used him really.
Anyways mainly i just wanted to know how other people played him, and how they advanced him when he went up levels, as im planning to use him in my own campaign in order to replace a player who has decided he doesnt want to take part in this roleplay anymore (do to other commitments or something! :) )
Anyways any tips or anything would be much appreciated !!! :)
Thanx

It's not that I'm afraid to die. I just don't want to be there when it happens.

Yep, I'm using him but I made some modifications. Instead of him liking to have drink once in a while, I made him a complete alcoholic. The party has accepted the challenge of getting him on his feet again. I've yet to figure out what the grande thing what Heironeious expects of him will be. It'll probably involve him dying for the good cause.

Yeah, I'm using him. I did like that guy did, and made him a complete alcoholic, but I said it was because he had just lost everything he'd ever loved, and was questioning his faith, and path in life. The party's cleric of Heironious thought the man was just an atrocity the way he was, and is currently trying to steer him back to his path. As of right now the paladin is always very apathetical and often gets in the way. Like, in the fight with Utreshimon... he went into a deep despair and made a foiled the Rogue's shot with a crossbow before he ran out into the courtyard screaming "It doesn't matter anymore! Why don't you just kill us and get it over with?". This really PO'd the characters, and all the Chaotic Nuetral Rogue was just about ready to kill him. The Cleric saved him though, and forced Xaod to have a two hour long prayer session with him. Xaod has since regained his full faith in Heironious, and become a fairly decent long term NPC. Instead of Adventuring, he's decided to go home and rejoin his temple as a Knight who is ready to protect at any time.

I also made him an alcoholic under the terms, "There ain't nothing in the scriptures against a man having an ale or three!" This is true! After all, why wouldn't the god of valor allows his peeps to celebrate the joy of victory? Xaod just is mistaken that that is all the time. I have him frequently on the cart nursing a brew. When he became 5th level, he had a little ceremony involving the keg, two mugs, and his warhorse Thunder. The group likes it and it is the atypical paladin. He acts LG enough, and is completely fearless. I figure Xaod is always on the cusp of losing his powers due to barely maintaining his alignment and code, however, he always makes the right decision in the end to justify his paladinhood.

I plan to have him (attempt) to be the one to hold back the unstoppable monster. I'm thinking maybe Chymon, the EEE, or Thrommel. "You guys retreat, I'll hold him off for a few minutes." That'll be the big goal in his life. Who knows, he might even be successful.

I have no paladins in the party, so this works well. If you have a paladin in the party, I wouldn't use Xaod. You might consider using Questin instead.

PS The one thing I hate about Xaod is that Monte gave him a wisdom of a 10. Even at 6th level he cannot cast spells. He will be 8th level before he can even cast 1st level spells. I mean, that just sucks. So, I would suggest swapping Int and Wis.

Re: Xaod the Slayer
Thanx very much for the info guys !

I think i will probs go along the same lines as you lot and make him a complete alcoholic. Mainly because one of the PC's was a branded as a bit of an alcholic before but has "gotten over that" so it will be interesting to see if the player has his character go back to drinking now he has a drinking partner or whether he will take up the challenge of "putting Xaod on the right tracks.

Ive also been thinking about letting him use his paladin abilitys (remove disease and possibly lay on hands) on himself in order to sober himself up. I figured that he had had a few past experiences when he was being trained as a paladin and was found drunk. So he experimented with his abilitys to try to sober himself up when he wanted to and eventually managed to use his abilitys in such a way that he could sober himself up. I just thought that this might give him a little more interesting while not really giving him any major advantages. What do you guys think about this ???

My party currently consists of:
Fern - A male fighter elf (lev 6)
Reem - A female rogue halfling (lev 6)
Anya - A female druid half elf (lev 5)
Arianna - A female human cleric of peylor (lev 5) (but the player is abroad for a couple months so she has gone off on some quests for her church)
Osca - A male dwarf barbarian (lev 4) (this is the guy who is dropping out and he recently died anyway)

So i think that Xaod should fill in nicely as a replacement for the cleric and provide a bit of hitting power aswell. I thought about using Questin, but the party has meet him before and didnt exactly get on well with him (they asked him what he was and then asking him if he was sure that he wasnt something else) plus the partys rogue is a tad territorial when it comes to dealing with other rogues.

As for swapping his int and wis that seems a good idea so i will probably do that, i might also increase his Dex by a couple of pts so that his combat reflexs feat is actually usefull.

Anyways any more comments would still be appreciated :) so feel free to say something.

Thanx again !

Re: Xaod the Slayer
Oh yeah, I had removed combat reflexes without thinking about it. Combat reflexes for Xaod is just as useless as weapon specialization (net). I had changed his feats to mounted combat, mounted archery, and extra turning.

I'd probably not do the sober himself up power. I'd think that Heironeous would just let him heroically suffer through the hangovers. Besides, it's sure a lot of fun for the players to pick on him in the mornings. :)

Re: Xaod the Slayer
One extra little twist that I added is the real reason he is drinking so much are because his visions are so painful (i.e. bloated corpses of children and people he knows buring and floating in the river through Hommlet)... he can't sleep well without drinking himself into a stupor.

His horrific description of his visions are probably the main motivating factor for the PCs since they ended up believing him (as one of the other PCs at the time was also a Paladin of Heironeous).

For some reason.. when I think of Xaod similar to that character from Star Trek Contract. Both characters have the same purpose, same pressure, and the same issues. Both have heart of gold even if they don't want to admit it completely.

Grand deeds for Xaod
As I said before, I'm still looking for a suitable quest for Xaod. After all Heironeous didn't give him that vision for nothing.

One possibility i came up with was linking him up with Thrommel. They might be related or something. Xaods quest will then of course be, freeing Thrommel of his curse, either by killing him or by some other means.

Any other suggestions, anyone?

cheers

PS deafdm, which character from star trek are you referring to? Zefram Cochrane?

Re: Grand deeds for Xaod
I'm tempted to make Xaod one of the survivors of Emridy Meadows - he's been hanging around Hommlet for thirty years, drinking to forget the horrors of the first ToEE.

Hmm...yeah, make him the former squire of Thrommel the Vampire. Xaod hesitated in battle, and the cultists got his master. Now, after thirty years of failure, Xaod's got one last chance for redemption if he can win redemption (and final death) for Thrommel...

Xoad ISN'T that old!

Let see.. let Xoad hunt Hobgoblins at his own times, and he works with Spugnior and even took on the dragon himself, nearly severe it. However, as soon as the wizard run in, Xoad run back, forcing the dragon to decides which one to chase first. It think too long before it can capture either one.

He kinda remember me of Dirk from Dragon's Lair.
