How i spiced up my campaign
Hi folks,
This is my first post here but I've read a lot of them and I gotta say: there's a some solid gold here! I've used a lotta stuff from this forum and it's spiced up my campaign good!
Anyway, I thought I'd come out of lurking mode and share some stuff about my campaign. My party is still quite early in the adventure: they're about to go to Rastor and check out the contact there. Last session they met Lareth the Beautiful. I used the post about roleplaying him, and I had some fun. Thanks to whomever I have to thank for posting that. I think the party enjoyed it less cause Lareth had them fight Wat in exchange for information.
I made an effort of making Hommlet a living breathing town. I gave almost every potential sidequest to the party as possibility to pursue.
Also I had the PC's join a meeting of the village council (there's no council described, but I choose a couple of important figures, like Rufus, Burne and Y'dey. I think there *is* council in the original tToEE, btw). It seemed logical to me that there'd be a council and that they would surely talk about the new Elemental Evil threat, and that they would invite the PC's as they are experts on the new developments. I can advise it for DM's who's party need a little 'push' in the right direction cause the village council can make suggestions to the party.
The meeting was held about the same that the PC's found out that Jaroo is a doppelganger. I was actually hoping that they'd theatrically expose him during the council but they decided that maybe that was not a good idea.
The first part of the meeting was an audience for the commoners of the village during which I introduced some possible side-quests. I had Naresh give a tirade about superiority of humans over elves for instance. Of course nobody took him seriously but that story's not over. I intend to letting that one blow up (maybe a Mississippi Burning kind of scenario). It'll be especially interesting to see how the elf in the party will react .
Another interesting thing about my campaign revolves around one of the PC's. He's an elf spellsword(-wannabe) who's lost his memory about oh...say... 12 years ago and can't remember after hmmm...25 years ago and has no clue how he acquired his magic skills. Also I gave him the (slightly modified) sword of fire. In short: he was involved in some way in the previous rise and/or fall of the temple. Also he has dreams about the period he can't remember. These are all nightmares about fire and pain.
I made up the actual history later during the campaign: he had a love-affair with Tessimon. He was initially good aligned and she was neutral but his love for her made him blind for the fact that she was becoming evil in her lust for power. (ok ok, i know it's cheesy) She gave him the sword of fire and taught him magic. (I gave Tessimon some wizard and elemental Savant levels to back that up)
Later the PC decided that he couldn't live with all the evil around him (human sacrifices on a daily basis etc) anymore. He left Tessimon (after a big fight involving a lot of fire which accounts for some of his nightmares) and later when she was killed by adventurers she cursed him (see dying curses in BoVD) and he lost his memory. Now, he wants to find out what happened, and the sword of fire led him back to the temple.
Tessimon was later resurrected by the doomdreamers and when he gets closer to to her he wil get specific nightmares which will give him clues about the story. When he kills her and destroys the sword of fire the curse will be broken and he will get his memory back. That's the main storyline. I'm making the rest (including the dreams) up as i go along.
I had, and am having, a lot of fun making this stuff up but there are several drawbacks in doing something like this. For one, you don't want this PC to die and the players knows this too. Also you have to make sure that the other players don't start feeling neglected.
Anyway, that's what i wanted to share about my campaign. I hope people can find use for or will be inspired by it. If anyone wants to react/criticize of has something to add, don't hesitate to post. I want to hear your opinions!
cheers

Great! Welcome to the Hivemind!
"...and later when she was killed by adventurers she cursed him (see dying curses in BoVD) and he lost his memory."
Keep in mind that if you use this method, she wouldn't have been able to be resurrected. Dying curse means that you cannot be brought back. Use it sparingly!
Anyway, I have a similar situation, where the wizard (Sylvan) has amnesia. We discussed it in the thread Character Background (amnesia). Cordo gave me some excellent help, maybe you'll find something as well. If you feel like a lot of reading, check out my log (it starts slow, but picks up) and you'll see some dream events for Sylvan in there.

Thanks, you're right. I guess i didn't read that entry in the BoVD carefully enough. I'll have to come up with something else. It'll probably involve some fiendish influence or something. Heck a follower of Tharizdun can do anything!
