Captured by Wraiths!
In my last session, my PCs had a hard time believing Tymerian, and I understand where they are coming from. Why would wraiths capture people? Why would they not drain them? And how could Tymerian escape. I said she awoke, ran, and found a way out in a long journey through dark tunnels, leaving her group behind.

IMC, they did drain her, quite a bit; she went in as 10th level or so, and came out 4th. They didn't drain her fully down to 0 because they are under orders. You don't get stationed in the Blasted Yard unless the Doomdreamers can trust you to follow some basic orders. Presumably this involves regular applications of Rebuke.

Re: Captured by Wraiths!
To be honest, I had not reread that part when the PCs first met Tymorian. So working from my memory and logic, I simply assumed she escaped the way she came - by air (the fly spell and the resist lightning spells still active). They then had a clash with the spider eaters and their riders and she was the only one able to get away after having spend all her magic and then being forced to flee. She simply assumed all her companions to have been sacrificed or killed. My players had no problem what so ever with believing that story.

I forgot they could be commanded. I should have thought about her being drained. How could she have flown over the top, had she not been higher level. That should have been explained a little better. Come to think of it, I wish her party had been listed in the description of her rather than when they are found later. I know one of her companions is a prisoner. The bard I think. It would have been helpful to have had those names available to tell the group.

Background for Tymerian (boosted)
Well, the idea that those prisoners are the rest of her party didn't come from the module; it's a product of the Hive Mind (it's in the BoB). You can ignore the idea if you've already contradicted it, or you can just say that Tymerian wouldn't have mentioned them to the party the first time she met them; have they really earned her trust yet? Besides, as far as Tymerian knows, they're all long dead. No sense dredging up old painful memories.

IMC, there was a chance that we were going to have a player join us for a single session next week, so I prepped up a background for Tymerian for him to play. I'd boosted Tymerian to 8th level for him -- I figured she got out as 4th level, and has slowly been regaining the lost experience ever since. Here's the background I wrote up for him:

Quote:

Her name is Tymerian, and she's a human wizard. Chronologically, she's 31 years old, but physically she's much older; she looks to be at least 60 years old.

She lives in a small tower in the village of Rastor, on the north side of the Lortmil Mountains. She came here five years ago with an adventuring party, consisting of Jurikath (Human Bard), Harold (Human Cleric of Pelor), Vister (Elven Paladin), and Erdso (Human Monk). They had heard that there was a dungeon nearby known as the Temple of All Consumption, hidden in the heart of the dormant volcano Mt. Stalagos. Supposedly, the temple was staffed by insane cultists who had been terrorizing this area for quite some time, and everyone knows that where there's insane cultists terrorizing the countryside, there's treasure to be found!

The five of them went to Stalagos (six miles to the south-west of the village), and Tymerian used a wand of Fly to allow the entire party to fly over the outer crater ridge of Mt. Stalagos, hoping to avoid the outer defenses in the mine complex carved into the crater ridge. Once in the air, they discovered that the mountain consisted of two concentric craters; the area between the outer and inner ridges was filled with water, forming a lake. At the center of the inner crater, they could see a sinister black tower looming above, looking like a giant black spike hammered into the heart of the mountain. There were a number of smaller towers on the outer face of the inside crater, overlooking the lake, and three bridges spanned the lake between the two crater ridges.

They decided to fly straight for the black tower in the center of the inner crater. However, as they passed the crest of the outer crater, passing over the lake, things went off the rails. Bolts of lightning fired at them from the glowing tops of the smaller towers, and then swarms of giant wasp-like creatures with human riders armed with bows surrounded the party, shooting them out of the sky. Tymerian lost consciousness in mid-flight; she has vague memories of lying in an open courtyard with glowing magma cracks in the ground, while horrible undead creatures pulled at her body and feasted on bits of flesh torn from it, and then months of horrible torture. The time she spent in the Temple complex is hazy; she was sold from one group to the next, over and over again, being passed around like some shiny bauble to display in their torture wracks. She's not even sure how it was she managed to escape; she's tried to blot that year from her memory.

Somehow, she made her way back to Rastor, though none of the rest of her party made it back alive with her. She's lived in Rastor ever since, managing to make a meager living selling her magical abilities to the local folks. Rastor is a strange place; it's population is a mix of humans from Furyondy and Veluna to the north, Dwarves, mostly remnants of the clans that once controlled the mines in Mount Stalagos before the cultists came, Orcs from a nearby tribe who get along surprisingly well with the rest of the townsfolk, and a smattering of Gnomes and Halflings from the nearby Kron Hills. Many of the townsfolk are addicted to an herb called Tanbrosh, which is being peddled by a fellow named Tal Chammish, who owns the town's general store. Tymerian suspects he may be an agent of the cult; she steers clear of him, and hasn't tried the herb herself. The de-facto mayor of the town is the Dwarven preist of Moradin, Rerrid Hammersong. Rerrid's the grandson of Rastor Hammersong, who first built the town as a trading post for the dwarves to sell the riches they extracted from the mines at Stalagos. Now that his clan has been driven from those mines, Rerrid's a broken dwarf.

Tymerian suffered a great indignity of level draining at the hands of the undead that captured her at Stalagos; it was this ordeal that left her looking so much older than she really is. Only recently has her command of magic begun to return to its previous level, as she slowly rebuilt her experience level as a wizard for hire in the village. She is terrified of the Temple complex in Stalagos, and she warns off the few adventurers that come through this place and actually manage to get her to talk about it.

Recently, just a few days ago, one such party came to her door, and while she was reluctant at first, something about them impressed her; perhaps it was the presense of Hamish, a cleric of Pelor, who reminded her of her good friend Harold. Whatever it was, she was unable to warn this group off from assaulting the Temple, so she instead told them everything she knew about the complex, and warned them not to try to assault it from the air as she had done five years before. Alas, it's too bad she'll likely never see this brash group again.

Re: Captured by Wraiths!
I know there is one dude that is being tortured. He is a bard from her group, but he can't speak or anything. He's the one, I think, the Fire Temple likes to hear his beautiful screams. The module says all he could do is walk and eat. He was tortured until he went insane. But it is clear he was part of her party. I don't know if there were any other survivors.

Yeah, they talked to her twice. The first talk didn't get very far because it looked like the bard in the group was trying to pick her up, but the second talk came about because she overheard the PCs talking about going into the crater. She approached them and told her story. Basically, she told them about the towers and her escape. She told the group that she gave them the names of her party, but that she thought they were all dead. So when they meet the bard, they will know his name. It sucks that I wasn't prepared, but I don't think it will detract from the game.

Holy cow, m! I may be in EXACTLY the same situation next week with and old player friend of ours. The group is also just about to reach Rastor. I hope you don't mind if I slurp that up :) I had offered him Terjon, but he wanted to play someone a little more odd... This might fit the bill, and he'll probably enjoy the insider knowledge a little more.

Dang, that is just one strange coincidence! (Sorry for the mini-hijack!)

Sure, Zans, be my guest. I originally offered my friend Rerrid to play, but he also wanted something a bit more interesting. I think Tymerian is the perfect character for a guest player -- a wizard is always interesting, but the character has plenty of RP reasons not to become a full-time member of the party or take the center stage in an assault on the mines.

hmm
the captured pelor priest is probably killed by Thrommels (I think), but he is probably the one who got Varachan to rethink his alignment.

The monk is in inner fane. Brutally torture and horribly mulitated, he is so insane that he will attack his own party members.
