suggestions for a Palladin quest?
This was originally posted in the DM's Olny forum, but Varianor made a suggestion that had me bring it over here.
===== =====
quick setup:
Pal4/Ftr1 (dedicated to Kord) was killed by Chatrilion, as you've read here. He had almost hit 6th level and so was very interested in a True Resurection. Crew abandoned their adventure in order to travel to Verbobonc in search of a high-level cleric.

What I've decided:
In order for Kord to approve of the True Rez, the Pally has had to agree to a quest. Conditions of the quest - has to go it alone, with no man-made weapons or armor (and receives no XP or treasure). My initial thoughts are revolving around a distant temple of Kord either having problems itself or in an area that is having problems. This way, my other three players can play lower-level clerics and be part of the action.

The reasoning:
The Pally is considering taking the Leadership feat in the near future. So, accordign to Kord, the Pally has proved his worth in battle by his personal strength of arms...now it is time to prove his mettle as a leader having to rely on others instead of himself.

Varianor suggested:
Maybe you could tie it obliquely into the Temple storyline?

Any ideas as to how I could pull this off? The other 5 PCs won't be accompanying the Pally (downtime for scribing scrolls for a couple of them!), so it needs to be a true "side-trek" but one that might shed some light on the extent of the threat from the ToEE?

A Paladin of Kord accompanied the troops who trashed the 1st temple at Emridy Meadows. After the temple fell, the Paladin took an icon of the Elder Elemental Eye as a trophy. It's currently on display in a temple of Kord in Verbobonc or somewhere nearby. However, divinations have shown that something dark is about to happen related to the icon, so the Paladin is sent to guard it.

Options:
1) the Cult send agents to retrieve the icon. If they get their hands on it, it'll accellerate their plans. maybe the icon is one of the elemental power gems?

2) as above...but one of the agents is one of the three temporary PCs. You've got the PCs trying to guard the icon, while one of them is secretly trying to steal it and assassinate the others.

3) The icon's already been stolen, and the PC has to find the cultists before they get it back to the cult. Maybe you could use one of the cultists form Hommlet, like Vacra...

Ooooooooh!! What a good idea!

Tangential thought - does a slave-ring enter into the ToEE anywhere? "Freeing slaves" is a leading example of the quests of Kord in the DoF web-enhancement...and trashing a ToEE slave-ring would give a tie-in while not affecting the module in any real way.

A small number of slaves are used in the Gladiatorial Arena, just east of the Air Door (south gate).

Other than that, a significant number of slaves are taken on a regular basis for various sacrificial uses, again at the CRM.

Either could be justifications, and an added hook to give the party reason to head for the CRM.

"Whadda ya mean, Orcs get levels too?!?"
