Concerning the Temple of Elemental Evil
Now this may sound quite silly, but I would just like to ask whether there is a 3.0 version of the initial The Temple of Elemental Evil adventure. I have been playing the Return for almost a year now and I just came upon the original adventure. Alas, it is in 2nd edition. Having noticed this HUGE basis that has been created for the conversion of the Return to 3.5, I wondered whether such a project had been undertaken before for the original adventure.
Thanks

Re: Concerning the Temple of Elemental Evil
I'm sure someone out there on the web has it. A search Google brought this up, but I don't actually see the .zip file it points to.

Re: Concerning the Temple of Elemental Evil
I have to admit, when I first picked up the module I was more than a little dissapointed that it wasn't primarily, you know, an adventure into the Temple of Elemental Evil.

"Return" in this case seems to mean "briefly to fight hobgoblins, if your group decides to...(mine didn't)", and then "briefly at the end to a single node with a boss in it" :-)

I'm sure the RttToEE we have is much more consistent with the history of the temple, etc, but I still sometimes wish for something as straight forward as a romp against a monolithic temple structure with dungeons beneath it.

Converting the Temple of Elemental Evil
Infiniti2K: Thanks for the info. I will look further into it myself; should I come upon anything, I will report it here right away.

In any case, while going through the module, I thought that it would be quite fun to post-play it (that is, after concluding the RttToEE) even though it may be too easy for characters of 12th+ level to finish it. Maybe as a dream sequence, or something similar, I haven't yet decided. If you have ANY ideas on this, please share them :D

Anyway, would anyone know a place where I could get some sound advice concerning how to transform a 2e character/creature to its 3e equivalent? I am having a little difficulty with some 1-1 characters :rolleyes , or with the Type I, or whatever demons :p

Re: Converting the Temple of Elemental Evil
Actually, ToEE is a First Edition adventure. :)

That said, why don't you post specific questions here. For example, I believe that Type I demons are dretches. If you have other questions, I'll be happy to try and answer them.

"I believe that Type I demons are dretches."

actually...

Type I = Vrock
Type II = Herzou
Type III = Glabrezu
Type IV = Nefalshnee
Type V = Marilith
Type VI = Balor

Dretches, Sucubi, Manes, etc. are lesser demons

Concerning 1e to 3e conversion for the Temple of Elem. Evil
To Siobharek and anyone else willing to give an opinion.
Here goes...
Upon arriving at Hommlet, PCs get to meet Elmo. His stats are (copying them word by word): AC 1; Level 4 Ranger (HD 5);... Str 18/43 Dex 16 Con 17 Int 15 Wis 16 Cha 11.

I remember from BGII (2e I think) that AC 1 means that somebody needs to roll a THAC0 up to 1 greater than one's base THAC0, but how does that translate into 3rd edition?
Also, how is it that Elmo has 5 HD instead of 4?
And finally, how would you translate ability scores into 3e? How do you translate a Strength of 18/43 in 3e?
Should it be converted purely by looking at the weight allowance or somehow different? Is 1e Wis 16 the same as 3e Wis 16?

I hope I am not putting much pressure... :eek
Thanks for any effort though

"I remember from BGII (2e I think)"
As Siobharek pointed out, the ToEE is from 1e, not 2e.

"...that AC 1 means that somebody needs to roll a THAC0 up to 1 greater than one's base THAC0, but how does that translate into 3rd edition?"
An AC of a 1 is equivalent (roughly) to an AC of 19 in 3e. THAC0 is for 2e, not 1e, so it's not exactly the same thing. It's immaterial here, though.

"Also, how is it that Elmo has 5 HD instead of 4?"
That's because 1e rangers have 2 hit dice at 1st level, like monks.

"And finally, how would you translate ability scores into 3e?"
I would probably do it verbatim, treating all 18/xx like 18's, though I would consider making them 19's or 20's if the level and/or race adjustments were applicable.

"How do you translate a Strength of 18/43 in 3e?"
I think an 18 is fine, though I could see a justification for 19 (18 natural, +1 at 4th level). Monte chose to give Elmo a 19.

"Should it be converted purely by looking at the weight allowance or somehow different? Is 1e Wis 16 the same as 3e Wis 16?"
It's close enough that the differences will be insignificant in the long run.

You should start by taking all the characters in the RttToEE module and de-advancing them. You should take Elmo, a 6th-level ranger and just take off two levels. Also, concentrate less on the numbers and just get the flavor correct. I.e. if a bad guy has chainmail and a shield, give him chainmail and a shield, then determine the stat block for him. You'll have to take a lot of liberties with skills and feats anyway, so it seems rather tedious to try to get everything perfect.

Good Luck.
