Big U`s hover ability
Hi all! First off let me start by saying that this has got to be one of the best boards concering D&D questions and answers. I`ve been lurking around here in the shadows for quite some time and am reading the comments with much interest.

Since I myself have a question now it`s time for me to show my face ;) Since I`m a newbie DM the following question is probably simple to explain, so I hope you bear with me :)

I`ve got a question concering Big U`s Hovering ability. In the description is says it blinds the party (meaning that Big U gets a 50% concealment bonus, right?) but since the characters can`t see a thing how will they know where Big U is? Won`t they be stumbling over/under each other while Big U is attacking them from different sides, without them knowing where he is exactly?

Thanks in advance for your thought/answers!

Re: Big U`s hover ability
Strictly interpreted, yes. However, the flapping of his wings oughta be loud enough for all to hear (Listen DC 5 to pinpoint square, if you like).

Still, the concealment factor is brutal, and I had Utreshimon land to taunt the PCs in order for them to stand a fighting chance.

Thanks for the quick reply!

I`ll probably need to have Utreshimon land a couple of times for them to take him out.

Note that Hover is toned down quite a bit in 3.5. Even if you stick with 3.0, you may want to houserule in the 3.5 version of hover.

In 3.5, only creatures Large or larger create any debris, which means Hover is only useful for full attacking from the air for Utreshimon.

Large creatures create a 60' radius cloud. Within the cloud, clear vision is limited to 10'. At 15-20', 20% miss due to concealment, and at 25'+, 50% miss (and cannot target using sight) due to total concealment. Anyone in the cloud must make a concentration check (10+1/2 hd) to cast a spell.

Re: Big U`s hover ability
Dutch,

Welcome and I hope you find everything you need to help you run a great game.

I don't often disagree with Siobharek but at this time I must. The rules for "pinpointing" an invisible (100% concealment in case of Hover) creature you need to beat the Listen Check by 20.

I agree that Hovering would create significant noise and I'd set the base DC at 0 (same as a invisible creature in combat, or speaking) and then modify it by +1 for every 10 feet the listener is from the Hovering Utreshimon. If the roll beats the final DC then they know the dragon is "over there" but has not pinpointed the exact square. If their Listen check beats the final DC by 20 or more then they know the dragon is Hovering "right there", or the exact square it is Hovering.

For example, The DC for the Listen check for a PC standing at the edge of Utreshimon's 90 foot Hover debris cloud would be 9, but to pinpoint the exact square that Utreshimon is Hovering would require a Listen Check roll of 29 or greater! Even just standing 5 feet from the hovering dragon would require a Listen Check roll of 20 or greater to pinpoint the exact square it was in.

It's a tough fight against a tough opponent.

Re: Big U`s hover ability
By the letter - and spirit - of teh rules, Trithereon is absolutely right. And it's also true that Big U is named so for a reason.

However (y'all guessed there was one coming, dincha?) you don't have to play Big U like the Einstein of Blue Dragons in order to make the encounter with him a TPK. To avoid that, I proposed the injection of a little extrapolation on the fact that he's flapping some mighty big wings in order to hover.

But in the confusion, it just might be that difficult...

Basically, that little feature (thankfully gone with 3.5) is probably the cause for a lot of DM/player arguments.

Hi all, thanks again for the reply`s.

I think I`ll run Utreshimon the way Siobharek suggested.

The players are all newbies (like me :p ) and will most defentely be killed if I play strictly 'by the rules'.
