Summoning Elementals inside the CRM
A character in my game just got his hands on a wand of Summon Monster III, and he's expressed an interest in using it to summon elementals (specifically, Air Elementals, as the character himself is an Air Genasi). So if I roll the Evil result for a summoned elemental, what kind of effect should that have? The elemental is still summoned, so it has to obey his orders, right? It wouldn't just attack him?

Re: Summoning Elementals inside the CRM
Some one just asked this a week or so ago, so there are more answers lying around somewhere. I always got the feeling that a summoned creature has no will, and that in some way isn't really the creature itself, but just an energy manifestation of it. I can't find anything concrete on this in the PHB (3.0) aside from the spell description and the summoning description in the Magic section. Monte seems to reinforce this idea in the Evil Elementals section where he says "...because the spell does not allow for the summoned creature to act independently)."

However, if the elemental turned up evil, it might be subject or not subject to certain buffing or protection spells in place, which might be fun for the observant party to pick up on :)

It may not be the correct interpretation, but my take is that if a summoned creature "turns up evil", that it turns upon the summoner, unless the summoner is a "Big T or EEE" priest.

It's a corruptive influence. What the heck good is a corruptive influence if it just makes the fire elemental change color a little?

I have to disagree with you Andorax. Montie specifically states it doesn't do that.

The effect is there more for called creatures rather than summoned. Maybe this isn't as much of an issue at the lower levels here, but I think that's what Monte's intent was.

Nevertheless, I agree that adding the chance for summoned creatures to go wacky is a fun idea for an experienced group of players :)

Ok, I'll amend what I said.

I know it ISN'T the correct intepretation, but that's how I ran it IMC.

My PCs figured out fairly quickly that the "one in four" chance seemed to only nail them when Tsindin brought in Small Xorn, and it all fell into place from there. In the meantime, having some of their summon spells go awry added some interesting spice, especially since they didn't bother with summons in combat, but instead used them for utility activities (Thoqquas to burn through stone, Xorns to burrow through and open a door from the other side, etc.)
