I'm getting soft in my old age!
Yesterday was my birthday and I'm afraid I may have let it get to me and, I'm ashamed to say, I let a near TPK go out of the goodness of my heart!

The party had gone to the temple to check out the reports of hobgoblins, they hadn't attempted to move at all stealthily and, as such, when they had cleared out the front guards I told them that a voice from the temple doors shouted "Leave now and you can leave with your lives".

The party decided to move into the temple, I had ruled that the hobgoblin band knew that a frontal assault was incoming so prepared a U shaped ambush with Rarkus, the dire ape and the two hobgobs as the base, the 10 ordinary warriors as one leg with the 7 elites as the other. Sure enough the party move into the U using torches to obliterate their own darkvision. (Bad case of the stupids I'm afraid, they followed in a character who was role playing his "I know no fear" fighter to perfection!!)

I round of surprise and 1 combat round later we have 2 dead, 2 unconscious, 1 surrender and 2 run aways.

My birthday present to the party? I stripped the surrendered and unconscious ones of anything worth 200GP or more and slung their sorry butts into the courtyard. The hobgobs now have a spellbook, plenty of magic weapons and armour and potions / scrolls to burn.

I'm looking forward to the return match!!

Soft! I guess you could have killed them. That is so funny. I think that's probably what they would have done. Kille a few and toss the rest out on their butts! That has to be one of the funniest things I have read here.

IIRC, the torchlight has no effect on their own darkvision. They would be able to see 20' in good light, then the other 40' in black and white darkvision.

You might be thinking the old 2E Infravision (which torchlight certainly ruined).

Have the Hobgoblins chop off the hands of the captured like I did, then they won't think you are letting them off easy. ;)

"They were immediately and absolutely recognizable as adventurers. They were hardy and dangerous, lawless, stripped of allegiance or morality, living off their wits, stealing and killing, hiring themselves out to whoever and whatever came... They were scum who died violent deaths, hanging on to a certain cachet among the impressionable through their undeniable bravery and their occasionally impressive exploits" China Mieville, Perdido Street Station

Re the darkvision bit I'm afraid we houseruled that one. Having a Physics graduate as DM meant that I killed the change stone dead. If you are surrounded by light it is impossible to see into surrounding darkness.

If it weren't, why would anybody ever evolve darkvision?

Not sure I get this... what does being in light ruining darkvision have to do with darkvision evolving for a creature that spends most of its life in the absence of any light?

As one physicist to another (whose players are all but one as well) ... what is darkvision for you then, a supped up version of low-light? If so, realize that that's not the way it's intended in 3e, even if it evolved somehow from the old infravision of previous versions. Darkvision does not work by means of optical wavelength photons, as it works with no light source at all. There's really nothing that says it works by photons at all, though. Maybe it's using that elusive massless particle that all the arcane spellcasters are able to manipulate ;)

getting soft... yer right
Why do I get this horrified feeling some-ones going to mention superstring or quarks in a minute...

Elves have Low Light Vision, and Dwarves / Half-Orcs have DarkVision..

As all three have "normal" eyesight they can see in the same part of the visible spectrum as all other races.

As it is not noted that they have antennea or strange sensory organs we can assume they see with they're eyes... The same eyes that see normal light..

I believe JeffQ UK 's comment was about the lightsource "overloading" the eyes so the extra wavelengths (Infra-red, or ultraviolet) are swamped by the "normal" light.

However ZansForCans has a point when he says that why should light of one set of wavelengths completely overshadow light of another.

My limited knowledge (I am NOT a physicist) tells me that the best night vision comes from UV goggles.. and this is not distrpted (Too much) by heat, because they produce IR....

Boy this is confusing... And I have to agree with Zenon.. You cannot apply "our physics" to a realm with magic.. Or for that matter "our evolution" (In a world where Gods exist what is evolution anyway)...

House rule it all you want... but I bet your players cry foul

Thank you Ripa that's exactly what I was driving at.

I simply cannot see how someone bathed in light can "see" outside of the illuminated circle.

I would allow tremorsense to work, that's a different sensory organ but my analogy would be a dog trying to hear a dog whistle 50yds away while stood next to a steam hammer.

Oh, and I have no issues with magic, if anyone has read Jack L Chalkers "Dancing Gods" trilogy they'll know it's just maths!

Re: I'm getting soft in my old age!
Here is my take on the question at hand, and it is without physics. Darkvision has its advantages for a number of reasons. First, you do not need a light source. This does not mean you cannot see if there is a light source. Deer have darkvision - they see in black and white. They are at a disadvantage in daylight because they cannot see different colors, but they certainly are not blind. They have to rely on patterns and movement. However, anything with eyes would be blinded by a flash of light or a new light source temporarily if they are surrounded by darkness. They wouldn't be blind for long, but temporarily until their eyes adjust.

In the end though, this thread should not have gone this far. It is his house rule. He is a DM, which gives him the right to interpret the rules.
