Inner Fane Questions
Ok, my party is about halfway up the Inner fane (just about to the Augury of Change) and i've been reading ahead. I have a few questions.

1) What happens if you drink the DreamStep, float up to the top level, fail your Will save and pass out inside the dreaming stone? Do you still make the will save to avoid succumbing to the reverie of Tharizdun?

2)the Tabernacle of Utter Darkness has that obex. If you fail your save you are sucked into the obex. 10 rounds later if your soul is not returned it is consumed and utterly lost. How do you go about getting the soul out of the Obex? Does the captured soul make will saves to escape? Is there a spell that must be cast or something?

3)The room is dark, and no light functiones except the Torch of Revealing. I'm assuming, then, that The First can't see either (i plan on having him flee to the Tabernacle and that will be the final fight of the Inner Fane).

I think that was about it. Any help you guys have would be greatly apreciated!

Re: Inner Fane Questions
My you don't ask easy ones, do you?

1) There's two will saves involved with the Dreaming Stone.

Save #1 is the "inside the stone" save...once per hour, DC 10 + # of prior checks.

Failed save = permanent sleep-like trance = total entombment.

Save #2 is the "non-evil people too close to the Tabernacle" save. It is also once per hour, DC 20, and results in d6 rounds of unconsciousness and d6 wisdom damage, and affects anyone in or out of the Dreaming Stone.

Save #2 will normally not result in keeping you unconscious long enough to have to make an extra Save #1, unless your Wisdom is reduced to 0. If that happens, though, you're probably hosed. Technically, you still have to make Save #1 each hour, getting harder and harder as the hours go by, and with your -5 ability modifier to Will saves from a 0 Wisdom. If, SOMEHOW, you manage to make each hourly save until someone manages to drag you out, you're saved. Otherwise, it's lights out for you forever.

2) Only one means comes to mind for how to release a captive soul from the Obex....a Wish. As it happens, if the PCs had made a deal with Zuggtmoy back at the Old Temple, they *might* be able to earn those three wishes before the 10 rounds are up. Failing that, the Obex is basically a save-or-die.

Arguably, the PCs "stand transfixed staring at the Obex for d4 rounds", at which time they make their second save. Theoretically, if you break their line of sight with the Obex, you can prevent them having to make the second save.

3) As it turns out, The First has a Torch of Revealing. Other than that, no...he gets no special ability to see in the darkness.

Here's how the Tabernacle would look:

1) PCs attempt to enter. Must have a master key or be within 5' of it. Anyone else can't get in. PC who has the key might have to go back out to let stragglers back in again.

2) PCs enter. It's saving throw time. Read the description, then have them make three saves...first for the Obex (give 'em a +2 circumstance if the player declares "I look away" within seconds of describing the room). Then, for those not transfixed by the Obex, for the Phantasmal Compulsion, then AGAIN if they fail the compulsion to not see the First as their missing loved one.

3) Combat begins.

Several things to bear in mind for the combat:

1) Touching one of the pillars releases one of the Unfettered...who attacks someone at random (not necessarialy the one who touched the pillar). The First can, if standing by one of the pillars, probably touch it as a free action each round along with whatever else he is doing.

2) Touching the altars is DEADLY. The First may very well attempt to bull rush someone into one of them if the opportunity presents itself, as may any creature backup The First happens to summon to back him up (which can also touch the pillars to release Unfettered, and can also potentially succumb to attacks BY the Unfettered).

3) All this ruccus might attract the attention of The Third, who may very well come up upon the party from behind (perhaps even sealing their potential escape route off with a Wall of Force).

Re: Inner Fane Questions
I don't like the Tabernacle.

There is very little they could accomplish, knowing what they know at this point. And there are so many insta-death no-resurrection possibilities which could just decimate the party.

IMC, Pelor appeared to the cleric of Pelor (now a Contemplative) through the Talisman of Pure Good. He warned them that this area was beyond them and they should take care of the doomdreamers instead.

YMMV, but I find this whole thing just an un-fun encounter with an unfairly high EL.

I agree. Hell, i had enough trouble just with the Deck of Many things (aka instant campaign derailer).

The constant insanity (from the symbol and attacking the dreamstone) problems and save or pass out and lots of stuff like that makes it a stop-and-go pain in the butt. If you can convince your players to avoid the inner fane i'd suggest doing so.

It took us forever and we lost two charactors and had to stop and heal/restore 4 times in one session. And we haven't even hit the Tabernacle yet.

IMC, they killed The third and went back to rest, so now basicly it's just Tychon (he escaped when they fought the T-Rexes), The First, and Yrthak Innar left. Since the pc's wont be back for a day, i'm going to have them all flee to the Temple and the PC's will encounter them all there.

I'm kinda hoping the players just avoid the Tabbernacle entirely, i'm not looking forward to running it. Still, it's better than what i originaly had planned, where they fight The First up there. THat would have been a nasty, nasty fight.

Mind you...everything I mentioned was pure reading and conjecture. My folks found Hedrack's journal, discovered the "real action" was going on at the Recovered Temple, booked there post-haste, and never made their way back afterwards.

There is other way to escape from Obex. That is miracle.

Re: hmm
While true, I know of none that would be available to ~13th level PCs at this stage in the module. I suppose it is possible, but not tremendously likely. The one shot at a Wish, on the other hand, is far-fetched, but still possible and within the boundaries of what the adventure itself presents (instead of "buying a scroll in Verbobonc" or such).

Re: hmm
The Deck could be a source of gaining that wish or 'Fate retraction'.

Anyway, although I have a long time to plan for this situation, I don't think I will attempt to dissuade my group from entering. Monte came up with some real nasty stuff and I don't want to keep my group from potentially experiencing it. I understand the motivation to keep the adventure 'on track', but attempting to survive through the Inner Fane for 1-3 sessions would be as enjoyable as a 3-round beat-down with Imix (is 3 rounds the average time it takes for a well prepared party to kill Imix?).
