How do the spider eaters fit in the towers?|
Ok, on the map each of the lightning towers is about 30 feet in diameter. On the ground floor of of each of the towers is a room with 10 spider eaters, 10 guards, 10 beds and a pit with paralized things in it. Now I know the description says that the beds are arranged close together to make room for the spider eaters, but that doesn't change the fact that they just don't fit in that small of a space.
From MM pg 171 a spider eater is huge in size and takes up a 10 by 40 foot space when fighting. This implys that you can't even fit one of them into the room, much less 10 of them. I know that the 10x40 figure is only for combat and that they can fit into a smaller space most of the time, but I think this pushes that a bit too far.
There's a cave-like overhang next to the base of each of the towers. It serves as a sort of "stable" area. The pit is outside as well. The 10 guards stay inside, although it's STILL a little cramped for that many people.
Instead of a door on the ground floor of the tower, there's an large open archway that leads out to the open area where the spider eaters live. This would allow the pit to be inside and provide an opening for one spider eater to enter the tower at a time. The only problem I have with this solution is that a pit that could hold 2 hippogriffs at once would have to take up a lot of room.
I'm guessing that the party doesn't try to explore the towers in most campaigns. Trying to set up miniatures for the encounter would show the problem immediately. My party is still in the CRM, but I wanted to be ready for the furture. Comments? Suggestions?
