How do the spider eaters fit in the towers?

Ok, on the map each of the lightning towers is about 30 feet in diameter. On the ground floor of of each of the towers is a room with 10 spider eaters, 10 guards, 10 beds and a pit with paralized things in it. Now I know the description says that the beds are arranged close together to make room for the spider eaters, but that doesn't change the fact that they just don't fit in that small of a space.

From MM pg 171 a spider eater is huge in size and takes up a 10 by 40 foot space when fighting. This implys that you can't even fit one of them into the room, much less 10 of them. I know that the 10x40 figure is only for combat and that they can fit into a smaller space most of the time, but I think this pushes that a bit too far.

My solution:
There's a cave-like overhang next to the base of each of the towers. It serves as a sort of "stable" area. The pit is outside as well. The 10 guards stay inside, although it's STILL a little cramped for that many people.

Alternate solution:
Instead of a door on the ground floor of the tower, there's an large open archway that leads out to the open area where the spider eaters live. This would allow the pit to be inside and provide an opening for one spider eater to enter the tower at a time. The only problem I have with this solution is that a pit that could hold 2 hippogriffs at once would have to take up a lot of room.

I'm guessing that the party doesn't try to explore the towers in most campaigns. Trying to set up miniatures for the encounter would show the problem immediately. My party is still in the CRM, but I wanted to be ready for the furture. Comments? Suggestions?

I think your solution is sound.

As far as hippogriffs remember that a live battle-ready hippogriff is going to take up more space then a dead one. The two hippogriffs are likely take up only half the normal facing when all webbed up by the spider eaters.

I did about the same thing in my campaign. The pit in the tower just led to a cave/stables below the tower. The spider eaters could crawl up from the caves to be mounted by the riders and then fly out the ground floor door.

The towers are cramped, but these guys are crazy-nuts. I don 't expect my players to ever enter a tower, but it'd have been nice to have a floor plan.
