The maps
Has anyone else apart from me drawn out the CRM and Fanes maps out on graph paper for ease of mapping?
I have created a whole set of master maps, and when the party has explorer area X I put it on their map between games. This helps me keep track of where they have been, and so they can have an idea of what passages they haven't exploered (did we look down there last game? Hmm you think we would remeber it was only 5 mins ago...)
This also helps me out in combat as I like to draw out a combat map onto a Whiteboardesq grid with dry erase markers and the maps can be a little hard to convert on the fly ("wait is this a 20ft room or 15ft? er...the room description says 20ft but that means i made the 17~ approx corridor to wide to fit here -doh!"). This give me slightly wierd tunnels, but works quite well on the constructed areas, and for the caverns it doesn't matter.
I would have to say the maps LOOK superb - they are just hard to translate into an effective combat map :P

Re: The maps
I have taken the time to draw out some of the larger combat areas (IE Gate Areas, Temples).
The maps are cool, but like you said they do not transfer to a 5 foot scale easily in the middle of a game.

Absolutely. They clearly emphasized style over functionality when it comes to the shaded wall effect, which is too bad as they are excellent maps otherwise.
I never thought about drawing it out on graph paper. That's not a bad idea. It is hard to copy those maps to 5 foot battlemaps on the fly... It's taking too much time and double checking on my part as DM.

Re: The maps
I put the image up on my 56" wide screen TV (via laptop video connection), using the layered maps. The player's then do the 5ft battle map using little pieces of wood while I prepare the bad guys and the battle. One player each week becomes 'Map Boy' and has to setup the map. We have handy pieces of wood (1/8in balsa, cut into various lengths) that work quite well as walls, and additional pieces for obstacles, etc. I have pictures of it, but no website yet.
I really hate the shadowing on the maps, too. It makes it too difficult to guage the correct size. For the most part, it makes no difference anyway, but it still is extremely annoying.

Re: The maps
I tried out hooking my pc up to my 29" TV, I dunno if it was the TV or my geforce4ti, but it came out at crappy res, as didn't look all that nice, was barely big enough to be worth the effort.
Hey, infinit2000 could you send me a pic or two or your setup? I experimented with carboard walls, with limited success about 3 years back, and I was wondering how you got on with balsa.
