Verbobonc Side Trek After Near TPK
I'm after some help, advice and inspiration. I am hoping that this thread will actually prove useful to more people than just me, as I'm sure I can't be the only person to have experienced this.

Quick Background:

Party are 5 x 8th level and have just experienced near TPK in the CRM fighting D'Gran and his cronies. The surviving party member (singular) managed to recover the heads of his companions. He has fled to Verbobonc and is heading for a temple to get them raised. Sadly he hardly has a penny to his name so he is hard pressed. But the bottom line is that I want the party to be raised so as to provide continuity to the campaign.

So, I am looking to design (hopefully with your help) a Quest that the newly raised party can be sent on to pay for their resurrections.

(As a side issue, IMC Resurrection does not result in loss of level, but in starting at the beginning of the current level, so all will be raised at the beginning of 8th).

My initial thoughts are these:

1. I expect this to be done at the Temple of Xan Yae, but I would like to design an adventure that works with any temple.
2. I see this as a grand opportunity to introduce Vachan (sp?) to the proceedings - the party have never met or heard of him yet and this is his chance to help them out.
3. I was thinking of expanding on the whole Tanbrosh addiction idea here, and perhaps having the party uncover and go up against a cell of cultists who are introducing Tanbrosh to Verbobonc. Maybe they are targetting the temple priests themselves, maybe their target is elsewhere. Perhaps a gladiatorial arena?
4. I would like the general style of this adventure to be investigative as the party have zero equipment to start with and as it would make a change of pace to the hack fest of the CRM.
5. I would like them to have no idea that this was in any way related to the CRM until the end when they uncover the cultists and spoil their dastardly plot.

So, has this been done before? Does anyone have any suggestions for ideas to expand on this? Is this a good idea? Am I nuts? :D

Any help would be massively appreciated!

Cheers

I'd rather be defenestrating Chaos Mages.

Dungeon
There was an adventure in a Dungeon mag (around issue 95 somewhere, the issue with the gladiator on the cover) about two competing organisations of gladiators in a city with an arena. It was about drugs too and the organisations regularly raised their fighters after a lost fight.
If the hero went into town saying he had these mighty 8th-level-heroes'-bodys with him, he could be forced to work as gladiators with his raised friends to pay for the raising, which is a hook to that adventure. It would fit nicely, if you alter the NPCs and the drugs mentioned.

Re: Dungeon
Yeah, I have that Dungeon Magazine too and had thought about possibly using it! I was going to dig it out tonight (am at work at the mo). That was exactly what I thought I might use as a backdrop to the adventure as I seemed to remember it involving drugs.

The character in question is bound to go to the temple to get them raised, but I see no reason why the temple couldn't send the character(s) into the arena as a plant to find out what is happening - and effectively get the arena to raise them at the start. Would be an interesting twist!

I shall read it up and have a think about it and post some thoughts on what I find...

Thanks for the idea

Re: Dungeon
I worked up a city-based side adventure using the Goblins of IO-Rach idea in the BoVD. Check out ZansForCans's site for a Word document description of it. If you need the map, I can scan it in and send you a .JPG. There are a lot of opportunities with it, but I intended it as a one-nighter.

Thanks Infinity but I can't use the BoVD. We have this thing in our group where different people own different books and DM from them. BoVD isn't mine so I don't read it or use it. Thanks for the suggestion anyway.

BTW, this idea (book distribution) works a dream for those groups who play with many different DMs and many different campaigns.

My group of 6 people includes 4 who DM regularly. We each have our own books from which to draw monsters and ideas for our own campaigns and when someone buys a given book the other DMs don't touch them. It's really improved our games as now when playing I get to meet monsters out of loads of source books that I have no idea what they do. As a player who's been playing D&D through all incarnations since Basic, having no idea what monsters are, nor what they do is superb!!! :-)

Verbobonc Town
On this subject though, does anyone have a complete Verbobonc Web Page? I'm looking for someone who's already created a complete Verbobonc and stuck it on the web, that I can shamelessly use for my campaign.

Doesn't have to be a member here, although if the page has links to the RttToEE module that would be superb.

Thanks

Superb!
That's ace!

Have you considered making it HTML? You remember the TAB that came out a while back? I took it and scanned it in and scanned the map too and then made the whole thing a series of HTML documents and made the map clickable such that when you clicked on any given location in the city it popped up a description of that location.

I still have it, but obviously posting it on the internet would be a severe breach of copyright so it stays on my home PC for use at the games table. :-)

Seeing as this is your own work, you could easily convert it to such a format which I think would be supremely handy.

Just a thought

Also...
Also, do you have a copy of the city map in JPEG format (or GIf or any standard) at a scale where you can see the numbers of the buildings?

I'd like to stick a map of the city on my Hommlet web page, for my players and me to reference...

Verbobonc City
Hi Mr. PJBlake

Thanks for the kind words.
No, currently the only JPEGs I have are already on the sight (as posted above). I realize the resolution is poor, but that was the only way to keep the size down.

I have the raw CC files on the sight (and anyone can download Profantasy's free CC viewer).

As for any copyright problems - I don't have any problem with you posting any part of the work I have done. The original 3-D map is widely available all over the net, and most of the content is original as well (expanded details from work already available on the net).

Feel free to make it available to everyone! I specifically made this for people enjoying RttToEE! We all know how many times the PC's need to buy/sell loot from this great adventure, and find a 'safe' place to rest.
