NOW I AM GOING TO RUN RETURN OF TEMPLE OF ELEMENTAL EVIL!
I need advices on how I start the game.. what kind of background story should I give to my group? how should I prepare them? What advices I should give to them? How should I get them started?

Re: NOW I AM GOING TO RUN RETURN OF TEMPLE OF ELEMENTAL EVIL
Who's in the party--what classes, races, alignments, etc? What level are they starting at? Are you running in default Greyhawk or another setting? Do you plan to run the adventure exaclty as published, or make changes?

I usually like to start off a new party at first level... but if you do that, you'll have to run them through some stuff to get them ready. Andorax suggested several adventures that you can download from WotC's website. I used the Sunless Citadel and some custom stuff.

I also prefer that my PCs play good (or neutral) characters unless it's specifically an evil campaign. This campaign is more-or-less set up for good characters, and it's easier to motivate them through the adventure.

evil parties & such
I think that you can just jump into the adventure with PCs at 4th level. It's always good to have an open background - for both you, as DM, and the player. You can then say, when a PC meets an NPC (such as Mereclar), "The two of you know each other from your shady past."

I feel that having gaps in a PC's background makes for a well-rounded PC - because, without everything spelled out for you, you can let your imagination fill in the gaps, and you can pick out things from your past that may have only occurred to you at the present.

I also think that Neutral and Evil parties can be just as good, if not more so, than Good parties in this adventure. Good parties might just end up bashing in all the bad guys they come across. When you're Evil, you don't have to worry about that. You can work with the various factions in the CRM to your benefit.

And, unless your Evil party is also crazy, they aren't going to support the cult of Tharizdun's goals. Evil people can be just as selfish as Good ones.

Re: hmm
I would recommend against them, period.

In point of fact, I would actually recommend starting the campaign off at 1st level, some distance away from Hommlet, and let them build up to 4th along the way.

Check here:

www.firedragon.com/~andorax/

You'll find a "package of adventures" on the main page suitable for taking characters from 1st up to 4th level, it was what I used in my own campaign to get the group up to ready for Return, and it worked out great.

"Whadda ya mean, Orcs get levels too?!?"
