Some advice requested for OF defense
Okay, so the group comes from Verbobonc with spankin' new magic items, etc., enters the Earth door, kills the 8 warriors and earth elemental, finds the secret door to the grinder and inadvertently go to the Water door, kill the minotaurs and the tojanida. The quasit got away to warn Hedrak, who waited near his room with the elementals, Bethe and the flesh golems.

Hedrack wipes out the 12th-lvl fighter with a destruction spell (see my thread I posted yesterday questioning the spell DC) and after a couple of rounds the group decides to bug out.

So I have two questions:

1) I've previously determined that the lighting towers *can* reach the bridges (a PC died actually when the group stood outside the door for a couple of minutes when they didn't have any keys). According to this precedent and the communications within the Fanes, Hedrack should be able to contact the tower guardians to direct lightning attacks at the group as they leave, correct? I know this is super cruel, but hey, it's the Fanes.

Perhaps he could instruct the towers to let them go, just for sport, and rely on Bethe to kill a couple of the group members? Victor was already killed, although they don't know he was an assassin from the OF (he tried to sneak attack during a big attack on the group and was killed).

2) What would Hedrack do to cover the gaps in his Outer Fane defense? As far as he knows (from the quasit's info) they only have Earth keys. I suppose he could call forth a couple of other earth elementals?

Any suggestions?

I don't want to make it TOO tough for the group, I didn't actually mean to kill their big bad fighter but I didn't remember the tactics paragraph in his description.

As an aside, what do you guys do when you forget something pretty significant in a room? When the group tried to enter Hedrack's room, all of them failed the forbiddance spell except for the cleric, who had no idea what to search, what to look at, etc. I was a little pissed and eventually just read off the stuff he found and didn't take into account at all the big warding spells and stuff Hedrack has on his stuff. So no experience was gained of course, but I'm thinking that was too easy. So should I 'transfer' those warding spells to the Earth door and another door they've been through? This would show them that the defenses have been strengthened now that the residents have been attacked, but I know they won't check for traps on doors they've been through already. What do you think?

First of all, check out my thread on Outer Fane tactics. In particular, you should have 1-2 of the sorcerers who knows lightning bolt providing backup for the flesh golems.

"According to this precedent and the communications within the Fanes, Hedrack should be able to contact the tower guardians to direct lightning attacks at the group as they leave, correct?"

I agree that it is possible, but I'd advise against it. As you point out, it would be a certain TPK and would piss off your players too much.

"What would Hedrack do to cover the gaps in his Outer Fane defense?"

Do you use non-core material, in particular the Manual of the Planes? I'd suggest Hedrack use divination spells to find out where the party is mostly likely to enter the Outer Fane next and then use zone of respite to keep them from teleporting in.

He could certainly use a planar ally spell and make Naquent use a lesser planar ally spell to get some additional help. Did the group take the fighter's equipment from the ashes? If not, that should provide suitable payment for the allies.

"As an aside, what do you guys do when you forget something pretty significant in a room?"

Bite the bullet, much like you did. In any case, this is new information. Hedrack would be royally pissed that the party took his extremely valuable stuff. Perhaps Varachan made it into the room and pre-triggered the traps so that the party would get it easier. In any event, it makes it easier for Hedrack to scry the party, track them down and kill them. I'd take the fight to them, and fast.

As an alternative to the lightning bolts from the towers, you might use the SER's as a harrying force. Played right, it might make the players and their PCs jumpy, having to duck each SER and taking each attacking Rider out quickly before the other riders notice.

Signifying nothing.
