My party wants to head straight to the temple
My group skipped over half of the moathouse, and had no interest in going to Nulb or the old temple. They have decided instead to head straight to Rastor and find Tal Chammish, based on the letter of Dunrat's. They have missed a great deal of information by skipping these areas. Should I just let them continue on even though they don't really know what's going?

Re: My party wants to head straight to the temple
that depends. Usually not a lot of info is gleamed from the first part, the party will find some weird cultists who are basically looting the place and thats it. The journal is kinda useful but it sound slike your party is the sort to find out the most pertinent info quicky.

Rastor should have enough info for the party to know where to check out next, so that part is fine.

What level are they and how many of them are there? The other main reason they need to do the moathouse first is to get some XP (the adventure seems to indicate that it is non-essential for the party to go to the temple in the first part of the adventure). They should be at least 5th, with 4 characters, but more is better :) The main door is EL 5 in general, but if given a few rounds to mobilise can quickly become an overwhelming force for a 5th level party. If they go in the other gate they will need to flee a few times before they can take the forces down (combined gate force and a temple!)

If you think they will not be able to handle it, give them a little side trek, possibly including Tal, to handle hopefully leveling them. If they are just a smigeon off perhaps a few 'random' encounters (choose something theat would be fun that they are able to handle and hit them with it on the road, or on their way up to the CRM).

Re: My party wants to head straight to the temple
I think the Old Temple is there at that point only for players like mine, who see: "The Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil" and start immediately asking everything they can to Burne when he mentions the Temple in passing. It's a trick by Monte (and a clever one at that) that since this is the Return, it must be mostly about the ToEE, right?

My players spent a few days there, believing they had missed something and taking 20's on search all over the place before finally getting the hint. Not that I ever tried to discourage them...

"Well, you didn't find anything this time but..."

It was there own punishment for using the outside information in the game. :)

A little quest with Tal Chemmish... maybe something to do with the dwarves and the orcs, and you are all set to lead them up into the CRM. It's where they are supposed to be anyway right now.

Yeah, feel free to let them go now, but be sure to buff them up with side treks or wandering XP... uh, wandering monsters, I mean, on the way. I've found the ELs in the mines to be understated, since almost every large complex has been fought as a group, rather than an encounter at a time, in my game. Perhaps I'm just nastier than most GMs, or my party is sloppier than most players, giving the bad guys too much time to prepare.

Let them go. If they find themselves over their head they can always run.

My players skipped Nulb and the recovered Temple and had no serious problems. If the players left some artifacts behind in the Moathouse I would make those the key the cult has been looking for to find the Champion.

Some of the extra handouts on Zan's site make references to Nulb and Lareth. I used these and it drew the players back to Nulb at a later point.

hmmm
Send the STRONGEST monster as the random encounter and let the party figure out what to do. If they run away, they will probably figure out (hopefully) that they are not ready. If they choose to fight, see what happens first. If they lose, they learn their lesson. If they win, reward them for thier efforts and should be this much closer to survive CRM.
