Master Keys - silly question
Which door, exactly, requires a Master Key to open? I may be blind, but I don't see mention of a Master Key in either of the two doors (the door at the end of the forcefield corridor in the Outer Fane, or the intelligent door to the Black Spike) which it could be, but the text for the keys says one is required to access the Inner Fane.

Am I blind/innattentive? If I am, please cite the page specifically, thanks.

Re: Master Keys - silly question
I thought this was discussed in the FAQ, but I don't see it there. The only place where it mentions the Master Key is the sidebar on page 38. Previous discussions have suggestion the following changes to the adventure to accommodate the master keys:

1. The Inner Fane door requires the person to have a Master Key if that person is not recognized. The door has enough spells that it could see through disguises (detect thoughts alone might be sufficient). If the person refuses to submit to the detect thoughts, it will not open.

2. A Master Key also functions as a greater key tied to all the temples and even a Lesser Key.

Basically, even with #1, the door will likely not open. As the heroes approach, they will attempt to bluff their way through, then resist the detect thoughts, whereby the door will say, Forget it, bub.

Re: Master Keys - silly question
As said above, the only door that specfically requires a master key is the Door to the inner fane. The description of the door does not mention the master key, but the door could ask to see it before bothering to deal with the person.

A requirement like this is mentioned for the development info on Pooldip, the Kou-toa who gaurds the boats for the water door. He will only bothers to deal with individuals who had the ability to enter the water door.

In this vein the Inner Door could ask to see a master key (suggest the form of the master key to be an obex) before it bothers to waste any spells or time on them. (Or more to the point if a party is unable to produce a master key it will tell them where to go, then start 'wasting' spells on them :evil )

Another thing to note is the lesser keys do not actually really do anything, except maybe in the fire temple, thier only use being to make a greater key.

Re: Master Keys - silly question
Here's an even sillier question...in my readings (and player looting) I haven't seen where the master key is located. Considering they are about to enter the Inner Fane they'll need it! Can someone just quickly tell me where it is and who has it? Would Varachan know its location?

(I had assumed the greater keys and master key were the same - apparently not!)

Re: Master Keys - silly question
The master key is a combination of two greater keys, the same way as a greater key is the combination of two lesser keys.

Note that once created, the master key does not disassemble after a period of time, it remains that way permanently. (Although I assume you can break them down into component parts, should you require the individual keys again)

Hope that helps.

Cheers, Simon.

Re: Master Keys - silly question
The module also doesn't specify what the greater key or master key looks like. It's fairly obvious though that a greater key probably just looks like a fatter lesser key since both must be the same. A master key, however, could theoretically be formed from two different greater keys (e.g. earth and water, triangle and square). Does it merely look like the two fused keys? I'd suggest adopting what someone else here mentioned, that it forms an obex symbol. That'd be pretty cool.

Re: Master Keys - silly question
Ive actually changed the workings of the keys to make the different lesser keys more desirable...

Basically, to open any specific door you need a greater key of two identical lesser keys, just like in the module. This type of greater key looks like a "doubled/mirrored" version of the lesser key; in essence, take one lesser key (download images from zansforcans site) and attach a mirror image of it to its flat end.

However, any two different lesser keys can also fuse, albiet only for a minute before separating again. In order to create a master key, one has to use all four different lesser keys, creating two "different" greater keys that when pressed together fuse permanently to the master key (which can then be used to open any door anywhere).

When creating a "different lesser keys" greater key, its joint shape looks like one of the two obex portions (a trapezoid), hinting towards how to create a master key.
