Tessimon's new magic item?
Hi,
My players have defeated everything in the CRM except the Fire Temple. Last session they defeated the Slamander guards on the North side of the Fire Temple and then they withdrew.
I figure this would be a good time for Tess to get a magic item. She doesn't know very many specifics about the heroes. She does know hers is the only temple left, that the group can cast wall of stone, was able to defeat her guards without them raising the alarm (despite the additional Fire Mephit).
What would be a good magic item for her to receive from the altar?

Re: Tessimon's new magic item?
In my opinion, the thing she is lacking most is transportation. Thus, boots of teleportation would be the best item for her. However, a periapt of wisdom +6 is VERY hard to resist. That gives her more spells, a tougher DC, and a better Will save, offsetting most of her insanity. A major cloak of displacement is also very nice, but I'd pick the boots over the cloak personally, particularly if she's aware of the destroyed CRM and/or you want her to escape to the Outer Fane.
Another interesting item would be a scroll of miracle, which she could use towards the end of combat to bring back all her dead forces. How about a ring of divinity that works like a ring of wizardry but for divine spells?
Don't forget about rod options either, particular metamagic rods. A rod of lesser quicken would be very useful. As would a rod of absorption. A rod of empower (not lesser) would allow her to empower those flame strikes. Quite nasty.

Not to sidetrack too much, but assuming your players defeat her, they are going to get whatever you pick out.
Unless you rule that the created item has some unmistakable taint of evil on it.
The lavender and green ioun stone would be good choice. It's powerful, but also has a limited number of 'charges'.
-Thrommel, who's all too familiar with the unmistakable taint of evil. You'd think that Gold Bond powder would kill it, but no...

My wife (Nekkira) posts the other day and sees a post by Thrommel. She comments, "Did you know Prince Thrommel is on the message boards?" I said, "Yeah, don't talk to him OOC."

Yeah, thats why I don't want to do the +6 Wisdom item. I have a Cleric, a Druid and a Monk in my group.
I'll probably do the Ruby Slippers. Tessimon can click her heals and say "Theres no place like the Infernal Machine"

Well, you all should know me well enough by know to realize that I'm never OOC.

Re: Ioun stone
A Rod of Absorption could work, it will allow Tess to cast more spells while at the same time losing it's value to the party with every spell it absorbs.
If they don't use many spells against her and you're worried about it falling into their hands, well, they don't know it was a newly summoned item Fudge it's absorption level down as much as you like

Re: Ioun stone
When the party finds the Book of the Dark Eye and start to piece things together, they might realize that Tessimon could only have gotten the Rod from the altar.
If you decide to have Tessimon use the altar for its most dire purpose and introduce such powerful items, you should not try to do damage control before it falls into the PC's hands. If the PC's defeat her while she has the Rod, they deserve to get the Rod.
I would, however, encourage maybe making it have an evil taint, or a purplish/tentacle design. It shouldn't have any additional game effect except maybe making a good PC feel uncomfortable, but IMO an item gotten from such an evil ceremony would have an evil taint.

Re: Ioun stone
Sorry, just had a really evil idea.
Why not a tome that increases her level, wisdom, strength,
or some such ? I am pulling from 1st edition memory - no
idea if the "Manual of Puissant Skill at Arms" has a 3.5
equivalent - but something she could use to get a nice
boost - which is consumed in the process - would be one
possible way to avoid said item falling into the group's
greedy grasp.
I am not yet familiar enough with 3.5 to know if there are
such things, but while it's on my mind I thought I'd post...

Re: Summoning items
Tessimon could hide up in the ceiling and just summon oodles of monsters to come and do her bidding - I was thinking a wand originally, but they can only store spells up to 4th level, and I don't think any of the 4th level summonees will be very effective against a party of level yours seems to be...
A staff of swarming insects would be very effective against lots of parties (as I saw from how Infiniti's fiendish centipede swarm fared against my party! ), but it doesn't have the right flavour... neither do any of the other staves.
How about a scroll with multiple summon monster spells? You could come up with any combination of levels, they're very limited use, Tessimon could summon fire elementals or creatures, and you've got a fallback if things get too tough for the party in the caster level check she has to pass for spells beyond summon monster V (I haven't done the math to see what she'd need to successfully cast summon monster IX from a scroll, but I'd think it wouldn't be trivial - greater fire elemental, here we come!)

Re: Summoning items
She would have a roughly 50% chance to cast Summon Monster IX. But the thing is the spell most likely wouldn't be ruined if she fails to activate it.
