Varachan and Thrommel connection
I had an idea I thought I would throw out there to see is it will generate anything interesting.

First of all, any new readers who haven't read sfarnon's excellent "Memoirs of the First --- Selected Notes from A Book Titled 'The Corruption of Prince Thrommel'", go to the BAB right now (don't walk, run!) to check it out.

I had a thought on the train today... (But it would involve a rewriting of the above.) What if it was the capturing and turning of Thrommel that propelled Varachan so quickly up the ranks of the cult (particularly when compared with Hedrack who had such a major failure in losing the Temple). And, what if ironically it was his very success in turning Thrommel that started to open Varachan's eyes... he started to grudingly admire Thrommel's courage and fortitude, and when he was finally turned and became a creature of evil, with only a shadow of his former self remaining, Varachan began to wonder for the first time if he had done the right thing... if he was headed down the right path. Then finding out about the plans of the doomdreamers was the final straw that broke the camel's back.

When/if my players find out who Thommel is, I'm sure they will confront Varachan, asking why he didn't tell them who the vampire was. And Varachan could react, "I... I was... No, I am so ashamed of what I did to him."

Re: Varachan and Thrommel connection
It would make for a closer connection of the NPCs in the IF, but you'll want to consider the inter-personal dynamics. If Varachan helped bring about Thrommel's fall, the two of them might have issues, as I could easily see Thrommel not being the most forgiving guy on the planet, even when he was alive.

Yeah, fine with me. ;) Or he could have undergone some variation of Stockholm Syndrome and befriended Varachan during the process... or not even truly realize it was Varachan behind the machinations of how to turn him (and be livid when/if he finds out).... or Varachan played the good cop to someone else's bad cop.

What if Thrommel somehow found out Varachan was helping the party? Assuming his ultimate goal is to escape the OF with his coffin.

Absolutely beautiful thought, Cordo! I love it! This is particular fun after the party redeems or saves Varachan, and then redeems Thrommel, to have him blame Varachan for his vampirism. It provides for a lot of good RP that's for sure. What's a party to do? :D

Yes I was thinking about that, too. They could be in a real pickle if Thrommel demands Varachan be brought to justice. And after losing a decade of his life, undergoing torture, and convinced to do unspeakable things he would have a pretty strong reason to do so.

But Varachan could argue that his mission in continuing to infiltrate the cult (in other locations even after the adventure is over) is more important.

Fair enough - serves me right for trying to reply just before going home. I just meant that it would deepen the relationships between the various NPCs in the... Oh crud. I meant OF. I'm so brain dead I should be on life suport.

hmm
Think of it similar to Pulp Fiction.....

Remember one guy got sodomized and one boxer save his ... *ahem*. Rather than forgive him entirely, he told this boxer to leave and never come back again W/O sending anyone to kill him. That how it can work out.

Brilliant and Timely!
Thanks, Cordo! I'm going to go re-write my Memoirs of the First handout right now, to insert Varachan into the history prominently.

This is _perfect_ timing for my game -- next session, I was planning to have the party finally meet Varachan face to face in his chambers, only to have the meeting rudely interrupted by Thrommel knocking on the door. The party doesn't know Thrommel is alive^Waround, and Varachan knows that Thrommel can't enter without an invitation, so the party has mere rounds to quickly digest this twist and gather up Varachan's loot and plan an escape from the OF before Thrommel figures out what's going on and fetches some living muscle to take down the door. This twist gives some excellent new depth to the Thrommel/Varachan dynamic.

I want a copy of that! :)
Perhaps you could just post it to the BoB when you are done?

Re: Brilliant and Timely!
It's already in the BoB, I'm just editing it a bit. I've already edited it to change the details of Fragrach to match my campaign, and I've added a preface note from the First to Hedrack:
Quote:
My darling Hedrack, Enjoy your new toy, the Prince! I’m sure that these excerpts from my journals will provide you with the information you need to keep him loyal and subservient, not to mention many nights of pleasant bedtime reading. The attached slave answers to the name of Rigolla.
May Tharizdun Consume Us All, The First

Rigolla was a slave girl who was chained to the book when it was given to Hedrack, for page turning and place marking. She's long since died, and when the PCs find the book, it will have a decayed severed hand attached to it.
