Ooops in the Best of the Boards
On the topic of scrying Hedrack, from the BotB:

Quote:
Then [Hedrack] begin casting Planar Ally to summon up something nasty in Tharizdun's name (ideally something Pseudonatural so it's not entirely recognizable what the heck it is). Then cast Locate Creature (Hedrack's range will cover just about the entire CRM from within the Outer Fane), figure out where the PCs are at right now, and send "the thing" after them.

Twp problems with this -- Locate Creature is not on the cleric list. Also, the statement about the range is not entirely correct. Using the scale on the maps, some areas may not be in range unless Hedrack walks around (and even then, those areas nearest the outside wall may be just outside the range).

I noticed this as the players are now trying to use Spellcraft to figure out the sequence of events. My PCs were in the Giants quarters of the fire bridge complex when they scried on Hedrack. This is basically out of his range, even if I change it to Locate Object.

As a fix, I am going to say Hedrack cast Greater Scrying. I reasoned that he has small indicators scattered around the CRM. These indicators (marks on the wall, perhaps) immediately lets him (or Varachan) know what part of the mines he is looking at.

I find it strange that Locate Object and Discern Location are on the Clr list, but not Location Creature.

Yes, we actually discussed this before but no changes were made to the BoB. I think it's probably a bit dodgy to assume that Hedrack can immediately recognize anywhere in the CRM from "secret marks" on the walls--especially if the players haven't had a chance to see and perhaps work out what they are before now. However, since Greater Scrying lasts for 14 hours in Hedrack's case, he should be able to watch his target until he gets a general idea of where they are and where they sleep. That'll do the trick.

If nothing else, Hedrack is probably familiar with the bridge areas, so I will use that as backup. In addition, my party has not spent too much time in the mines -- I had them go on a side mission instead of doing the crawl -- it is reasonable they would not have noticed subtle markings, or designs in the stonework, etc based on the actual time they have spent there.

The thing that perplexed me is that the party has been scried quite a bit (and they know it). It has taken them this long to finally decide "hey, we need to counter this somehow".

Yes, that he would recognize the bridge areas (or the temples themselves) is likely.

My party didn't really key onto the danger of being scried until the assassin, invisible stalkers, Ukemil and his cats started attacking them.

Erm... Is there anything I should do? I don't even know if it's one of my threads, but if it is, just point me in the right direction, and I'll include any relevant comments.

I stand corrected on Locate Creature...but stand by my measurements otherwise.

He will, indeed, have to walk around...from earth to fire to air doors...to cover the whole of the CRM, but that should be sufficient to cover any part of the Mines.

And, personally...I can't think of any reason why LC shouldn't be on the Cleric list, and hence have house ruled accordingly...ymmv.

"Whadda ya mean, Orcs get levels too?!?"

AV does make a good point, we should probably correct this in the BoB, or at least make a note that Locate Creature isn't officially on the Cleric's spell list so you would have to houserule it on there (which arguably isn't fair unless you tell the players this is a houserule before it is used against them).

(Personally, I think Clerics are strong enough without adding more spells to their spell list.)

Re: Ooops in the Best of the Boards
Background: IMC, the sensor is an insubstantual eye -- those noticing the scrying can see a faint outline. Also, I ruled the sensor is focused on the target and cannot readily "change view" to see the surroundings (ie, cannot peek around the corner away from the target, hard to look at other things in the room away from the target, etc).

In last night's session, the group again returned to the mines (the group's cleric had been killed in strike by the assassins -- they had to "restock"). Again, they noticed they were being scried. I did give them a spot DC to notice the scry sensor would occassionally look to other parts of the room they were in. The PCs then started to examine the area the senser was trying to focus in on. They did not completely decipher what was going on, but they suspected it is to identify the area the PCs were in. This spooked them enough to press on and enter the Outer Fane instead of resting up and going in the next day.

This option worked really well. You might put Greater Scry / Markers in the CRM as an alternative to using the Locate Object or Locate Creature.

I would like to see the BotB changed. Given the quality of work on this board, I did not think to double-check the material that closely (as I said before, it is strange that this particular spell is not on the cleric list when two other similiar spells are). I had to scramble a bit to "fix" it. Hate to see someone else get caught in the same situation .
